    Abstract: In a process for recovery of values contained in solid carbonaceous material, a solid carbonaceous material is comminuted and then treated in a pretreating zone at an elevated temperature with a capping agent which is at treating conditions either a liquid or a gas. The treating conditions are such that the capping agent is sorbed by the solid particulate carbonaceous material. The solid particulate carbonaceous feed material containing the sorbed capping agent is then subjected to pyrolysis in the presence of a carbon containing solid particulate source of heat and a beneficially reactive transport gas in a transport flash pyrolysis reactor, to form a pyrolysis product stream. The solid particulate carbonaceous feed material is pyrolyzed and newly formed volatilized hydrocarbon free radicals are substantially simultaneously terminated by the sorbed capping agent as such radicals are formed, to form a pyrolysis product stream.

The beneficially reactive transport gas inhibits the reactivity of the char product.

    Abstract: The gas stream obtained from the pyrolysis of solid organic wastes and containing chlorine in the form of hydrogen chloride is processed to obtain a substantially chlorine free pyrolytic oil.The gas stream is first contacted with a hydrocarbon immiscible with the pyrolytic oils to quench the gas stream and reduce the gas stream temperature close to the dew point of water. This forms a two phase condensate of the quench hydrocarbon and pyrolytic oil. The phases are separated, the pyrolytic oil recovered and the hydrocarbon recycled as the quench. The resultant gas stream is then treated for removal of hydrogen chloride from the gas stream for disposal or recovery of hydrochloric acid.

    Abstract: This invention covers a process for reducing the sulfur content of coal and coal char and the ignition temperature of coal char. Coal is converted into char at temperatures not in excess of about 1600.degree. F. The char is introduced into a caustic system which is maintained at a temperature between about 500.degree. F. to about 750.degree. F. Intimate contact is maintained between the caustic and the char for a period of about 2 to 30 minutes to leach the sulfur from the char. The desulfurized char is thereafter separated from the caustic and washed.

    Abstract: Finely divided, sulfur bearing carbonaceous materials are carried by hydrogen in counter-current flow at elevated temperatures to the flow of relatively large, metal oxide, hydrogen sulfide accepting pellets. The sulfur contained in the carbonaceous material reacts with the carrier hydrogen to form hydrogen sulfide which, in turn, reacts with the metal oxide to form the corresponding metal sulfide and water. The water and unreacted carrier hydrogen are then separated from the desulfurized carbonaceous material and following separation of water from the residual hydrogen, the hydrogen is recycled with make up hydrogen at elevated pressures to the desulfurization zone. The formed metal sulfide pellets are removed from the base of the desulfurization zone and oxidized back to the oxide state for recycle back to the opposed end of the desulfurization zone.
