  • Patent number: 7088434
Abstract: An apparatus, system and method for providing spot lighting for observing a gemstone is presented. In particular, the spot lighting provided by the invention allows for observing of the fire of a gemstone, i.e. the visible effects of light dispersion into separate colors. The apparatus includes a tube for receiving a portion of a multi-spectral light source, and a mask coupled to the tube for blocking other portions of the light source. By selecting the proper tube dimensions and aligning the tube with both the light source at an inlet and a gemstone at an outlet, the spot lighting source provides direct lighting for isolating and accentuating the effects of fire.

  • Patent number: 7089125
Abstract: A method of determining an energy load on a power distribution component, and a system for storing such method are presented. The method entails collecting meter data (in various formats) and weather data. The meter data and the weather data are correlated to generate tuning equations, each of which is associated with at least one of the meters and indicates a weather sensitivity of that meter. Any meter data that is in the hourly or daily format are normalized to generate normalized hourly loadshapes that are independent of weather conditions and weekly variations. These normalized hourly loadshapes are combined with the tuning equations to generate a set of model coefficients for each of the meters. The set of model coefficients reflects weather conditions and weekly variations for one of the meters, and is useful for determining an energy load on the power distribution component.

  • Patent number: 7085120
Abstract: The invention is a grounding device that grounds the wearer when the wearer is in a designated area and automatically disengages when the wearer leaves the designated area. In more detail, the grounding device includes a wristband that is electrically coupled to a grounded object with a fastening mechanism, wherein the fastening mechanism automatically releases to separate the wristband from the grounded object if the wristband is outside of the designated area. Where the fastening mechanism includes a coupling mechanism (e.g., a wire), there may be a rotating device that retracts the coupling mechanism after the fastening mechanism is released. The device may be enhanced with a grounding device monitoring unit that monitors whether the grounding device is in use and a sensor that detects whether the operator is in the designated area, so that an alarm is triggered if the operator is in the designated area and the grounding device is not in use.

Abstract: A method of improving the viewing angle of a vertically-aligned liquid crystal display device is presented. The method involves designing a uniaxial compensation film to provide a retardation value of 200 nm or less for light having a wavelength of about 550 nm. Using this uniaxial compensation film, a display device can be built by obtaining a liquid crystal panel with liquid crystal molecules contained between glass substrates, coupling the uniaxial compensation film to at least one of the glass substrates, and coupling a polarization film and electrodes to the compensation film. Preferably, the uniaxial compensation film has a thickness less than or equal to 50 microns. Where there are multiple compensation films, the total thickness and the total retardation values should be considered.
