  • Patent number: 6258872
Abstract: The present invention concerns novel methods for enhancing the mechanical performance of tissue adhesives and sealants which comprises employing a primer molecule in association with a tissue adhesive or sealant, wherein the primer molecule serves to enhance the strength of the interface between the tissue and the adhesive matrix. The primer molecules described herein function to interact with a protein present in the tissue, thereby altering its characteristics to make it more amenable to bonding with the adhesive matrix. Primer molecules may be applied to the tissue independently from the tissue adhesive or sealant or may be mixed with the tissue adhesive or sealant prior to application to the tissue.

  • Patent number: 6258545
Abstract: The present invention provides for the selective covalent modification of nucleic acids with redox active moieties such as transition metal complexes. Electron donor and electron acceptor moieties are covalently bound to the ribose-phosphate backbone of a nucleic acid at predetermined positions. The resulting complexes represent a series of new derivatives that are bimolecular templates capable of transferring electrons over very large distances at extremely fast rates. These complexes possess unique structural features which enable the use of an entirely new class of bioconductors and photoactive probes.

  • Patent number: 6253010
Abstract: A system and method for efficient coupling between optical elements comprises a memory containing an alignment module configured to align a light beam with an optical element to maximize coupling efficiency, and a processor coupled to the memory to control the alignment module. A position sensitive device indirectly senses a position of the light beam on the optical element and sends the position to the processor. The alignment module directly measures coupling efficiency where the light beam contacts the optical element. The alignment module identifies a direction of increasing coupling efficiency and aligns the light beam with the optical element along that direction until maximum coupling efficiency is achieved.

  • Patent number: 6251073
Abstract: Ultrasound apparatus for examining tissue in a region of interest in a body comprising a housing having a viewing aperture. An ultrasonic transducer is provided comprised of an array of ultrasonic elements disposed in the viewing aperture. Electrical pulses are supplied to the transducer for transducer excitation to introduce ultrasonic signals into the body for reflection from the tissue in the region of interest. The transducer is capable of converting ultrasonic signals reflected from the tissue within the body to the transducer to provide electrical signals. The electrical signals are gain corrected in accordance with time. In-phase and out-of-phase components of the electrical signals are provided and then digitized. The digitized electrical signals are collected to form one image for a single frame of the tissue in the region of interest in the body from transducer excitations less than thirty-three in number which is then displayed.

  • Patent number: RE37256
Abstract: A GPS system and method for generating precise position determinations. The GPS system includes a ground based GPS reference system which receives with a reference receiver GPS signals and makes phase measurements for the carrier components of the GPS signals. The GPS reference system then generates and broadcasts an initialization signal having a carrier component and a data link signal having a data component. The data component of the data link signal contains data representing the phase measurements made by the reference receiver. The GPS system also includes a GPS mobile system which receives with a mobile position receiver the same GPS signals as were received by the reference system. In addition, the GPS position receiver receives the data link and initialization signals broadcast by the reference system.
