Patent number: 6965890Abstract: Disclosed is a method and device for selecting documents, such as Web pages or sites, for presentation to a user, in response to a user expression of interest, during the course of presentation to the user of a document, such as a video or audio selection, whose content varies with time. The method takes advantage of information retrieval techniques to select documents related to the portion of the temporal document in which the user has expressed interest. The method generates the search query to use to select documents by reference to text associated with the portion of the temporal document in which the user has expressed interest, as by using the closed caption test associated with the video, or by using speech recognition techniques. The method further uses a weighting function to weigh the terms used in the search query, depending on their temporal relationship to the user expression of interest.Type: GrantFiled: October 3, 2002Date of Patent: November 15, 2005Assignee: Verizon Laboratories Inc.Inventors: Jayanta Kumar Dey, Haiping Xu

Patent number: 6914966Abstract: Schemes for routing a call using caller identification are described herein. These schemes are termed “real caller ID” and can be capable of determining the identity of a calling party independent of a telephone number from which the call originated. According to one exemplary embodiment, a method of routing a call from a calling party to a receiving party may include accessing a database containing a plurality of voice templates of prior calling parties. Each voice template may have correlated therewith a call disposition parameter defined by the receiving party. Next, a voice response from the calling party may be compared with one of the plurality of voice templates stored in the database. Subsequently, the call may be routed to the receiving party based on a match between the voice response and the one of the plurality of voice templates.Type: GrantFiled: February 13, 2003Date of Patent: July 5, 2005Assignees: Verizon Laboratories Inc., BBNT Solutions LLCInventors: Robert Anthony Virzi, Marie Wenzel Meteer

Patent number: 6912525Abstract: Disclosed is a method and device for finding documents, such as Web pages, for presentation to a user, automatically or in response to a user expression of interest, which documents are part of a Web site being accessed by the user, and which documents relate to a document, such as a Web page, being accessed in the Web site. The method takes advantage of information retrieval techniques. The method generates the search query to use to find documents by reference to the text of the document in the Web site being accessed by the user. The method further uses a weighting function to weigh the terms used in the search query.Type: GrantFiled: May 8, 2000Date of Patent: June 28, 2005Assignee: Verizon Laboratories, Inc.Inventors: Renu Chipalkatti, Jeffrey Getchius, Jay Ponte

Patent number: 6907401Abstract: A portal switch is provided that controls participation of merchants in on-line aggregators, such as portals, used for buying and selling goods and services. Merchants may enable or disable participation in an aggregator site by turning on or off software settings. When participation is enabled, the merchant's site makes its catalog entries and merchant profile available to the aggregator. By enabling or disabling the switch, the merchant actively expresses a willingness to participate in (or, conversely, a desire to be excluded from) the aggregator.Type: GrantFiled: March 13, 2000Date of Patent: June 14, 2005Assignees: Verizon Corporate Services Group Inc., Genuity Inc.Inventors: John Jacques Vittal, Cynthia Grace Mills, Laurence Raphael Brothers

Patent number: 6609200Abstract: The invention includes a markup language according to the SGML standard in which document type definitions are created under which electronic documents are divided into blocks that are associated with logical fields that are specific to the type of block. Each of many different types of electronic documents can have a record mapping to a particular environment, such as a legacy environment of a banking network, a hospital's computer environment for electronic record keeping, a lending institution's computer environment for processing loan applications, or a court or arbitrator's computer system. Semantic document type definitions for various electronic document types (including, for example, electronic checks, mortgage applications, medical records, prescriptions, contracts, and the like) can be formed using mapping techniques between the logical content of the document and the block that is defined to include such content.Type: GrantFiled: December 28, 2000Date of Patent: August 19, 2003Assignees: Financial Services Technology Consortium, International Business Machines Corporation, Sun Microsystems, Inc., Clareon Corporation, Telcordia Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Milton Anderson, Frank Jaffe, Chris Hibbert, Jyri Virkki, Jeffrey Kravitz, Sheveling Chang, Elaine Palmer

Patent number: 6429939Abstract: A fiber optic sensor with a digital signal processing system and a method of using a digital signal processing system with a fiber optic sensor is disclosed. The system digitally samples the output signal of the fiber optic sensor at a frequency which is an integer multiple of the modulator drive frequency and multiplies the sampled output signal with predetermined sine and cosine coefficients corresponding to the (fundamental) modulator drive frequency and at most the second, third and fourth harmonic thereof. This simple system can maintain a constant modulation depth and modulator phase shift and provide sensor output data over a wide operating range of the fiber optic sensor. The fiber optic sensor can be employed, for example, for rotation rate and magnetic field measurements.Type: GrantFiled: July 13, 2000Date of Patent: August 6, 2002Assignee: KVH Industries, Inc.Inventors: Sidney M. Patent number: 6424416Abstract: Percentage concentrations of constituents or color components of a sample are determined using a spectral analyzer with a wide illumination spot size and detector. The analyzer irradiates the sample, picks up diffuse reflectance of individual wavelengths from the sample and spatially separates the diffuse reflectance into a response at individual wavelengths. The result is to simultaneously detect the intensities of the individual wavelengths in parallel from the sample being analyzed. Percentage constituents of a composite substance can be determined or, alternatively, the components of color in a sample can be determined by analyzing wavelengths of reflected light.Type: GrantFiled: October 25, 1999Date of Patent: July 23, 2002Assignee: Textron Systems CorporationInventors: Erich R.
