  • Patent number: 6977902
Abstract: The switching system receives, originating from an external network facility, data units according to a point-to-point transmission interface format, transporting packets of a higher layer protocol. The data units originating from the external network facility are processed so as to recover first packets. Test traffic carried by second packets of the higher layer protocol is generated, and the first and second packets are multiplexed. The stream of multiplexed packets is converted into data units of the point-to-point transmission interface format, which are re-transmitted to the switching system.

  • Patent number: 6973479
Abstract: A method and system are provided for updating software configurations of line-replaceable unit (LRU) computers in a restricted architecture network such as an in-flight entertainment system (IFES). Operating in an efficient and parallel manner, each of the LRUs independently creates an individual configuration file that identifies current software components. Each of the LRUs transmits its respective configuration file to a configuration server either automatically upon startup or manually upon request. The configuration server updates a system configuration data file with the current configuration files received from the individual LRUs. In a downloading method, a download server sends a list of desired software components to the LRUs. Each of the LRUs independently and simultaneously transfer (download) the needed software from the download server. The LRU independently requests the download server to download the needed software components.

  • Patent number: 6968963
Abstract: A system and process are provided for controlling motion of a grappler of a gantry crane to avoid damaging an object to be lifted. In an embodiment, a speed of grappler movement is automatically reduced when in close proximity to the object. Furthermore, the grappler automatically stops when positioned appropriately to permit a latching mechanism to engage the object for lifting. Normal speed grappler motion is restored when the latching mechanism is fully engaged. In a particular embodiment, the grappler includes a plurality of height sensors at various positions along the grappler to determine the respective height of the grappler above a top of the object. Vertical motion of front and rear ends of the grappler are independently actuated and controlled to permit appropriate control when the grappler and/or the object are not level.

  • Patent number: 6970444
Abstract: A system and method for providing network data and system upgrades to individual nodes within an ad-hoc network without requiring network-wide information broadcasts. The system and method identifies adjacent devices authorized to share system and upgrade information. Nodes are directed to prepare and transmit requests for upgrade information from adjacent devices, such that upgrade information may be passed, from one node to the next, reaching each node in the network. The node-to-node upgrade propagation thereby replaces traditional network-wide broadcasts of upgrade information.

  • Patent number: 6967927
Abstract: Data flows generated in accordance with a connected mode protocol and formatted in packets in accordance with a non-connected mode protocol are transmitted via an ATM network. A set of virtual circuits of the ATM network is assigned in advance to each pair of access points of the ATM network, without allocating transmission rate resources to them. When an access point receives a request, formulated in accordance with the connected mode protocol, to establish a connection between a source address and a destination address accessible via another access point of the ATM network, an available virtual circuit is selected from the set assigned to this pair of access points and a resource management cell containing a request to activate the virtual circuit is transmitted on the selected virtual circuit. When this cell is received by a node of the ATM network located on the selected virtual circuit, a transmission rate resource is allocated, if it is available, to the selected virtual circuit.

  • Patent number: 6961575
Abstract: An ad-hoc, peer-to-peer radio access system for cellular communications systems using time division duplex as a way of maximizing the bits/hz/km2 for cellular systems. The network architecture of the ad-hoc system allows the radio access to be integrated with the fixed components of a conventional cellular system, PSTN or ISP. The objective is to make the system of the invention transparent to the features and services provided by the external network. The advantages of such a system to a cellular operator are that significantly less infrastructure is required, and that the RF spectrum is more efficiently utilized resulting in much lower building and operating costs. The system architecture is comprised of remote terminals, routers, gateways, and at least one gateway controller that interfaces the ad-hoc system to a cellular network system. The ad-hoc system of the invention allows for both voice and data transmissions and receptions.

  • Patent number: 6948410
Abstract: A torque wrench is provided having body and a handle that is rotatably mounted to the body for adjusting the torque setting, and an axially movable sleeve operable to selectively lock the handle. The sleeve includes a rigid member and an elastomeric member, such as an O-ring, and the sleeve is configured to act against a locking ball held in a bore of the handle. The sleeve is selectively movable between two positions: (a) a locked position wherein the rigid member firmly retains the locking ball seated in one of several detents in the body, thereby preventing rotation of the handle; and (b) an unlocked position wherein the elastomeric member biases the locking ball inwardly, deflecting when the locking ball unseats from the detent to permit handle rotation. When the sleeve is in the unlocked position, the locking ball can incrementally “click” over the detents during handle rotation.

  • Patent number: 6946442
Abstract: The use of an agent for controlling vascular permeability within the cervix is disclosed for controlling cervical ripening. To hasten cervical ripening, the agent is one which increases vascular permeability and is selected from VEGF121, VEGF145, VEGF165, VEGF189, VEGF206, a smaller, active VEGF fragment, and placenta growth factor (PlGF). If cervical ripening is to be delayed, the agent is one which reduces vascular permeability, e.g. a VEGF receptor antagonist or antibody. The agents of the present invention can be used as a means of managing labor.

  • Patent number: 6942994
Abstract: The present invention provides nucleic acid and amino acid sequences of acetyl CoA synthetase (ACS), plastidic pyruvate dehydrogenase (pPDH), ATP citrate lyase (ACL), Arabidopsis pyruvate decarboxylase (PDC), and Arabidopsis aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH), specifically ALDH-2 and ALDH-4. The present invention also provides a recombinant vector comprising a nucleic acid sequence encoding one of the aforementioned enzymes, an antisense sequence thereto or a ribozyme therefor, a cell transformed with such a vector, antibodies to the enzymes, a plant cell, a plant tissue, a plant organ or a plant in which the level of an enzyme has been altered, and a method of producing such a plant cell, plant tissue, plant organ or plant. Desirably, alteration of the level of enzyme results in an alteration of the level of acetyl CoA in the plant cell, plant tissue, plant organ or plant.

  • Patent number: 6932357
Abstract: A gear reducing collet nut assembly is provided for holding a tool bit. The assembly includes an outer grip sleeve that can be rotated to actuate a clamping structure with a bore for holding a tool bit. More specifically, the assembly includes a planetary gear system to amplify torque from the grip sleeve to facilitate effective manual operation. The assembly includes a base member that is securable to a shaft of a rotary power tool, and the planetary gears are rotatably mounted at a plurality of positions on the base member. The planetary gears are driven by a central sun gear that is fixed to the grip sleeve. The planetary gears deliver torque to a ring gear that extends peripherally around the planetary gears. Movement of the ring gear is effective to actuate the clamping structure. In an embodiment, an exterior of the ring gear is threaded to the base member and axially fixed relative to the grip sleeve.
