    Abstract: A railway car truck is provided that includes two sideframes and a bolster. Each sideframe has a pedestal opening at each end to receive a bearing adapter assembly. The bearing adapter assembly includes a cast steel bearing adapter that is formed to fit on top of a bearing assembly. An adapter pad, comprised of a selected hardness elastomer, is fit on top of the bearing adapter. Protrusions extend from the adapter pad and are received in depressions in the bearing adapter to provide longitudinal stability for the adapter pad on the bearing adapter itself.

    Abstract: A compressor housing is provided for a compressor impeller. The compressor housing comprises an outer shell including an outer section, a midsection, and a center section. The midsection of the outer shell forms an upper volute wall portion of the compressor housing, and the center section forms an inlet for the compressor housing. A diffuser is also provided that is comprised of a center section, a base section, and an outer section. The center section of the diffuser has a substantially cylindrical outer edge received within a complementary substantially cylindrical mating surface in the outer shell center section. The diffuser base section has a raised first mating projection for engagement with the first mating surface of the midsection of the outer shell. The diffuser outer section has a raised second mating projection for engagement with a second mating surface of the midsection of the outer shell. A back plate is also provided that is formed of a generally circular structure.

    Abstract: The present invention provides an isolator particularly adapted for use with a rail anchor utilized in an application where railroad rail is installed on concrete ties. The isolator protects the concrete tie from contact with the rail anchor caused by longitudinal movement of the rail due to train acceleration of deceleration or expansion and contraction due to temperature changes. In one embodiment, the isolator is comprised of a structural plastic material and includes a front face section and a rear face section. The front face section and rear face section each comprise a generally rectangular structure, having a top edge, bottom edge, and side edges. A center section joins the front face section and rear face section and forms part of the top of the isolator. In another embodiment, the front face section includes a top section and bottom section, with the top section having a lower edge projecting laterally at an acute angle from the bottom section.

The collected evaporative liquid is then sprayed onto an indirect evaporative heat exchange section to indirectly exchange sensible heat from a fluid stream flowing within a series of enclosed circuits comprising the indirect evaporative heat exchange section.

    Abstract: A method of casting an object, usually a railroad wheel, is provided. A graphite mold having a drag section and a cope section has an opening in the drag section allowing molten metal to be fed upwardly by pressure into the cast object cavity. A stopper pipe assembly extends through centrally located openings in the cope section and the drag section. The hub core seals against an opening in the drag section upon cessation of pouring to keep molten metal in the cavity in the mold. The hub core assembly is comprised of refractory material which the molten metal contacts thereby allowing the reuse of the hub core assembly.

A graphite mold having a drag section and a cope section requires a plurality of riser openings in the cope section to ensure proper dimensional accuracy of the cast railroad wheel by allowing molten metal to continue to feed downwardly through the riser openings to the cast wheel cavity during initial cooling. The riser openings are lined with an improved insulating material in an accurate manner such that the insulating material is added between a machined riser opening in the graphite cope mold section and a mandrel inserted in the riser opening.

    Abstract: A cast metal sideframe for use in a railway car truck has a spring seat for supporting the springs of a spring set. The sideframe is molded using a core that includes a portion for defining the exterior surface of the spring seat. The core can be a single piece or multi-piece core. The spring seat includes a plurality of aerodynamically-shaped spring retainers formed on the top face spring seat. The aerodynamic shape of the spring retainers reduces the tendency for sand to swirl and create voids during formation of the sand core that is used to mold the sideframe. The aerodynamic shape may include forming at least some of the side walls of the spring retainers at an obtuse angle with the top face of the spring seat. The spring retainers may have concave top faces so as to reduce the volume of material comprising the spring retainers.

    Abstract: A friction wedge for a railroad car truck including a body and a wear member. The body includes a front face having a pocket adapted to removably receive the wear member. The pocket includes a bottom wall and a peripheral side wall extending outwardly from the bottom wall. The wear member includes a wear pad having a first wall and a connector member such as an adhesive layer attached to the first wall. The connector member removably attaches the first wall of the wear pad to the body. The peripheral side wall of the pocket extends around a side wall of the wear pad and prevents lateral sliding movement of the pad member with respect to the bottom wall of the pocket. The wear pad includes a second wall that is adapted to slidably engage the side frame of a railroad car truck to provide dampened movement of the bolster of the truck. The wear pad may be easily removed from the pocket when worn and replaced with a new wear pad while the body may be reused.

    Abstract: A draft gear assembly is disclosed alone and in combination with a draft sill and a coupler. The draft sill has front and rear stops defining a draft gear pocket. The draft gear assembly has a yoke, a coupler follower, a rear follower, a front resilient member and a back resilient member. The yoke has top and bottom stops. The coupler follower is biased against the yoke top and bottom stops. The draft gear assembly also includes a center rod that extends through the yoke, through the back resilient member and through the rear follower. Prior to installation on a railcar, there is a shortening member on the center rod. The length of the assembly between the shortening member and the front of the coupler follower is slightly less than the longitudinal length of the draft gear pocket. After installation, the rear follower is positioned against rear stops of the draft sill. After installation, the yoke, coupler and coupler follower each have a neutral position and a full buff position.

    Abstract: A railway car truck having a pair of side frames and a bolster and a transom extending transversely between the side frames. A respective rocker seat is rigidly and permanently attached to each end of the transom and is pivotally supported on a rocker bar that is supported by the tension member of a sideframe. The pivotal connection between the rocker seat and the rocker bar disposes the transom perpendicular to the side frame and provides pivotal movement of the side frame with respect to the transom. The railway car truck is assembled by inserting the ends of the bolster and transom into the window of a side frame, and then inserting the rocker bar through a passageway in the side frame to a position under the rocker seat and on the bottom tension member of the side frame. Springs are then inserted between the transom and the bolster such that the bolster is resiliently supported on the side frame.

The integrally-formed portions may contact both the cope and drag portions of the mold. The end cores may include integrally formed core prints for supporting the core in the mold. The integrally-formed portions of the center core include connections that are formed integrally with the other portions. Molten metal is introduced into the mold to cast the bolster or sideframe.
