  • Patent number: 8160834
Abstract: The invention disclosed herein provides methods and materials for observing the state of a sensor, for example those used by diabetic patients to monitor blood glucose levels. Typically a voltage such as a voltage pulse is applied to the sensor in order to solicit a current response from which for example, factors such as impedance values can be derived. Such values can then be used as indicators of a sensor's state, for example the state of sensor hydration, sensor noise, sensor offset, sensor drift or the like.

  • Patent number: 8147659
Abstract: A gated electrode structure for altering a potential and electric field in an electrolyte near at least one working electrode is disclosed. The gated electrode structure may comprise a gate electrode biased appropriately with respect to a working electrode. Applying an appropriate static or dynamic (time varying) gate potential relative to the working electrode modifies the electric potential and field in an interfacial region between the working electrode and the electrolyte, and increases electron emission to and from states in the electrolyte, thereby facilitating an electrochemical, electrolytic or electrosynthetic reaction and reducing electrode overvoltage/overpotential.

  • Patent number: 8135702
Abstract: A method and system for eliminating unnecessary statistics collections for query optimization in a database stored on a computer. Statistics are unnecessary when a re-generated query execution plan that does not use the statistics is equivalent to an original query execution plan that uses the statistics. To determine this, an original query execution plan is created for each query in a specified workload using the statistics in the database. A search is performed of the statistics in order to enumerate one or more candidate sets of statistics to be eliminated. One or more of the candidate sets of statistics are removed from consideration prior to creating the re-generated query execution plan for each query in the specified workload.

  • Patent number: 8131757
Abstract: A method, apparatus, and computer program product provide the ability to locate and display data in a taxonomy. A canonical taxonomy is defined (that is not exposed to a user that is searching for parts) by defining canonical categories and canonical attributes in a hierarchical structure. Mapping taxonomies are defined that define mapping categories that map to both canonical categories and canonical categories plus canonical attributes. Part data is processed based on the mapping taxonomies during which the data is mapped to a canonical category. A search request is specified in a particular mapping taxonomy format and results are returned (and displayed) that include data from multiple different taxonomies.

  • Patent number: 8129257
Abstract: InP epitaxial material is directly bonded onto a Silicon-On-Insulator (SOI) wafer having Vertical Outgassing Channels (VOCs) between the bonding surface and the insulator (buried oxide, or BOX) layer. H2O and other molecules near the bonding surface migrate to the closest VOC and are quenched in the buried oxide (BOX) layer quickly by combining with bridging oxygen ions and forming pairs of stable nonbridging hydroxyl groups (Si—OH). Various sizes and spacings of channels are envisioned for various devices.

  • Patent number: 8131516
Abstract: A computer implemented method, apparatus, and article of manufacture provide the ability to utilize custom equations for the unfolding of sheet metal in a solid modeling application. A drawing model is obtained and defines a sheet metal object in the solid modeling application. User input is accepted that defines a custom equation for a first variable that is directly used to calculate a developed length for a bend in the sheet metal object. The custom equation is converted into a standard equation that produces the developed length and is accepted by a modeling kernel of the solid modeling application. The modeling kernel dynamically displays an unfolded version of the sheet metal object based on the standard equation and the calculated developed length without exposing the standard equation to the user.

  • Patent number: 8132115
Abstract: A method, apparatus and article of manufacture provide for displaying per-instance dynamic properties of an object. A reference to an object instance having a dynamic property that is supplied at runtime for the object instance on a per-instance basis and is not stored with the object is received. A reference to a property source instance, that maintains knowledge of the dynamic property, associated with the object, is retrieved. The references are provided to a control that retrieves and displays the dynamic property. Additionally, the object may provide/specify a custom ActiveX control that defines a user interface for displaying and editing one or more properties. The custom control is instantiated and used to display the property in the defined user interface.

  • Patent number: 8123613
Abstract: A system and method for tracking customer activity without need for an extensive interconnecting network. The system includes a plurality of gaming devices that are communicatively isolated from one another. Information, including tracked customer activity, bonus requirements, and in one embodiment, personal information, is stored on a memory device communicable with the gaming devices. This allows implementation of an incentive program at reduced cost because the service devices themselves need not be networked together.

  • Patent number: 8114717
Abstract: A fluorine treatment that can shape the electric field profile in electronic devices in 1, 2, or 3 dimensions is disclosed. A method to increase the breakdown voltage of AlGaN/GaN high electron mobility transistors, by the introduction of a controlled amount of dispersion into the device, is also disclosed. This dispersion is large enough to reduce the peak electric field in the channel, but low enough in order not to cause a significant decrease in the output power of the device. In this design, the whole transistor is passivated against dispersion with the exception of a small region 50 to 100 nm wide right next to the drain side of the gate. In that region, surface traps cause limited amounts of dispersion, that will spread the high electric field under the gate edge, therefore increasing the breakdown voltage.
