  • Patent number: 6638895
Abstract: A method of fabricating high aspect ratio ceramic structures in which a selected portion of perovskite or perovskite-like crystalline material is exposed to a high energy ion beam for a time sufficient to cause the crystalline material contacted by the ion beam to have substantially parallel columnar defects. Then selected portions of the material having substantially parallel columnar defects are etched leaving material with and without substantially parallel columnar defects in a predetermined shape having high aspect ratios of not less than 2 to 1. Etching is accomplished by optical or PMMA lithography. There is also disclosed a structure of a ceramic which is superconducting at a temperature in the range of from about 10° K. to about 90° K. with substantially parallel columnar defects in which the smallest lateral dimension of the structure is less than about 5 microns, and the thickness of the structure is greater than 2 times the smallest lateral dimension of the structure.

  • Patent number: 6624564
Abstract: For use in a color cathode ray tube (CRT) having a display screen with a flat outer surface and a curved inner surface, a 2-layer antistatic and antireflective coating for the display screen's flat outer surface compensates for the variation in screen thickness to provide uniform light transmission through the screen and coating combination, a high degree of video image contrast, effective electrostatic shielding and discharge, and reduced light reflectivity. The coating includes a first inner electrically conductive layer disposed on the CRT display screen's flat outer surface containing carbon black particles for a high level of video image contrast and improved electrical conductivity for electrostatic shielding and discharge. The extent of light transmission through the inner conductive layer may be adjusted in accordance with the display screen's thickness by varying the amount of carbon black particles in the coating solution.

  • Patent number: 6623662
Abstract: A two-layer coating for the outer surface of the display screen of a color cathode ray tube (CRT) includes an inner carbon black-based layer and an outer silica-based layer. The inner layer is antistatic, while the outer layer is antireflective. To compensate for the increased absorption of blue light by the carbon black particles, which results in a color video image having a yellowish tint, a blue additive, such as a pigment or dye, is added to the coating to adjust its light absorbance characteristics and provide uniform light absorbance over the entire visible spectrum of 400-700 nm for improved color video image presentation.

  • Patent number: 6613601
Abstract: An ultrananocrystalline diamond (UNCD) element formed in a cantilever configuration is used in a highly sensitive, ultra-small sensor for measuring acceleration, shock, vibration and static pressure over a wide dynamic range. The cantilever UNCD element may be used in combination with a single anode, with measurements made either optically or by capacitance. In another embodiment, the cantilever UNCD element is disposed between two anodes, with DC voltages applied to the two anodes. With a small AC modulated voltage applied to the UNCD cantilever element and because of the symmetry of the applied voltage and the anode-cathode gap distance in the Fowler-Nordheim equation, any change in the anode voltage ratio V1/V2 required to maintain a specified current ratio precisely matches any displacement of the UNCD cantilever element from equilibrium. By measuring changes in the anode voltage ratio required to maintain a specified current ratio, the deflection of the UNCD cantilever can be precisely determined.

  • Patent number: 6609622
Abstract: A combination bulldozer and pipelayer includes a front mounted blade, or scoop, and a side mounted pipelayer attachment. When operated as a bulldozer, a pair of endless track roller frames are free to oscillate up and down about a horizontal axis passing through the bulldozer's main frame for improved traction and grading characteristics, reduced stress on the tractor structure, and a more comfortable ride for the operator. When operated in the pipelayer mode, the track roller frames are locked in fixed position to the vehicle's main frame to provide a stable platform for lifting and transporting a heavy load such as sections of pipe. The side mounted pipelayer attachment includes a folding boom which can be stowed in a retracted position or extended to the use position by the operator using only the boom and load controls.

  • Patent number: 6590352
Abstract: The coating on the outer surface the display screen of a cathode ray tube (CRT) includes an inner conductive antistatic layer and an outer antireflective layer. When applied by a wet coating method, e.g., spray or spin coating, the two layers diffuse into one another to form a composite layer. When applied by a dry coating method, e.g., sputtering, the two layers remain separate. In the former case, a layer of conductive carbon black is applied between the composite layer and the CRT's tension (or implosion protection) band, while in the later case the conductive carbon black layer is applied between the tension band and a conductive element applied to the inner antistatic layer. The carbon black layer provides a conductive path to ground for the display screen's outer coating to prevent electrostatic charge buildup on the display screen.

  • Patent number: 6588172
Abstract: A generally planar, structural insulated panel for building construction includes a pair of outer facings disposed on opposed surfaces of a plastic foam core. One of the outer facings is of a gypsum or cementous composite for use on the panel's inner surface, while the other outer facing is of oriented strand board (OSB) or other conventional building material which forms the panel's outer surface. Disposed between and laminated to the inner surface of the gypsum or cementous composite facing and the plastic foam core by a conventional bonding agent is a sheet of paper impregnated with urethane or polyisocyanurate plastic. The impregnated sheet of paper serves as a vapor barrier near the panel's inner surface to prevent moisture from permeating from the warm interior of the structure through the plastic foam insulation to the outside.

  • Patent number: 6581535
Abstract: An agricultural seed meter is disclosed including a seed selection mechanism in the form of a belt or a drum having pockets and moving through a seed reservoir area for loading seeds into the pocket. A cut-off brush is movable between a singulating position and a volume metering position so that the meter may be used either as a singulating meter or for volume metering without changing, deleting parts or adding parts. In either mode, seed release is accurate and repeatable through the use of a retainer brush for holding the seeds in their associated pocket until the pocket, in a downward, curving path, passed beyond the end of the retainer brush, thereby releasing the seeds into a discharge conduit.

  • Patent number: 6584316
Abstract: Telephone calls are handed off from a wireless network to a wireline network under the control of a subscriber. When at a given location, the subscriber enters the directory number of the wireline terminal (typically the closest) to which a future wireless call is to be transferred. The entered directory number is then stored in memory in the subscriber's wireless terminal with the current location of the subscriber as determined by a satellite-based global positioning system (GPS) for future use. If the subscriber wants to transfer a call to a wireline terminal, the subscriber selects a transfer handoff key on the subscriber's wireless terminal. After the subscriber's location is determined using the GPS, it is then determined if a directory number (DN) of a designated wireline terminal has previously been entered and stored in memory for the subscriber's present location.
