Abstract: The surface treatment for printing applications using water-based ink of the present invention comprises a surface pretreatment of the recording media prior to the deposition of the ink on the surface, wherein the pretreatment liquid is an aqueous and/or alcoholic solution or emulsion containing a polyvalent metal salt, and at least one of an organic swelling reagent and a coalescence reagent. The pretreatment liquid is applied with a rubbing motion in a thin layer of approximately 4 &mgr;m to the entire upper surface of the recording media. The swelling reagent and/or the coalescence reagent cause the upper 3-5 &mgr;m to swell and the polyvalent metal cations become embedded in the surface. After partial drying of the pretreated media, ink composition is deposited onto the surface to form an image. The ink solids precipitate in response to the embedded cations deposited in the pretreatment, and form interactions above and below the surface of the media to give a mechanically stable ink dot.

Abstract: A method for protecting a non-volatile memory device, the method including forming a non-volatile memory device including a polycide structure formed over a non-conducting charge trapping layer, and forming a protective layer over at least a portion of the polycide structure, the protective layer being adapted to absorb electromagnetic wave energy having a wavelength shorter than visible light. A device constructed in accordance with the method is also disclosed.
Abstract: A radio frequency power amplifier characterized by an efficiency and operative to produce an output signal at a desired output power includes an outphasing system with shunt reactance and a controller. The outphasing system with shunt reactance has a variable phase and is operative to produce the output signal from an input signal. The controller is operative to control the variable phase and the amplitude of the input signal in order to achieve high efficiency at low desired output powers. A method for controlling the output power of a radio frequency power amplifier includes reducing the power of an input signal to the power amplifier when a desired output power is below a threshold and performing outphasing when the desired output power is not below the threshold.

Abstract: In some embodiments of the present invention, a method for designing one or more surfaces of an ophthalmic lens includes representing the surfaces with parameters, choosing a function in the parameters and optimizing the function. The function may include one or more of the following terms: a term involving the magnification induced by the ophthalmic lens and a predetermined magnification distribution, a term involving the distortion induced by the ophthalmic lens and a predetermined distortion distribution, and a term involving the torsion induced by the ophthalmic lens and a predetermined torsion distribution. The function may also involve a term related to the thickness of the ophthalmic lens. The function may also involve one or more weight distributions. The method may include determining the weight distributions from a database of weight functions using a predetermined rule or an expert system.

Abstract: A method of fabricating an oxide-nitride-oxide (ONO) layer in a memory cell to retain charge well in the nitride layer includes the steps of forming a bottom oxide layer on a substrate, depositing a nitride layer and oxidizing a top oxide layer, thereby causing oxygen to be introduced into the nitride layer. Another method includes the steps of forming a bottom oxide layer on a substrate, depositing a nitride layer and oxidizing a portion of a top oxide layer, thereby causing oxygen to be introduced into the nitride layer and depositing a remaining portion of the top oxide layer, thereby assisting in controlling the amount of oxygen introduced into the nitride layer. A farther method includes the steps of forming a bottom oxide layer on a substrate, depositing a nitride layer, depositing a portion of a top oxide layer and oxidizing a remaining portion of the top oxide layer, thereby causing oxygen to be introduced into the nitride layer.
Abstract: An electrically erasable programmable read only memory (EEPROM) having a non conducting charge trapping dielectric, such as silicon nitride, sandwiched between two silicon dioxide layers acting as electrical insulators is disclosed. The invention includes a method of programming, reading and erasing the EEPROM device. The non conducting dielectric layer functions as an electrical charge trapping medium. A conducting gate layer is placed over the upper silicon dioxide layer. The memory device is programmed in the conventional manner, using hot electron programming, by applying programming voltages to the gate and the drain while the source is grounded. Hot electrons are accelerated sufficiently to be injected into the region of the trapping dielectric layer near the drain. The device, however, is read in the opposite direction from which it was written, meaning voltages are applied to the gate and the source while the drain is grounded.
