  • Patent number: 8217376
Abstract: Several methods of calibrating a wavelength-modulation spectroscopy apparatus configured to measure a concentration of an analyte in a sample gas are disclosed. Each of the methods allows for calibration and recalibration using a relatively safe gas regardless of whether the sample gas for which the concentration of the analyte can be determined is a hazardous gas. In one embodiment of the invention, calibration that is sample-gas specific is accomplished by determining a first slope coefficient and calibration function for the sample gas, after which a scaling factor can be determined based on the first slope coefficient and a second slope coefficient for the same or a different sample gas and used in a subsequent calibration (or recalibration) to scale the calibration function. In other embodiments of the invention, calibration that is not sample-gas specific is accomplished to allow for the determination of the analyte concentration in variable gas compositions and constant gas compositions.

  • Patent number: 8201454
Abstract: Ultrasonic pipeline inspection apparatus which utilizes two different wave modes (e.g. a horizontally polarized shear mode and a symmetric Lamb wave mode) to discriminate different defect types by comparing corresponding signals collected from defects. EMATs may detect the signals. The detected amplitudes of the collected signals from both wave modes are compared to calculate a ratio, which may be compared with a distribution of ratio values for known defects to evaluate the type of defect detected. The apparatus may be a sensor module mountable on a pipeline vehicle and having a plurality of sensors distributed around its periphery.

Abstract: Methods of performing ultrasonic testing are disclosed, comprising the step of determining a temperature gradient of an ultrasonic wedge. In one embodiment of the invention, the method further comprises the steps of determining a sound velocity gradient of the ultrasonic wedge to determine the time it takes for sound waves emanating from a plurality of ultrasonic transducer elements attached to the ultrasonic wedge to reach a point of interest within a test object, and firing each of the ultrasonic transducer elements in a timed sequence based on the times such that sound waves from each of the ultrasonic transducer elements reach the point of interest at the same time. In other embodiments of the invention, the total attenuation and acoustic impedance of a sound wave traveling through the ultrasonic wedge is determined to adjust the amplitude of the sound wave such that the sound wave has sufficient amplitude to perform the ultrasonic testing.

  • Patent number: 8188846
Abstract: A display system for displaying information to a vehicle operator comprises one or more projectors positioned in an operator cab of a vehicle. The projector is configured to project a heads up display of a plurality of data sets on a windscreen of the vehicle. Projected data sets are positioned in the heads up display and/or moved within the heads up display based on assessed relative priority levels of the data sets. Thus, for example, a data set with a higher assessed relative priority level may be positioned in a location of greater operator viewing prominence. If the priority level drops, the data set may be moved to a position of lower operator prominence. Respective heads up displays may be projected on more than two separate windscreens of the vehicle, either simultaneously or at alternate times, and possibly depending on an operational mode of the vehicle.
