Abstract: A rigid leaflet blood check valve uses a torsion wire suspension to suspend the leaflet. The leaflet is non-contacting with the housing. Complete washout of all valve parts in blood contact exists. This eliminates areas of blood stasis which exist in valves employing conventional pivot bearings. Relative motion, wear, and washout problems have been eliminated in the valve.

Abstract: A checkout terminal includes a barcode scanner, input interface, and receipt printer operatively joined to a processor for controlling operation thereof. The processor is programmed for operating the terminal in a transaction mode using the barcode scanner to read a product barcode to conduct a purchase transaction of a product. The processor is also programmed for operating in a store mode using the barcode scanner to read an supervisor barcode on a scancard presented by a supervisor for manually supervising the purchase transaction using the interface.

Abstract: A nested label includes a liner having a surface release, and a label removably bonded to the liner by an adhesive. The liner and label have respective die cuts spaced apart from each other at a skip in the liner release for obtaining different bond strengths between the label and liner on opposite sides of the label die cut.

Abstract: A turbine nozzle includes vanes joined to outer and inner bands. Each vane includes opposite sidewalls extending between leading and trailing edges, with an internal bridge extending between the sidewalls to effect forward and aft cavities. Side ribs extend along the sidewalls and project inwardly into the cavities. Each of the side ribs is truncated adjacent the bridge to uncouple the ribs therefrom and increase nozzle life.

Abstract: An integrated data storage disk and disk drive assembly includes a rotatably supported magnetic disk for storing data. A rotor is fixedly joined to the disk for rotating the disk, and includes a plurality of rotor poles. A stator includes a plurality of stator poles positioned around the rotor for sequentially cooperating with respective ones of the rotor poles for rotating the rotor to rotate the disk. The disk and drive may be fabricated using lithographic and electroplating techniques, and a plurality of coaxial disks may be driven by a single disk drive in exemplary embodiments.

Abstract: A core includes a tubular body for supporting a wound sheet roll on a spindle. The body includes an annular outer surface for receiving the sheet roll, and an annular inner surface defining a bore for receiving the spindle. A plurality of ribs project inwardly from the body inner surface and extend axially between opposite first and second openings for nesting in the corresponding slots in the spindle. At least one of the ribs includes a bowed side surface in the exemplary form of a fork for frictionally engaging a corresponding one of the spindle slots to frictionally retain the core axially thereon.

Abstract: A self-service terminal (10) incorporating an anti-fraud device is described. The anti-fraud device has a search coil (20) for detecting metal, where the search coil (20) is located in the vicinity of a user interface element (36). The search coil (20) may be located in the throat (22) of the card reader module (14d) so that the search coil (20) is in the vicinity of an area liable to placement of a fraudulent third party device. A method of preventing fraud at an SST, and an anti-fraud device for use with an SST are also described.

A preferred embodiment of the present invention is fabricated from a preprinted bond paper sheet having an underlying silicone coated kraft paper liner adhered to at least a portion of the rear side of the preprinted bond paper sheet. Portions of the preprinted bond paper sheet have die cuts which permit removal of preprinted designs on the integrated adhesive stickers or labels. Children or other interested patrons complete drawings on the placemats by placing or positioning the adhesive stickers or labels wherever the children or other interested patrons choose on the placemats. If desired, the adhered stickers and/or the remainder of the placemats may be further decorated or colored using various writing instruments, including pencils, pens, ink markers and crayons, to create a picture or artistic scene.

Abstract: An electrodiffusion pump includes a housing having an inlet, drug reservoir, and outlet. A diffusion membrane is disposed between the reservoir and outlet for diffusing the drug outwardly therethrough. Internal and external electrodes are disposed on opposite sides of the membrane. The electrodes are porous, and the external electrode is additionally perforate to expose a portion of the membrane at the outlet. The electrodes are electrically powered for driving drug ions through the membrane under electrophoresis to complement diffusion thereof.

Abstract: This invention relates to an electrically powered machine 10, for example, a card operated self service terminal (SST) and an automated teller machine (ATM). Such machines, in addition to necessary electronic circuitry and computer process controls, include means to receive a card (120), a reader (30) for reading data stored on the card, a display screen (14), a keyboard pad (16) and, in the case of an ATM a cash delivery slot (20). In the event of power failure during a customer transaction, the customer's card, for example, a bank card is captured by the machine when power is subsequently restored. Capture of a card is inconvenient to a customer. In order to overcome such inconvenience, it has been proposed to equip such a machine with a battery back-up system operable on power failure to return the card to the customer.
