Patent number: 6653954Abstract: A system and method that efficiently compresses data sets that contain one or more repetitive data values. Substitute symbols represent repeated data sequences in the compressed data output. Data sequences that terminate with one or more of a particular value are specially processed by storing their substitute symbols separately from the general substitute symbol dictionary so that they are able to be more efficiently accessed. Substitute symbols for contiguous data sequences that consist of those particular values are also stored separately. The preferred embodiment specially processes data sequences that contain data bytes equal to zero.Type: GrantFiled: February 19, 2002Date of Patent: November 25, 2003Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventor: Nenad Rijavec

Patent number: 6647527Abstract: A method for communicating between a transmitting unit and a receiving unit over a synchronous serial link. A messages formed by elementary messages is transmitted from the transmitting unit to the receiving unit, with each of the elementary messages including a useful information word. Patent number: 6639952Abstract: A method for detecting the lock-in of a loop that synchronizes an internal clock on the transmission of value pairs provided by a demodulator. According to the method, a module of a vector that has as components the values of one of the value pairs is calculated, and the module is compared with a threshold that is smaller than a theoretical module. The locked-in condition is determined according to the ratio of the number of modules found to be greater than or smaller than the threshold to the total number of modules. In one preferred method, the threshold is incremented by a first value if the module is greater than the threshold and is decremented by a second value if the module is less than the threshold. A lock-in detection circuit for detecting the lock-in of a loop is also provided. A calculation circuit calculates a module of a vector that has as components the values of one of the value pairs. A register stores a threshold and a comparator compares the stored threshold with the calculated module.Type: GrantFiled: June 15, 1999Date of Patent: October 28, 2003Assignee: STMicroelectronics S.A.Inventor: Jacques Meyer

Patent number: 6635160Abstract: The invention relates to gas sensors, particularly electrochemical gas sensors. The reliability of such gas sensors has been ascertained by regular tests, which involve exposing a sensor to a gas for test or calibration purposes. However, it has been difficult to provide a known quantity or concentration of gas. Another problem has been that blockage of a gas inlet has rendered the gas sensor unreliable. The invention provides a gas sensor having a self test capability and first and second electrodes, arranged so that test gas arrives at a separate instant at each electrode so as to generate two electric currents, the ratio of which currents provides an indication of the status of at least one electrode.Type: GrantFiled: December 28, 2001Date of Patent: October 21, 2003Assignee: Central Research Laboratories LimitedInventor: John Dodgson

Patent number: 6636290Abstract: Liquid crystal display (LCD ) panels can be formed rapidly by this method, which involves depositing liquid crystal (LC) in a central region of one substrate, depositing a fillet of epoxy material in a continuous loop along the periphery of one substrate to surround the LC material, placing a second glass substrate over the first substrate and in continuous contact with the epoxy fillet, and then causing the fillet to set by curing or cross-linking. Advantageously, the epoxy fillet can be hardened by scanning it with an infrared or ultraviolet laser focussed to avoid heating the LC material. Alternatively, the epoxy fillet can be formed from two-component epoxy by depositing one fillet of each component on the peripheral region of one of the substrates, joining the substrates to merge the two components, and then vibrating the joined substrates to enhance commingling and setting of the two components into a strong hermetic seal.Type: GrantFiled: May 10, 1999Date of Patent: October 21, 2003Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: James Henry Glownia, Gareth Geoffrey Hougham, Eric Gerhard Liniger, Robert Jacob Von Gutfeld

Patent number: 6633874Abstract: A method to serve web pages from a server linked to a network of a plurality of clients, the server coupled to a plurality of data pages and to an access log. The method begins with reading an access log to collect data identifying pages that are most frequently accessed by a plurality of clients. The pages are retrieved, at least in part, from a database server coupled to a database storage. The one or more pages are stored in a cache as identified by the access log, where each of the pages are identified in the access log with at least one category of a search criteria received from the clients. An access request is received from one or more clients for a page based upon the search criteria received from the clients. The page from cache is retrieved if the page which has been requested was previously stored in cache. On the other hand, if the page, which has been requested, was not previously stored in cache then the page is retrieved from database storage.Type: GrantFiled: September 24, 1999Date of Patent: October 14, 2003Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventor: Wendi L. Patent number: 6633451Abstract: A method is provided for writing a servo-pattern on a storage medium. According to the method, first timing marks are written at a first radial position of the storage medium, and the head is moved to a second radial position. Time intervals between selected pairs of the first timing marks are measured, and other timing marks are written at the second radial position of the storage medium. Patent number: 6625616Abstract: A method and apparatus for materials requirements planning that implements a client/server computer network with an algorithm which enables receiving and preserving input data from the client in a stateless protocol in the server, the input data from a client is preprocessed to determine the MPR state, and stored for each client in the server in a separate side container using stateless protocols. A side container containing a client's data is accessed by distinct SQL and VB code routines to perform specific reports, modification of a required materials order and/or adjustment of material availability for use dates. The preprocessing arranges the input data into record sets of all scheduled material requirements, all currently available and required materials and all unfulfilled ordered materials. The preprocessing is executed via SQL, and the processing is executed via executable code into a temporary record set that is placed into a storage container.Type: GrantFiled: July 5, 2000Date of Patent: September 23, 2003Inventors: Paul Dragon, Rande W.
