  • Patent number: 5745984
Abstract: A multi-chip module is provided which utilizes benzocyclobutene as a laminate adhesive for bonding the upper dielectric films in a high density interconnect structure. The benzocyclobutene thermosetting polymer is spin coated on a polyimide film, and baked at low temperature to remove any solvent to leave a B-staged coating on the polyimide film. The composite film can be laminated to an underlying electrical structure using a vacuum laminator and heat. As the heat is applied, the BCB layer softens, flows and then cures to bond the polyimide film to the underlying electrical structure.

  • Patent number: 5737458
Abstract: HDI fabrication techniques are employed to form a variety of optical waveguide structures in polymer materials. Adaptive optical connections are formed, taking into account the actual position and orientation of devices which may deviate from the ideal. Structures include solid light-conducting structures, hollow light-conducting structures which are also suitable for conducting cooling fluid, and optical switching devices employing liquid crystal material. A "shrink back" method may be used to form a tunnel in polymer material which is then filled with an uncured polymer material that shrinks upon curing.

  • Patent number: 5654881
Abstract: A single-stage power converter has an input-to-output transfer characteristic with two portions, each having a different operational characteristic, with each portion being selected by changing ONLY the duty-cycle of the power switching devices. At low input voltage the converter operates as a Boost converter, while operating as a Buck converter for greater input voltages. This transfer characteristic is provided by a circuit wherein the primary winding center tap of a split-primary power transformer is coupled through an inductive element, with one of the pair of push-pull power switching devices connected to each primary winding end. Secondary winding rectification and filtering provides the power supply output in the Boost mode, and a portion of the power supply output in the Buck mode.

  • Patent number: 5650585
Abstract: An initiator, for use in a gas generator, includes an enclosed volume in communication with apertures for introducing liquid propellant and pre-pressurization gas into a propellant ignition chamber, and an aperture for introducing combusted gasses into a gas generator. A mechanism for controlling when the gases are allowed to enter the gas generator, and a heater/electrode to initiate combustion of the liquid propellant, also communicate with the enclosed volume. The propellant and the pre-pressurization gas may be introduced together or through separate ports. The heater/electrode thermally decomposes and vaporizes the propellant causing pressurization of the ignition chamber until a critical value is reached and the propellant ignites and burns. The burning propellant increases the chamber pressure beyond a predetermined value thereby opening the controlling mechanism and allowing the combusted gases to be introduced into the gas generator combustion chamber.

  • Patent number: 5647573
Abstract: To resist mechanical forces tending to unseat a fluid valve applied to seal against a high fluid pressure, a fluid valve assembly is equipped with a valve block that, in response to the high fluid pressure, causes a locking member to be forcibly wedged into clamping engagement with the stem of a valve, thereby securing the valve in its closed, seated position. When the high fluid pressure is relieved, the valve stem is unclamped, and the valve can then be readily lifted to an open position.

  • Patent number: 5642617
Abstract: A continuously variable hydrostatic transmission includes axially aligned input and output shafts journaled by a transmission housing and respectively coupled to a prime mover and a load. The input shaft drives a hydraulic pump unit, while a hydraulic motor unit is grounded to the transmission housing. A wedge-shaped swashplate is pivotally connected to the output shaft in operative position to accommodate pressurized hydraulic fluid exchanges between the pump and motor units. A controller is coupled to adjust the angular orientation of the swashplate relative to the output shaft axis and thus set the transmission ratio. A hydraulic circuit, connected into the hydraulic motor unit, is selectively operable to vent high and low fluid pressure sides of the swashplate to atmosphere, thus imposing a neutral transmission ratio condition regardless of the transmission ratio set by the controller.

  • Patent number: 5602463
Abstract: A direct current or direct voltage power supply operating from a mains AC line is corrected for power factor so that the maximum power can be extracted from the source. The AC line is full-wave rectified, filtered and the resulting pulsating direct voltage is applied to a buck/boost switched inductor switched at a frequency higher than the line frequency. The buck/boost switching action is controlled so that the switchover between buck and boost modes occurs when the instantaneous value of the pulsating direct voltage equals the supply output voltage. The inductor current in the buck mode of operation is controlled to have an input voltage-squared characteristic; the inductor current in the boost mode is controlled to have an input voltage-proportional characteristic. The resulting average current makes the AC line current substantially proportional to the AC line voltage, to achieve substantially unity power factor.

  • Patent number: 5586579
Abstract: To provide pressure relief in a fluid line of a fluidic circuit, the ball element of a shutoff valve incorporates a tube that is aligned with a pair of valve ports when the ball is in the closed valve position. A miniature check valve, positioned in the tube, operates, depending on its orientation, to check fluid flow through the tube between the valve ports in one direction and to vent fluid through the tube in the opposite direction in response to excessive fluid pressure. In an alternative embodiment, a pair of tubes are incorporated into the ball valve element, with the check valves therein oriented in opposed directions to provide bidirectional pressure relief between the valve ports.

  • Patent number: 5575152
Abstract: A continuously variable transmission includes a pump driven by an input shaft against a wedge-shaped swashplate. Hydraulic fluid pressurized in the pump flows through ports in a pump cylinder block into kidney-shaped slots in the swashplate, and from there flows into and pressurizes a series of cylinders in a motor cylinder block. The pump and motor exert first and second components of torque on the swashplate in the rotational direction on the input shaft, and the hydraulic system pressure in the swashplate slots exerts a third component of torque in the same direction on the swashplate. The third torque component is a product of the hydraulic system pressure and the differential area of the two ends of the high pressure slot at the narrow and thick sides of the wedge-shaped swashplate. The swashplate drives an output shaft through a pin connection intersecting the centerline of the output shaft where it passes through a central opening in the swashplate.

  • Patent number: 5561085
Abstract: A protective cap is deposited over the top and sides of an air bridge structure located on an integrated circuit chip. The protective cap provides mechanical strength during the application of a high density interconnect structure over the chips, to prevent deformation of the sensitive (air bridge) structure, and also to prevent any contamination from intruding under the air bridge. More importantly, the protective cap does not impede the performance of the air bridge and therefore does not need to be removed, thereby eliminating the necessity of ablating the HDI structure. Furthermore, the protective cap allows additional area for metallization to provide alternate circuits for coupling, power or ground planes, etc.
