  • Patent number: 4578199
Abstract: The invention concerns a method and apparatus for separating fluids containing particulate matter into two or more fractions of different densities. A cyclone separator (1) is utilized for this purpose and differs from previous constructions inasmuch as it is a uni-directional, air-cored device having an inlet (7) only for the fluid (A) in the top and two separate outlets (11, 15) in the bottom, remote from the inlet, one (11) of which outlets extend axially of the separator. In operation particles (as defined in the specification) once separated from the streamline (A') in which they enter the device are constrained against traversing that streamline. Means (5) are provided adjacent the inlet (7) to stabilize the initial flow of fluid. The axially extending outlet (11) may be adjustable.

  • Patent number: 4578149
Abstract: A method for utilizing hot spent liquor, produced in a digester as the result of cooking a mass of cellulosic material with cooking liquor, is displaced from the top of the digester by pumping under pressure a displacing liquid into the base of the digester. The hot liquor so displaced is collected in an accumulator, and used to preheat another mass of cellulosic material as a preliminary to cooking of this other mass of material.

  • Patent number: 4548673
Abstract: A method and apparatus for deinking a fibre stock or slurry. In order to optimize the separation process the invention proposes to independently control the air injection phase, the mixing phase, and the separation phase by splitting them into separate steps. Thus, there is provided a separation cell which is fed with slurry from an inlet. Air is introduced into the slurry before entry into the separation cell and before entering a mixing section which mixes the air and slurry before entering the separation cell. The air is introduced under pressure by way of a porous sintered sleeve, while the mixing is achieved by the provision of three turbulence discs in the preferred embodiment. Alternative turbulent generating means may be employed. The mixing ensures contact of the ink with the air bubbles which separate out in the separation cell and rise to the surface as a foam. The foam is removed by suction, while the deinked fibre slurry is drawn off from the tank by means of a weir or stand pipe.

  • Patent number: 4543977
Abstract: A balance valve for maintaining two fluid pressure systems at a predetermined pressure relative to one another. The valve comprises a piston slidably received within a bore and subjected on opposite ends to the pressure in the two systems. Each of the two systems is provided with a relief line whose communication with the associated system is controlled by movement of the piston such that any imbalance of forces acting on the piston causes the appropriate relief line to be opened to balance out the forces. The ports controlled by the piston and communicating with the relief lines are triangular in shape. In one embodiment a respective spring acts on each end of the piston to determine the relative pressure levels in the two systems. In another embodiment means is provided to resist movement of the piston in response to rapid pressure fluctuations.

  • Patent number: 4544449
Abstract: Apparatus for de-watering fibrous suspensions, which apparatus comprises a suction housing and a cover. The cover comprises two or more plank members releasably secured to the suction housing and each having secured thereto a number of foil strips. Each foil strip is secured to the plank member by way of a plurality of spaced apart pins which are carried by and project from the plank member. A channel is defined between the foil strips and the plank member which serves for the removal of water extracted from the suspension. A weir may be disposed in this channel to control the flow of water over the foils and air may be introduced into the channel by way of drillings to assist in control of the water and prevent plugging.

  • Patent number: 4479551
Abstract: A linear actuator includes a ram and a piston separated by a column of hydraulic fluid in a housing. Upward movement of the ram in the housing first seals a finite quantity of hydraulic fluid in the housing cavity. Continued upward ram movement then causes the piston, and hydraulic fluid beneath it, to move upwardly into a sealed gas chamber to compress a gas and create a source of potential energy. Release of the force moving the ram upwardly permits the compressed gas above the piston to expel the hydraulic fluid from the chamber against the ram thereby converting the potential energy in the compressed gas into kinetic energy in the ram. The hydraulic fluid bears directly against the ram to provide the working stroke of the impact device without the effect of metal fatigue from direct contact between the piston and ram.

  • Patent number: 4322208
Abstract: An apparatus for mounting and permitting swivel movement through 360.degree. of an engine driven aerodynamic propeller type of propulsion and steering unit such as used on aquatic craft. The engine and propeller are mounted on a pedestal which in turn is mounted to swivel about an axis substantially normal to the boat deck. The engine throttle cable is connected to an unique universal coupling which permits axially reciprocal movement of the throttle cable, and thereby control of the engine, independent of either the position of the engine or the extent of the rotational movement of the propulsion unit relative to the platform on which it is mounted. The propeller is connected to the engine by a centrifugal clutch to permit the engine to be started and idled without operating as a propulsion device.

  • Patent number: 4318466
Abstract: A raker boom supports a plurality of independently driven and mounted rotatable raker wheels which are applied to the face of a pile of material to dislodge and move the material downwardly toward a bucket wheel and conveyor for gathering and conveying the material to a remote location for processing. The boom is capable of rotating in a vertical plane so that the raker wheels can contact and remove all of the material through the depth of a pile. By operating the raker wheels individually and mounting them independently, the raker apparatus can travel and apply the individual raker wheels over the surface of a pile of material regardless of its contour. The wheels can break up lumps of material, especially on the surface of the pile, and mix the material with other material within the pile. In one configuration of the preferred embodiment, a pair of opposed raker wheel booms are mounted on a raker carriage which itself is mounted for reciprocal travel on a raker truss.

  • Patent number: 4285764
Abstract: A method and apparatus for continuously forming a multi-ply corrugated container board from freshly laid web plies by simultaneously forming the separate plies from aqueous slurries of fibers on corresponding foraminous fabrics, and dewatering each of them sufficiently to form a web ply capable of being handled in a papermaking machine as an integral web. All of the webs are formed on a single papermaking machine, but separately. The first web ply is laid on a traveling forming wire, such as a fourdrinier wire, and each subsequent web ply is formed in close proximity to the traveling forming wire and brought into bonding engagement seriatim with the top surface of the previously formed web ply carried on the traveling forming wire.A typical corrugated box board has three plies with the inner ply being corrugated.

  • Patent number: 4285622
Abstract: Apparatus for feeding material from a large supply of such material wherein a screw is horizontally disposed at the bottom of the piled material. Both ends of the screw are mounted in a trunnion bracket in a traversing carriage which supports the screw and allows axial movement relative to the trunnion carriages and skewing movement in a horizontal plane. A drive motor is mounted directly to the screw and is in turn supported in a trunnion bracket. Separate drive motors power the carriage at both ends of the screw. Proximity switches are disposed in conjunction with the front trunnion bracket to both limit the degree of skewing and to control the traversing motors on the carriages to keep the apparatus aligned and reciprocating beneath the piled material.
