  • Patent number: 6274716
Abstract: A combinatorial chemical library of compounds structurally related to the moenomycin class of antibiotics has the formula wherein D is a donor mono- or disaccharide, A is an acceptor monosaccharide, and P-R is a lipophosphoglycerate mimetic group. Members of the library have a glycosidic linkage between the anomeric carbon of D and the C2 carbon of A, and the D-A moiety is in turn covalently linked through the anomeric carbon of A to the P-R group. Members of the library exhibit their greatest structural diversity in terms of substitutions occurring at the C3 position of the A residue, substitutions at the C2 position of the D residue, and different P-R groups used in assembling the compounds. Members of the library are preferably synthesized by solid phase techniques involving stepwise coupling of the respective units to a support, functionalizing the A and/or D saccharides either before or after immobilizing them on the support, and cleaving the assembled compounds from the support.

  • Patent number: 6268222
Abstract: This invention provides a novel fluorescent article comprising a core or carrier particle having on its surface a plurality of smaller polymeric particles or nanoparticles, which are stained with different fluorescent dyes. When excited by a light source they are capable of giving off multiple fluorescent emissions simultaneously, which is useful for multiplexed analysis of a plurality of analytes in a sample. The coupled complex particles carrying on their surface fluorescent nanoparticles, methods of preparing such polymer articles, and various applications and methods of using such particles are claimed.

  • Patent number: 6252133
Abstract: A method of reconstituting an animal embryo involves transferring a diploid nucleus into an oocyte which is arrested in the metaphase of the second meiotic division. The oocyte is not activated at the time of transfer, so that the donor nucleus is kept exposed to the recipient cytoplasm for a period of time. The diploid nucleus can be donated by a cell in either the G0 or G1 phase of the cell cycle at the time of transfer. Subsequently, the reconstituted embryo is activated. Correct ploidy is maintained during activation, for example, by incubating the reconstituted embryo in the presence of a microtubule inhibitor such as nocodazole. The reconstituted embryo may then give rise to one or more live animal births. The invention is useful in the production of transgenic animals as well as non-transgenics of high genetic merit.

  • Patent number: 6226035
Abstract: Optical systems are disclosed that enable an image sensor to generate an image of either a wide-angle view of an area of interest, or a direct view of an area of interest. In an embodiment, a wide-angle optical system is mounted to reflect radiation reflected from the area of interest along an optical axis. Radiation on the optical axis is directed to a zoom lens of the image sensor. Optionally, a planar mirror redirects the radiation, so that the optical axis is angled with respect to a central axis of the image sensor. In the preferred embodiment, the image sensor is a pan-tilt-zoom camera that can move from the wide-angle view to a direct view of a target or region of interest, using pan, tilt, and zoom controls, under either remote or automatic control. The disclosure also provides a method for maintaining registration of the image sensor when it is moved from a wide-angle view of a target to a direct view of a target.

  • Patent number: 6207178
Abstract: The present invention is in the area of administration forms and delivery systems for drugs, vaccines and other biologically active agents. More specifically the invention is related to the preparation of suspensions of colloidal solid lipid particles (SLPs) of predominantly anisometrical shape with the lipid matrix being in a stable polymorphic modification and of suspensions of micron and submicron particles of bioactive agents (PBAs); as well as to the use of such suspensions or the lyophilizates thereof as delivery systems primarily for the parenteral administration of preferably poorly water-soluble bioactive substances, particularly drugs, and to their use in cosmetic, food and agricultural products. SLPs and PBAs are prepared by the following emulsification process: (1) A solid lipid or bioactive agent or a mixture of solid lipids or bioactive agents is melted.

  • Patent number: 6194393
Abstract: The invention relates to methods that permit the rapid construction of oligosaccharides and other glycoconjugates. Methods for forming multiple glycosidic linkages in solution in a single step are disclosed. The invention takes advantage of the discovery that the relative reactivity of glycoside residues containing anomeric sulfoxides and nucleophilic functional groups can be controlled. In another aspect of the invention, the reactivity of activated anomeric sugar sulfoxides is utilized in a solid phase method for the formation of glycosidic linkages. The methods disclosed may be applied to the preparation of specific oligosaccharides and other glycoconjugates, as well as to the preparation of glycosidic libraries comprising mixtures of various oligosaccharides, including glycoconjugates, which can be screened for biological activity.

  • Patent number: 6192381
Abstract: A data management system user interface allows users to enter, store, retrieve, and display multiple, related groups of information in a single document. The interface loads document data into a separate template which defines various fields, and the interface determines the fields that should be displayed based on the information entered by the user. The user enters an unlimited amount of data into each field, thus creating a free-flowing document, and the user can create groups of entries for each field. The interface also contains a data validation and error correction feature, that provides automatic correction, prompts for manual correction, and allows the user to save a draft document with a list of errors for future correction at a later date.
