  • Patent number: 4255356
Abstract: A method of purifying tertiary amines by removing sec. and prim. amines and/or their hydrochlorides produced in the manufacture of the tertiary amines. The impurities are removed by dissolving the impure tertiary amines in an organic solvent and the resulting solution is passed over absorbents such as aluminum oxides having a specific surface area of about 100 to 400 square meters per gram. The sec. and prim. amines and/or their hydrochlorides are retained on the adsorbents and pure tertiary amines are useful in the solvents or can be separated therefrom. The adsorbents are regenerated by passing polar solvents thereover to remove the sec. and prim. amines and/or their hydrochlorides.

  • Patent number: 4254086
Abstract: The manufacture of hydrogen and oxygen by the dissociation of water vapor at elevated temperatures followed by separation of hydrogen from the water vapor and the oxygen produced using a hydrogen permeable membrane is improved by increasing the surface area of the membrane exposed to the dissociation gas mixture. One way of increasing the surface area of contact, according to the present invention, is to form a hydrogen permeable membrane coated on one side of a porous refractory wafer with an inlet hole through the wafer connecting a beginning of the maze and an outlet at the end of the maze facing the opposite direction from the inlet. A number of these wafers are then stacked or replicated front-to-back with each outlet corresponding to the inlet of the next wafer to give a compact and efficient hydrogen diffusion separator.

  • Patent number: 4254092
Abstract: A method of separating HBr from a mixture of HBr/HCl using the difference in the stability to heat of the amine hydrohalides thereof. A mixture of HBr/HCl is treated with a solution of an amine and the HCl is split off, by the action of heat, from the amine hydrochlorides in the resulting mixture of amine hydrochlorides and amine hydrobromides, and the HBr is then recovered from the residual amine hydrobromides with the aid of a base and optionally recovered.

Abstract: A gas level indicator incorporates two Taguchi-type sensing elements, one of which is to receive air to be sampled and the other of which is insulated therefrom. A comparator circuit receives the outputs of the two elements, and an indicator actuated by the output of the circuit announces the result of the comparison. Preferably, both sensing elements are mounted in a single housing, and an elongated pipe and a fan or aspirator provided to form a probe for drawing air to be sampled from a remote position to the one element.

  • Patent number: 4250800
Abstract: Air outlet tubes for air conditioning systems are subdivided into a plurality of tube portions which are provided with corresponding positive and negative coupling elements at either end. The tube portions are of different form and length so that complete air outlets may be assembled which suit the particular requirements of each working place, desk etc. to be ventilated. With one end the air outlets are plugged into a blow-out hole which is part of the air duct extending underneath the floor. The negative and positive coupling elements may also include plugs and sockets for electric wires and telephone cables which run inside the tube portion. When the outlet tube is assembled from a plurality of tube portions each plug fits into the corresponding socket so that an outlet tube is obtained which does not only conduct the conditioned air but also includes the supply lines for the electric light and the telephone.

  • Patent number: 4235692
Abstract: It has been known that metals of groups IV-B, V-B, and VI-B of the periodic table, namely chromium, hafnium, molybdenum, niobium, tantalum, titanium, tungsten, vanadium, and zirconium and alloys thereof can be electrodeposited as dense, structurally coherent plates from a solution of the refractory metal fluoride in a molten alkali-flouride mixture in which the concentration of oxygen is reduced to and maintained at the sufficiently low level. It is shown that niobium may be plated at a lower temperature and a higher rate when the oxygen concentration is reduced to lower levels than previously attainable.

  • Patent number: 4222633
Abstract: In a grating measuring system of a basic type originated by DeLang employing a concave mirror-lens main optical system introduced by Dyson, improved separation of the light fluxes of input illumination and output motion-modulated signals is achieved. The arrangement depends upon the fact that in such a system wherein the grating is imaged back on itself so that for every point in the half plane containing the grating surface at one side of the optical axis, there is a conjugate point in the half plane at the other side of the axis. Separation by reason of beam separation is attained by illuminating one half plane and deriving output signals from the other. Further separation is attained from the fact that the concave mirror lies in a so-called "complementary plane" or "Fourier plane" to the object-image plane. Each point in the complementary plane is the focus of all rays originating in the object-image plane in a particular direction.
