  • Patent number: 4316388
Abstract: A temperature detection apparatus is provided which comprises at least one light source, light guide and light detector. The light guide is placed in thermal communication with target areas whose temperatures are of interest, particularly for application in electromechanical apparatus where the target area whose temperature is of interest is relatively inaccessible and/or an electrical temperature probe would encounter interference. The light guide itself indicates temperature changes since it only transmits light when the temperature-dependent refractive index of its core exceeds that of its cladding.

  • Patent number: 4309752
Abstract: In power conversion apparatus such as a naturally commutated cycloconverter for use in converting the output of a variable speed generator to a constant frequency, there is provided an end stop control circuit for ensuring commutation of power switching devices that includes timing wave generators for both rectification and inversion end stops. The timing wave generators are phase locked with the generator outputs but are controllable by end stop bias signal derived from a variable system parameter that may be independent of the source, such as load current to provide prompt protection against converter malfunctions due to excess load currents.Further provided is an excess current detector employing, for each phase, a pair of high slew rate, high current unipolar output op amps connected in a voltage follower configuration with a common pull-up resistor and a common load capacitor to develop a peak current signal representing the greater of the positive and negative peaks of the alternating phase current.

  • Patent number: 4303972
Abstract: The firing pulses to the nonload carrying bank only of the naturally commutated thyristor power circuit of a static power converter are retarded to reduce or eliminate the interbank circulating current. In one form of the invention, half wave rectified load current signals are summed with the output waveform reference signal applied to the positive and negative bank firing pulse generators in a sense to retard the pulses in the nonload carrying bank. In another form of the invention, the inversion end stops are used to generate the retarded firing pulses in the nonload carrying bank.

  • Patent number: 4295190
Abstract: Firing pulses to the thyristors in the nonload carrying bank of a naturally commutated power circuit of a static power converter are inhibited only after the current therethrough actually goes to zero. Where the thyristors are arranged in pulse groups, the firing pulses to each group are inhibited separately and in some instances not all groups in the nonload carrying bank are inhibited. Termination of current flow through a thyristor group is determined by comparing the group output voltage with a composite signal representative of the intended group voltage which is generated by summing selected portions of the source voltages applied to the group. Further firing of the thyristors in the group is inhibited only after the difference between these two signals exceeds a preset threshold value for an interval at least equal in duration to the thyristor reverse recovery time.

  • Patent number: 4284913
Abstract: An integrated drive-generator system in which a casing housing a constant speed drive unit is attached to a casing housing a generator unit with means being provided to isolate mechanically debilitating debris within the unit which expelled it and so avoid damaging the other unit. The units share a common lubrication-coolant fluid system which provides fluid circulation to both from a reservoir. Expelled debris is isolated within the faulty unit by a barrier partition which separates the interiors of the units' casings and supports a breather which promotes fluid communication between the units' casings and permits a single pressurizing device to service both units. A scavenge pump for extracting fluid from each unit and transmitting it to the reservoir is located within the unit it services. As a result, if debris expelled by either unit becomes entrained in the fluid of that unit, only the scavenge pump within that unit will be damaged or jammed and system repair will be limited to the faulty unit.

  • Patent number: 4281371
Abstract: The quality of the output waveform of a cycloconverter is greatly improved by a feedback loop that compensates for the inherent nonlinearity of the converter forward gain. A feedback signal, preferably proportional to the current through the shunt capacitor of the converter output filter, is multiplied by a compensating signal generated by full wave rectification of the cycloconverter AC reference signal with the resultant signal summed in opposition with the reference signal before it is applied to the converter control circuit. Alternatively a more precise compensating signal can be generated through 90.degree. phase shifting and negative going full wave rectification of the sinusoidal cycloconverter reference signal.

  • Patent number: 4280071
Abstract: A vapor trap is provided for use in a liquid coolant supply pipe of a superconductive generator. The supply pipe has interiorly located, a flow constriction, an annular liquid coolant dam, and means for blocking the vapor flow through the central portion of the supply pipe. These act cooperatively to prevent the coolant vapor within the generator from flowing back through the supply pipe. This would be an undesirable condition most likely to occur during transient operating conditions when the normal flow of liquid coolant is temporarily stopped.
