Abstract: A method of multilevel microfabrication processing is provided. The method includes providing a planar substrate that comprises one or more material layers. A first hardmask layer placed on top of the substrate is patterned into the lithographic pattern desired for the top lithographic layer. Subsequent hardmask layers are patterned until the number of hardmask layers equals the number of lithographic layers desired. The method includes etching into the substrate and stripping the top hardmask layer. Furthermore, the method includes alternating etching into the substrate and stripping the subsequent hardmask layers until the bottom hardmask layer is stripped.
Abstract: A solar cell includes a photoactive region that receives light. A photonic crystal is coupled to the photoactive region, wherein the photonic crystal comprises a distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) for trapping the light.

The switching system includes a first optical waveguide coupled to a first electrode, a second electrode, and a second optical waveguide. Abstract: A hierarchical composite armor is disclosed for protection against projectile impact comprising a plurality of platelets and a matrix substrate. The plurality of platelets are distributed in at least a first layer and in a second layer parallel to the first layer wherein the distribution of the platelets in the second layer is at least slightly offset from and overlaps the distribution of platelets in the first layer. The platelets are less thick than the overall thickness of the composite armor, and the platelets include a first material. The matrix substrate encapsulates the platelets, and the matrix substrate is different than the first material. The platelets and matrix substrate form an interactive network that dissipates a projectile's impact energy over an area much greater than the size of the projectile by synergistically transmitting the impact energy from platelets close to an impact location to platelets away from the impact location.

Abstract: An interferometric-spatial-phase imaging (ISPI) system includes an alignment mechanism for obtaining continuous six-axis control of a scanning probe tip with respect to a coordinate system attached to a substrate. A gap detection mechanism measures tip height above a substrate and controls tip approach toward the substrate of one or more tips, as well as measures tip deflection during surface contact of the one or more tips. A plurality of complementary marks is provided for attachment to the one or more tips. A plurality of grating marks is provided to backdiffract a reflected beam from a flexible cantilever to detect high-frequency tip deflection in a compact configuration of a light source and a light detector.
Abstract: The present invention provides an RFID tag having an identification information response function that wirelessly transmits tag identification information stored in the RFID tag in response to a predetermined wireless request, wherein, the identification information response function becomes invalid after an invalidation instruction is input from outside followed by a lapse of predetermined period of time.
Abstract: A scanning assembly is disclosed for providing controlled movement of a mirror. The scanning assembly includes a motor shaft of a limited rotation motor, a scanning device, and a scanning device mounting unit. The mirror mounting unit includes a tapered base for coupling the scanning device mounting unit to the output shaft of the limited rotation motor. One of the tapered base and the output shaft includes a cylindrical tapered male plug having a decreasing inner diameter that decreases along a direction of coupling of the tapered base and the output shaft for engaging the tapered base to the output shaft. The tapered base includes an overall taper angle of at most about 4.0 degrees from the rotational axis of the output shaft.
Abstract: An optical device includes an input optical source that provides and optical signal to the optical device. A surface phonon polariton (SPP) nanostructure receives the optical signal that interacts with the SPP nanostructure to excite a Raman process and produce a Raman light signal. The Raman light signal comprises a broad spectral range from near infrared to far infrared.
Abstract: The present invention relates to an electromagnetic vibrator of variable reluctance type, according to a new principle which provides higher efficiency, smaller dimension, and higher reliability compared to known technology. This has been obtained by that the magnetic signal flux generated by the coil is closed through a bobbin body and one or more yokes, and wherein the bobbin body and the yokes are made of laminated metal sheets having good magnetic properties.
Abstract: A seal is disclosed for use on the tapered section of a roll neck in a rolling mill. The seal comprises a flexible circular seal body having a central axis and at least one radially outwardly extending flange joined by a hinge to an angularly extending lip. The hinge has a reduced thickness as compared to the thicknesses of the flange and the lip, and the lip has converging first and second sides leading to an enlarged rim. The rim has first and second peripheral faces that converge to an outer edge contained in a reference plane parallel to the central axis of the seal body.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a safety system for use in protection functions, which system prevents that an error in one control circuit do not result in a function failure by using supervising functions comprising at least two sensors connected to a monitoring unit which receives and processes information about a position of a machine from both sensors and compares the results with stored values and a number of input conditions for the monitoring unit, whereby said sensors comprise means for generating data with respect to a position of a machine movement and said monitoring unit comprises means, which with respect to the result of the comparison is arranged to stop a machine movement if conditions for a stop are fulfilled. The monitoring unit is arranged to compare values from said sensors and when detecting deviating value from either one of sensors detecting a functional error with the sensors.
Abstract: The present invention relates to passive immunization for treating or preventing atherosclerosis using an isolated human antibody directed towards at least one oxidized fragment of apolipoprotein B in the manufacture of a pharmaceutical composition for therapeutical or prophylactical treatment of atherosclerosis by means of passive immunization, as well as method for preparing such antibodies, and a method for treating a mammal, preferably a human using such an antibody to provide for passive immunization.

Abstract: A monitoring and alarm system is disclosed for a rolling mill in which oil is pumped from a reservoir via feed piping and branch feed lines to oil film bearings and oil is returned from the bearings via branch drain lines and return piping to the reservoir. The system comprises sensors positioned in at least one of the branch feed lines, the branch return lines and the bearings. The sensors are operative to sense diverse parameters indicative of bearing operating conditions and to generate status signals representative thereof. A controller evaluates the status signals and triggers warning signals when the status signals indicate that the bearings are in danger of being damaged by continued operation. Alarms respond to the warning signals and alert mill operating personnel to such danger.

Abstract: A method for obtaining virtual path identifier, virtual channel identifier, and encapsulation values in an asynchronous transfer mode access device for a network using either non-static or static internet protocol address assignments and asynchronous transfer mode adaptation layer 5. In the non-static environment, a plurality of discovery packets are generated, but in the static environment, a plurality of address resolution protocol packets are generated. The first and second sets of packets are encapsulated and then transmitted to a central office.

Abstract: A system and method transmits graphic data received at varying frequencies at a fixed data rate. The frequency dependent data and associated data clock signal are received and the frequency dependent data is converted to frequency independent data. A ratio of a number of data clock cycles to a number of reference clock cycles is determined and transmitted. The frequency independent data and header data are transmitted, at a fixed rate, to a receiver, the fixed rate being a frequency greater than the frequency of the associated data clock signal. The received the frequency independent data is converted to frequency dependent data based upon the received determined ratio. The communication channel may include an optical fiber and a tension member wherein control data is transmitted along the tension member and graphic data is transmitted along the optical fiber.
Abstract: A sampled-data analog circuit includes a level-crossing detector. The level-crossing detector controls sampling switches to provide a precise sample of the output voltage when the level-crossing detector senses the predetermined level crossing of the input signal. The level-crossing detection may be a zero-crossing detection. An optional common-mode feedback circuit can keep the output common-mode voltage substantially constant.
