  • Patent number: 7457714
Abstract: Systems and methods for determining the fraction of a first phase of a multiphase fluid flow stream, such as the amount of water in crude petroleum oil flowing from a production well or container. An electrical property, such as permittivity, and a physical property, such as density, are used as the basis of the improved characterization. The method is particularly well-suited to reduce salinity-dependent uncertainties for wells experiencing high water cuts. A time series of measurements is collected, and the extrema of the observed values are used to generate a hindsight auto-calibration and correction to the other values using knowledge of the degree of uncertainty in the measurements caused by variable salinity and variable phase state of the multiphase fluid. The hindsight auto-calibration and corrections thus permit more accurate measurements of the instantaneous and the cumulative amounts of each phase in the multiphase fluid flow stream.

  • Patent number: 7431094
Abstract: A method of operating a safety joint that allows disconnection from a downhole section of a drill string without rotating the drill string. In an example class of embodiments, the innovative safety joint includes a sleeve with a j-slot that fits to a lug attached to the mandrel. A piston is attached to the sleeve. The safety joint is disconnected by first pulling up on the string to shear a set of shear pins, the upward movement also lifting the sleeve and piston. As the piston lifts, a passage through a part of the piston allows fluid to move from an upper chamber to a lower chamber. A valve prevents fluid from moving back up into the upper chamber, so that the lower chamber acts as a stop to prevent the piston and sleeve from lowering again. Downward pressure on the drill string forces a lug against the j-slot, causing the sleeve to rotate until the lug is aligned with a vertical slot of the j-slot.

  • Patent number: 7433762
Abstract: Methods for controlling at least two actuators are provided. An internal control system sends an input received from the main control system to a first actuator and diverts a portion of the input to a second actuator when an input constraint of the first actuator is reached. The actuators may be throttle valves for heating a hydraulic line. The internal control system includes a cutoff rerouter for implementing the sending and the diverting of the input and an adaptive cutoff controller, e.g., an integral controller, for determining the input constraint of the first actuator.

  • Patent number: 7416565
Abstract: A transtibial patellar tendon bearing (PTB) prosthesis for below the knee amputees is disclosed. The prosthesis includes a socket, and a foot prosthesis attached to a modular shank component using a foot rotator device. Using the rotator device, the foot component of the prosthesis may be smoothly and axially rotated internally or externally ±150° with respect to the shank component about the axis of the shank component. The wide range of axial rotation enables a more even load distribution on the whole lower limb of an amputee and enables an amputee to comfortably assume a wide range of biomechanical positions, such as sitting or kneeling. A recoil spring, having a selectable tension, is positioned within the rotatable component and selectively limits and retains the relative rotation of the upper portion and the lower portions. A locking mechanism selectively prevents rotation when the foot component is engaged.

  • Patent number: 7415364
Abstract: Methods and systems for controlling processes related to the amount of fluid in a container subjected to externally-excited motions. Fluid level sensor measurements in processing tanks on-board boats are confused by ocean waves and swells. A hydrodynamic model of a fluid in a tank can be constructed using non-linear dynamic model algorithms with inputs such as multi-axis accelerations, fluid viscosity, and apparent level measurements. The model can be used to filter-out boat motion disturbances to obtain a corrected level of the fluid in the tank. The corrected fluid level signal can be further processed using a dynamic model of the tank and associated input and output flow rates in a closed loop observer. The methods and systems are especially advantageous for offshore equipment such as cementing and fracturing ships.

  • Patent number: 7407625
Abstract: Systems and methods for measuring the moisture and sediment content of a petroleum sample. In one embodiment, a sample to be tested is collected in a field bottle. The sample from the field bottle is then transferred from the field bottle, and into and through a measurement column containing a high-uptake gelling agent, such as a superabsorbent polymer. The sample's moisture is determined by measuring the expanded volume of the high-uptake gelling agent. The measurement column also contains a sediment measurement section having a sediment filter and a sight glass with graduations to measure the sediment content of the sample.

  • Patent number: 7385608
Abstract: Redundant changes of tracked state issued by an application are filtered out by comparing the new state value with the old value, and if they are the same, no update is made. State changes are collected in on-chip memory and added to the bin if the state vector associated with the bin is out of date. State changes within a bin are done incrementally in temporal order, and a bin is only brought up to date prior to adding in a new primitive if the state has changed since the last primitive was added to it.

  • Patent number: 7366359
Abstract: A system and method for providing privacy regions in a picture or video. In one example embodiment, a camera is provided which has a lens system and detector, image processing circuitry, compression and formatting circuitry, and control circuitry. • Patent number: 7325607
Abstract: A system and method to model and analyze the mixing energies of high-yielding non-Newtonian fluids to prevent chemical lost circulation. Laboratory tests are performed under varying conditions from which data on the mixing energies needed to optimize the use of high-yielding non-Newtonian fluids to prevent lost circulation is obtained. This data is then applied to a non-linear mathematical modeling system that is capable of scaling the data to give a dimensionless value. This value can be combined with historic information to predict optimal flow rates and mixtures to prevent chemical lost circulation. This data may be verified by means of simulation, lab testing, or application to a full-size well.

  • Patent number: 6648082
Abstract: An apparatus and accompanying method for monitoring and reporting downhole bit failure. Individual sensors are placed on a sub which is separate from the drill bit itself, and are powered by a vibration driven power system. The sensor readings are used to compute values which represent the ratios of sensor readings on one sensor in relation to the readings of one or more other sensors. This creates a self-calibrating sensor system that accounts for changes in downhole conditions which might cause sensor readings to fluctuate, but which do not indicate failure.

  • Patent number: 6634441
Abstract: A system and method for detecting the wear of a roller bit bearing on a roller drill bit body where the roller element has a plurality of cutting elements and is rotatably attached to the roller drill bit body at the bearing. In the invention, a rotation impeder is in between the roller element and roller drill bit body and upon uneven rotation of the roller element which indicates that the roller element bearing may fail, the rotation impeder impedes the rotation of the roller element. The drill rig operator at the surface can cease drilling operations upon detection of the cessation of rotation of the roller element. The rotation impeder can also be seated in a drilling fluid outlet and cause a detectable loss in drilling fluid pressure when dislodged to otherwise cease rotation of the roller drill bit.

  • Patent number: 6631772
Abstract: A system and method for detecting the wear of a roller bit bearing between a roller drill bit body and a roller bit rotatably attached to the roller drill bit body. A valve-plug is placed between the roller drill bit body and roller bit such that the valve-plug is removably fitted in a drilling fluid outlet in the roller drill bit body, and the valve-plug extends into a channel in the roller bit whereby uneven rotation or vibration of the roller bit causes the valve-plug to impact the sides of the channel which removes the valve-plug from the drilling fluid outlet to cause drilling fluid to flow through the drilling fluid outlet. The drop in pressure from the drilling fluid flowing through the drilling fluid outlet indicates that the roller bit is worn and may fail.
