  • Patent number: 4880602
Abstract: A technique and receptacle for disinfecting biological fluids such as whole blood is described in which the disinfectant is prepositioned in a receptacle for biological fluids utilized for clinical evaluation in an amount which is sufficient to disinfect the fluid without interfering with subsequent clinical evaluation. The invention is specifically directed to disinfecting viral contaminants in blood by providing a closed container for the blood specimen which contains an amount of a disinfectant sufficient to destroy without otherwise affecting the integrity of the specimen for future evaluation. The amount of disinfectant positioned in the container is adjusted to provide an ultimate concentration in the blood specimen of aldehyde of about 0.001 to 5.0 weight percent and is buffered to a pH of about 7.2 to 8.5 percent preferably about 7.4.

  • Patent number: 4837017
Abstract: The present invention relates to a non-enzymatic and non-toxic urease antigen and a method for its production. Administration of the urease antigen in living organisms serves to immunize the same from certain types of ammonia production without causing ammonia toxicity when injected, thereby promoting several advantageous biological activities including the promotion of wound healing, and general immunity from ammonia toxicity and the related effects thereof, and the cessation of toxic ammonia production in infections caused by urea splitting organisms.

  • Patent number: 4813855
Abstract: A peristaltic pump for pumping fluids through a flexible tube is described which has a quick release and engagement mechanism that permits easy and rapid removal or insertion of the flexible tube into the device. The quick release and engagement mechanism of the invention consists of a shoe mounted for vertical displacement on the body of the pump. Upward movement of the shoe engages the flexible tube holding the fluid to be pumped and locks the tube against the roller assembly containing an eccentrically mounted roller which intermittently engages the tube and forces fluid out of it. To disengage the flexible tube from the pump, the shoe is moved downward out of contact with the flexible tube.

  • Patent number: 4763570
Abstract: A device is disclosed for simultaneously applying heat to food such as pasta while applying agitation in the form of a repetitive irregular rotational motion similar to that of a chef constantly turning the contents of a pan while it is being heated. The device of the invention comprises a pan with cover removably suspended from an elongated beam assembly which is horizontally disposed for repetitive reciprocating movement to impart the desired rotational motion to the container holding the food while it is being heated. One end of the beam assembly is connected to a rotating arm which imparts a reciprocating movement to the beam. The beam assembly is supported at a point between its two ends to accommodate the reciprocating motion imparted by the rotating wheel.

  • Patent number: 4665744
Abstract: A combined wind direction indicator and rain gauge is described in which the rain gauge is mounted on a vertically suspended sail at one end of a horizontally disposed elongated member which rotates in a horizontal circle in response to the force of inpinging wind. The rain gauge is so disposed that it is always maintained with its open mouth pointed into the direction of wind and at an angle of such that it coincides with the inclination of disending rainfall. Accuracy in measuring rainfall over a given period of time is thereby enhanced since the amount of rainfall collected will not be influenced by the angle of decent thereof. The device is further characterized by having a weighted head at the end of the elongated member remote from the rain gauge to counter balance the weight of the rain gauge and the sail on which it is mounted.

  • Patent number: 4593518
Abstract: The invention comprises a novel apparatus having a plurality of flexible members which extend downstream horizontally along a wrapping conveying assembly for making unitary packages which are wrapped on all sides. The apparatus is particularly adapted for wrapping of loads with lengths and circumferences which vary substantially from one load to the next. Film is wrapped around the load, the flexible members and the conveying assembly with the load being carried off by another conveyor. The flexible members extend from the load being wrapped to the previous load which has been wrapped so that the stretched film is wrapped around the flexible member between loads causing the flexible members to be pulled inward forming a configuration resembling an hour glass. As the loads are being continuous bundled, the wrapped bundles can be transported downstream to a cutting and sealing area where the wrap is severed and optionally sealed forming individually enclosed wrapped packages.

  • Patent number: 4590959
Abstract: A valve assembly comprising a movable valve member which is urged resiliently toward a valve seat and which is actuated by a connecting rod.In order to ensure that the connecting rod does not become accidentally disengaged from the movable valve member, but is nevertheless releasable therefrom, the connecting rod is arranged to be received in a pocket in the movable valve member, which pocket is closed by a slotted plate. The slot allows the end of the connecting rod to be inserted into the pocket in one relative angular position while preventing it from being removed when in any other angular position. The end of the connecting rod is T-shaped and is rotated 90.degree. after being passed through the slot. The pocket has a groove which receives the head of the T-shaped end to prevent relative rotation of the valve member in use. The connecting rod is operated by way of a crank which goes over center when the valve is fully open.

  • Patent number: 4590992
Abstract: Disclosed is a system for conditioning a load using circulation of temperature controlled water where there is provided thermal storage means for holding varying volumes of water at different temperatures and the storage means comprises at least one tank having a constant cross-section between opposed vertical ends. A disc between the ends of the tank separates the tank into first and second variable volume chambers and prevents blending of water at different temperatures in the chambers. Conduits selectively feed water into one chamber while simutaneously removing water from the other chamber, the disc means moving in the tank in accordance with the feeding and withdrawal of water from the chambers whereby the volume of water in each chamber may vary but the total volume of water in the tank means is substantially constant.

  • Patent number: 4581678
Abstract: In an assembly of circuit components, such as a multiplicity of RF interference suppression filters, the filter elements (15) in a first array are secured to a first plate (16) at solder joints (17) and further filter elements (18) in a second array are secured to a second flat plate (19) at solder joints (20). The first array of filter elements (15) thus extend through apertures (21b) in the second plate (19) and the second array of filter elements (18) extend through apertures (21a) in the first plate (16). The plates (16) and (19) are secured together after the soldering operation and the interspersed arrays of filter elements (15) and (18) can be individually inspected as to the adequacy of the solder joint.

  • Patent number: 4577551
Abstract: A cooking apparatus which provides appropriate complex pan agitation for preparation of fettuccine or the like. A pan is mounted over a heat source in a stove frame on rollers mounted to opposite sides of the pan and received in elongated parallel tracks which extend at an angle to the horizontal. A handle extending from the pan engages a drive rod eccentrically mounted to a rotating crank wheel, so that the joint of the drive rod and the handle moves in a generally circular path. The pan is moved reciprocally along the tracks by the action of the drive rod, while passage of the junction of the drive rod and handle above or below the plane of the tracks causes the pan to pivot on the rollers received in the tracks. A heat control is provided for adjustment of the heat level provided to the pan from the heat source, and a speed control is provided for adjustment of the rate at which the crank wheel rotates to move the rod and pan.
