  • Patent number: 6236877
Abstract: An apparatus for separating an image of a target into a directly scattered component and a multiply scattered component by providing a stationary field stop having a first region and associated detector confocal to a point on the target. During a first interval, a light source directs a first beam to the target and the directly scattered component is selected by the first region. During a second interval, the light source directs a second beam to the target and the multiply scattered component us selected by the first region and its associated detector. Alternatively, a light source directs a first beam to the target and the directly scattered component is selected by the first region of the field stop and its associated detector, while the second region and its associated detector select for multiply scattered light.

  • Patent number: 6218633
Abstract: An electric power blower (1) includes a handle (5) mounting therein a disk-shaped speed change dial (9) which is capable of rotation on a shaft (10). The speed change dial (9) is disposed between a speed change switch (6) and a trigger switch (8) and has a cut-out (12) formed therein through which the trigger switch (8) can pass without interference, depending on the rotational position of the dial (9). The speed change dial (9) includes a stopper (13) at an free end which defines the cut-out (12). A first regulating surface (14) and a second regulating surface (15) are provided on the stopper (13), forming an angled corner therebetween. The peripheral surface of the speed change dial (9) is exposed to the outside of the blower (1) through two windows (18) in both sides of the handle (5) adjacent to the trigger switch (8) so as to allow manual rotation. • Patent number: 6212519
Abstract: The systems and methods of the invention can process a qualitative expression, typically a phrase, to generate a numerical value that represents the likelihood of an event as expressed by the given qualitative expression. The qualitative expressions typically are made up of a probability term and possibly a term of degree and one or more terms of negation. Thus, the systems described herein allow numerical information to be captured from qualitative expressions. This, allows further numeric processing and data refining, and facilitates the development of databases of information, such as databases of information about the significance of the existence of a symptom for the diagnosis of a particular disease.

  • Patent number: 6211810
Abstract: In an air traffic control radar system, a processor is described for correlating primary target data received from a target with a target report and a target track, wherein the processor has a search acquisition time that is adapted to the distance of the target from the radar site. The search acquisition time is shorter for more distant targets. The processor can employ a shorter cycle time (time quantum) to establish a correlation between target data and target reports than would otherwise be possible with conventional fixed search acquisition times. The average total dwell time may be reduced while complying with the mandated maximum processing time for more difficult radar reports.

  • Patent number: 6210033
Abstract: A magnetic induction drive for a rotatable driven member in a sealed housing, in particular, a shaft-mounted blade in a blender cup, uses a comparatively thin circular plate of a magnetizable material with circumferentially arrayed poles secured within the housing to the shaft. A brushless d.c. motor in a base separate from the housing has a rotor formed as an array of pie-shaped permanent magnet regions that interact with an electronically controlled, rotating electromagnetic field produced by a ring of stator coils. A second such permanent magnet is coupled to rotate coaxially and in unison with the rotor, with poles of opposite polarity aligned and adjacent one another. A steel disc is sandwiched between and bonded to the rotor and the second permanent magnet. The magnetic field (lines of flux) of the second magnet extends axially away from the rotor to induce magnetic poles of opposite polarity in the drive plate.

  • Patent number: 6209095
Abstract: The invention includes a markup language according to the SGML standard in which document type definitions are created under which electronic documents are divided into blocks that are associated with logical fields that are specific to the type of block. Each of many different types of electronic documents can have a record mapping to a particular environment, such as a legacy environment of a banking network, a hospital's computer environment for electronic record keeping, a lending institution's computer environment for processing loan applications, or a court or arbitrator's computer system. Semantic document type definitions for various electronic document types (including, for example, electronic checks, mortgage applications, medical records, prescriptions, contracts, and the like) can be formed using mapping techniques between the logical content of the document and the block that is defined to include such content.
