  • Patent number: 5118577
Abstract: An etching and fluorinating treatment is disclosed for modifying the surface properties of magnetic data storage media and sliders for magnetic data transducing heads. Media enclosed within a plasma chamber is first exposed to an argon plasma for cleaning, then exposed to a plasma mixture including argon with either fluorine or carbon tetrafluoride, maintained at a pressure of approximately half of atmospheric pressure, at a temperature of about 100.degree. C. An electrical field is generated for forming argon, carbon and fluorine ions. The argon ions etch the carbon overcoat of the disc, while the carbon and fluorine ions combine with the carbon to form extended chain fluoropolymers, and also penetrate the carbon layer. Sliders are treated in a plasma mixture of argon and CF.sub.4. During such treatment, carbon and fluorine ions penetrate exposed surface areas of the slider, and form a reaction product of solid lubricant film.

  • Patent number: 5108781
Abstract: Magnetic recording media are controllably textured, particularly over areas designated for contact with data transducing heads. In connection with rigid media, the process includes polishing an aluminum nickel-phosphorous substrate to a specular finish, then rotating the disc while directing pulsed laser energy over a limited portion of the radius, thus forming an annular head contact band while leaving the remainder of the surface specular. The band is formed of multiple individual laser spots, each with a center depression surrounded by a substantially circular raised rim. The depth of the depressions and height of the rims are controlled primarily by laser power and firing pulse duration. The shape of individual laser spots can be altered by varying the laser beam inclination relative to the disc surface. On a larger scale, the frequency of firing the laser in combination with disc rotational speed controls the pattern or arrangement of laser spots.

  • Patent number: 5109512
Abstract: In connection with an information processing network in which multiple processing devices have individual cache memories and also share a main storage memory, a process is disclosed for allocating multiple data operations or tasks for subsequent execution by the processing devices. A plurality of task dispatching elements (TDE) forming a task dispatching queue are scanned in an order of descending priority, for either a specific affinity to a selected one of the processing devices, or a general affinity to all of the processing devices. TDEs with specific affinity are assigned immediately if the selected processor is available, while TDEs of general affinity are reserved. TDEs with a specific affinity are bypassed if the selected processor is not available, or reserved if a predetermined bypass threshold has been reached. Following the primary scan a secondary scan, in an order of ascending priority, assigns any reserved tasks to the processing devices still available, without regard to processor affinity.

  • Patent number: 5093595
Abstract: A disc drive includes a stationary frame and vertical spindle shaft, and a hub rotatable relative to the spindle shaft and supporting one or more magnetic discs. A motor for rotating the hub includes an annular stator integrally secured to the spindle shaft, and a rotor assembly integral with the hub. The rotor assembly includes an annular magnet and an annular back iron, with the magnet being spaced apart from the stator to define an air gap. The magnet includes four longitudinally disposed arcuate poles of equal size, separated from one another by flux gaps. Each of the poles has a medial region and first and second end regions on opposite sides of the medial region. The medial region is selectively magnetized to a level less than the level to which the end regions are magnetized, creating a flux gap and torque profile for the magnet particularly effective in reducing torque ripple.

  • Patent number: 5081624
Abstract: A redundant, fault-tolerant connection is provided from a local processing station to a plurality of remote processing stations, each including an I/O bus and an associated I/O bus interface logic circuit. Two of the bus interface logic circuits are connected directly to the processor interface circuit, via separate direct links. Intermediate bus interface circuits of and I/O busses of intermediate remote stations are connected between the two selected bus interface circuits, in a series arrangement including alternate link segments and bus interface circuits. Each of the bus interface circuits has pass-through capability for transmitting data in either direction, and the links and link sections also are bidirectional, enabling transmission of data in either direction and on either path between the processor interface circuit and any of the remote stations, through any intervening stations. The processor interface circuit itself is intentionally configured without such pass-through capability.

  • Patent number: 5078846
Abstract: A process is disclosed for forming magnetic media, in which a protective overcoat of either partially stabilized zirconia or partially stabilized hafnia directly overlies a magnetic thin film recording layer. First, a chromium underlayer is sputter deposited onto a planar aluminum nickel phosphorous substrate. A crystalline magnetic recording layer is deposited onto the chromium underlayer, and substantially replicates the crystalline orientation of the underlayer. The substrate, underlayer and recording layer are passivated briefly in an oxygen atmosphere. Then, the hafnia or zirconia underlayer is applied by RF reactive sputtering in an atmosphere of argon and oxygen, with the argon partial pressure at least ten times the oxygen partial pressure.

  • Patent number: 5032984
Abstract: A system for apportioning serially supplied data among eight contending memory banks tends to equalize usage among the banks despite their arrangement in a predetermined, sequential priority. Each bank has a data hold register, an OR logic gate to generate a request signal whenever its register contains data, and a negative AND gate for enabling the bank for clearing data from its register. All except the lowest priority bank further include a blocking latch and an enabling NOR gate. Each blocking latch is set when its associated bank is enabled, and then inhibits its associated AND gate and each higher priority AND gate, while enabling each lower priority NOR gate. Each enabled NOR gate provides an enabling signal to all lower priority AND gates. When the lowest priority AND gate is enabled by the NOR gates and its request signal, all blocking latches are cleared. The banks thus are utilized in a sequence that is maintained even if one or more banks are bypassed on occasion.

  • Patent number: 4982300
Abstract: A magnetic disc drive includes a rigid housing, a plurality of data storage discs rotatably mounted in the housing, and a carriage for supporting and placing transducing heads in selected dispositions with respect to the rotating discs. An actuator or voice coil motor drives the carriage, and is fixed in the vertical direction to the housing by three posts extended upwardly of a deck portion of the housing and engaging the bottom of the actuator. A metallic plate mounted integrally to the actuator and a viscoelastic polymeric layer are interposed between the actuator and the deck adjacent the posts. The posts are sufficiently flexible to permit a limited horizontal displacement of the actuator with respect to the housing, responsive to movement of the carriage. The displacement causes shear strain in the viscoelastic layer whereby the layer tends to absorb and dissipate most of the energy of vibration.
