    Abstract: A biopsy device comprises a targeting set assembly, a probe assembly, and a holster assembly, which are detachable from one another. The probe assembly comprises a tissue cutter and an internal helix mechanism. The internal helix mechanism may fully retract the cutter within the probe assembly to prevent exposure to the sharp distal end of the cutter when the probe assembly is detached from the needle assembly. When the probe assembly and needle assembly are connected, the internal helix mechanism may extend the cutter into the needle to facilitate biopsy of a tissue sample. The helix may have variable pitch for providing a first translational speed for cutting with the cutter and a second translational speed for cutter retraction.

    Abstract: A method is provided for calibrating a surgical biopsy system. The biopsy system includes a biopsy instrument and control unit. The biopsy instrument includes a piercer, rotatable cutter, and a port for receiving tissue samples. The method comprises the steps of translating the cutter distally until the translation of the cutter is stopped at an extended position and recording the extended position. The cutter is then translated from the extended position proximally until the translation of the cutter is stopped at a retracted position proximal to the extended position. The retracted position is recorded. The method further comprises the step of rotating the cutter to a rotation speed while the cutter is located at the retracted position and, if determined that the rotation speed is within a predetermined rotation speed range, a feedback signal is provided on the display allowing the operator to progress to the next procedural step.

    Abstract: A biopsy device includes a body having a cannula, a cutter positioned at least partly within the cannula, a tissue collection chamber, and a vacuum source. In one example, the biopsy device includes a cutter loader for rotating the cutter into a loaded position (e.g., open position). A trigger is engaged with a portion of the cutter loader and may be activated to allow the cutter to rotate back to a closed position. During this rotation, the cutter severs a tissue sample, which may thereafter be drawn through the cutter lumen into the tissue collection chamber under the influence of a vacuum created by the vacuum source. The vacuum source includes a piston configured to be operated by squeezing a scissors grip. A user may apply a single stroke or successive strokes to the piston to produce the vacuum.

    Abstract: A rotational locking mechanism for securing a catheter to a surgical implant is disclosed. The locking mechanism includes a deflectable extension extending from the surgical implant about the catheter attached to the surgical implant. The shape of the deflectable extension defines a slot therein. A connector having at least one tab extending therefrom is placed about the catheter at the point of attachment to the surgical implant. Rotation of the tubular connector brings at least one tab of the connector into contact with the slot in the deflectable extension and deflects and releases at least a portion of the slot as the connector rotates from an unlocked position to a locked position within the slot. The rotation motion secures the catheter to the surgical implant, and produces a feedback detectable by a surgeon rotating the tubular connector.

    Abstract: This disclosure details methods for measuring and analyzing diversification of portfolio of assets. A dimension is a logical and quantitative means to measure diversification. As the number of dimensions increases so does diversification. Strong asset correlations among each other detract from the notion of independence. A positive correlation increases risks and is therefore undesirable. Assets are embedded into a high dimensional Euclidean vector space. The entire portfolio is interpreted as a set of points whose ambient dimension is the number of assets in the portfolio. The Karhunen-Loève expansion is used to quantify the KL dimension of the geometric object induced by a portfolio. The associated dimension is taken as the measure of diversification accounts for both the number of assets and the commonality within them. This ensures that measuring diversification as a dimension accounts for the complete diversification affect of the portfolio and is thus a valuable portfolio management tool.
