  • Patent number: 4492481
Abstract: A thrust bearing assembly is provided which reduces initial axial loading on a shaft's thrust bearing in order to correspondingly reduce the required torque for rotational start-up. The shaft's bearing runner is forced in a direction away from its associated thrust bearing during initial start-up procedures by a suitable means for imparting a force on the bearing runner in a direction away from the thrust bearing. The force is provided by a piston and cylinder combination, in the preferred embodiment, which provides an axial force in a direction opposing the initial shaft loading force. An anti-friction guide bearing is used to transfer this force from the piston to the shaft and, in turn, to the bearing runner.

  • Patent number: 4488079
Abstract: A large turbine generator is provided with a stator end winding assembly that includes a large conical member outside the coils which is joined by banding with adjusting rings radially inside the coils, with an adjusting means for each banding location that includes a wedge extending through an aperture in a portion of the adjusting ring that extends away from the coil and having a fastener that is joined to the wedge so that upon the tightening of the fastener, the wedge will be forced in the axial direction bearing against the banding and hence tightening it; and in addition, the conical member is provided with projections serving as torque splines that fit within apertures of the core so as to prevent its rotational movement in operation.

  • Patent number: 4486279
Abstract: An apparatus and means for removing slivers and burrs from machined laminated components utilizes a salt solution, such as sodium nitrate, as the electrolyte which flows between a cathode and the laminated member which is connected to the positive terminal of an electrical power supply. The electrolyte is pumped into the gap between the cathode and laminated component and an electrical current flows between the laminated member and the cathode, removing metal which is deplated or released into the stream of electrolyte. The use of a salt solution, as opposed to an acidic solution, for the electrolyte fluid reduces the need for cleaning and neutralizing the acid remaining on the workpiece and, furthermore, reduces the potential hazards normally associated with the use of acids.

  • Patent number: 4486676
Abstract: The end turn region of a superconducting rotor is provided with end region support blocks that together provide channels for coil location. Within the support block channels there are intermittent supports in the form of insulating spacers extending radially both to the front and to the rear of the coil and also bottom spacers, with sheets of side insulation between the front and rear spacers and the adjacent support blocks. The intermittent supports provide access of coolant to the superconductor. They may also be formed in a manner to tilt the end region toward the pole piece for better mechanical support. A top insulating spacer is provided with cooling channels and is utilized with banding to provide secure compressive support for the end windings. Apertures in the support blocks and grooves in the spacers provide collant circulation.

  • Patent number: 4482930
Abstract: A non-linear resistor assembly protecting equipment such as series capacitors is itself protected by a bypass spark gap, the firing of which is produced by a digitized pulse train, each pulse of which indicates a known increment of energy input to the varistors and is processed by counters and logic gates to achieve an initiating firing pulse upon the occurrence of a predetermined number of pulses indicating the energy input has reached predetermined limits within a given time period. The initial firing pulse is further processed through stages including semiconductor device switching, trigger spark gap firing and energy dumping from an energy storage capacitor into the elements of the main bypass spark gap.

  • Patent number: 4456516
Abstract: An apparatus is provided which machines a generally cylindrical shaft in such a way so as to improve its roundness. A bracket is shaped to be slidably associated with the shaft in a two point contact. The bracket has a measuring means attached to it which measures the distance between a portion of the shaft's surface and a chordal line drawn between the two points of contact between the bracket and the shaft. Also provided is a means for electrochemically removing material from the surface of the shaft in response to a signal received from the measuring means which is amplified prior to being transmitted to a cathode portion of the electrochemical machining apparatus. Variations of the roundness machining apparatus incorporate placements of the cathode at various arcuate distances from the measuring means.

  • Patent number: 4409507
Abstract: A winding technique for multiphase machines is presented that utilizes a core of Q slots and P poles for M phases where Q/M is an integer but the number of slots per phase per pole Q/M/P is a non-integer expressible as a fraction N/D reduced of common factors and M and D have a common factor of at least two. Fractional-slot, nearly but not quite balanced, windings are provided by providing a distant coil grouping for D poles in which the number of coils in the coil groups for the D poles equals N for an individual phase and the pattern is repeated for the additional poles to provide the total of P pole windings. The near balancing of the windings succeeds in achieving sufficient voltage balancing and low torque harmonics for successful operation and is advantageous for avoiding a need to provide additional core designs.

  • Patent number: 4409574
Abstract: The mechanism is operable by a single test/reset push button whose initial travel from a normal operating position causes closing of test circuit contacts while power contacts are engaged. Upon an actual or test trip actuating the trip solenoid of the interrupter, a latch member releases a member holding movable power contacts and also extends the push button out due to spring action to indicate the occurrence of the trip. For resetting, the same button is again pushed to reengage the power contacts in a closed position after which release of the button returns it to its normal operating position in which the mechanism is latched.
