  • Patent number: 7093346
Abstract: A hard disk hub has a disk-mounting face formed at one end as a truncated conical surface of revolution symmetric about the hub axis. A cylindrical inner hub member is coaxial with the hub body outside diameter and the surrounding mounting face. The inner hub member is adapted to receive a planar disk with a central mounting hole with disk inside diameter fitted around it. The mounting face is disposed at a hub conning angle (?/2+/??) relative to the hub axis. Hub conning angle ? is selected so that a disk mounting force F applied to an inner disk portion surrounding the central mounting opening bends a portion of the disk interior to the hub inside diameter to conform contiguous facing relationship with the conical disk-mounting face. This interior bending portion reduces or eliminates the tendency of the outer disk portion to form an excessive conning angle ?.

  • Patent number: 7089649
Abstract: Thermal pole tip protrusion is caused by materials in and around head slider expanding during write operations till they protrude, leading to contact with the rotating disk surface, altering the flying height and often wearing down part of the disk surface. While well known that read-write heads expand during writing, the inventors who recognized this situation's significance, particularly as flying height decreases and data rates increase, both required for high areal density disk drives. The inventors realized that they could detect the problem at the spin stand level by testing head gimbal assemblies to reliably, and inexpensively, predict the tendency for thermal pole tip protrusion. This leads to selection of head gimbal assemblies, which do not have the thermal pole tip protrusion tendency. The selected head gimbal assemblies have better reliability, as do actuators and disk drives made with the selected head gimbal assemblies.

  • Patent number: 7092248
Abstract: A computer is formed by two detachable modules that are electrically connected by a separable electrical connector assembly whose two respective socket-plug mating members are mounted on respective opposing mating surfaces of the two modules. The opposing electrical connector members are disposed on the opposing surfaces to be electrically and physically mated when the connectors are aligned and the two mating surfaces are in proximal contact. In some embodiments of the invention, computer functions are physically segmented into functionally differentiated modules (display function, processor function, memory function, etc.). Segmented computer functions are characterized by a measure of a reliability characteristic and segregated into one or another of the separable modules according to the rank order of the reliability characteristic measures. In another embodiment, the segregation is based on the likelihood a component will be upgraded.

  • Patent number: 7036401
Abstract: A multi-piece socket system having a large internal cavity to allow a protrusion of a long rod or other workpiece to extend into the socket. The socket section has at least two pieces: a drive adaptor and a socket. Optionally, one or more extension collars may also be used. When assembled, the socket, extension collar(s) if used, and drive adaptor form a long tubular body into which a rod or other central member may enter while the nut is being driven onto the rod. The drive adaptor, extension collars, and sockets preferably attach together using a plurality of interlocking teeth on the ends of each member. For further stability, a spring biased pin extends from the wall of one member and through a hole in the wall of the mating member. Additional attachments, such as a threaded rod and drill chuck, may also be used.

  • Patent number: 7031095
Abstract: The invention applies to servo controllers for at least the voice coil motor of a hard disk drive. Today, many control algorithms require 80 to 90 percent of the sampling period to complete their calculation of the next control, making computation time delay no longer negligible. The invention accommodates the transport delay, such as computation time delay, into the state estimator and into the whole control system. Experimental results using a commercial hard drive, as well as simulation results, show that the invention's method effectively improves the hard disk drive control system stability by increasing the phase margin and gain margin. The invention includes the method of operating the servo-controller, as well as the apparatus implementing that method. The invention also includes hard disk drives containing servo-controllers implementing the method, and program systems residing in accessibly coupled memory to a computer within the servo controller implementing the method.

  • Patent number: 7009803
Abstract: The invention operates two control paths. The micro-actuator control stimulates the micro-actuator. The voice coil motor control path includes the voice coil motor control generating a voice coil control signal, notch filtered to remove at least one significant excitation resonance for a notch filtered voice coil control signal. Amplifying the notch filtered voice coil control signal by a tuning gain stimulates the voice coil motor. A decoupling feedback filter uses the micro-actuator control signal to create a decoupling feedback signal used to decouple the two control paths. A track following command, with PES removed, directs the micro-actuator control. The voice coil motor control is directed by the track following command, with both PES and decoupling feedback signal removed. Preferably, the servo-controller digitally supports the elements of the invention. Implementing the method may preferably include the servo-controller program system residing in an accessibly coupled memory.

  • Patent number: 7009804
Abstract: A sinusoidal signal is added to the notch filtered micro-actuator control signal stimulating the micro-actuator. The voice coil control signal is notch filtered to remove the frequency component of the sinusoidal signal before it stimulates the voice coil motor. The micro-actuator control signal is notch filtered to remove the frequency component of the sinusoidal signal before it stimulates the micro-actuator. The response of the system is measured as the Position Error Signal (PES), for the magnetic head moved by the micro-actuator. The measured PES is then demodulated at the frequency of the sinusoidal signal to create a measured amplitude. The stroke sensitivity is then calculated from the measured amplitude and amplitude of the sinusoidal stimulus. The frequency of the sinusoidal signal and notch filters is essentially the same, chosen away from significant excitation frequencies and outside the bandwidth of the servo system.

  • Patent number: 6964152
Abstract: The invention is a harvester particularly suited for harvesting baby greens. The harvester generally comprises a chassis with wheels that travel in the furrows between raised beds, a sorting belt assembly, and an articulated connection to a cutting assembly on a floating header. The floating header rides on the top surface of a raised bed and is articulated so that the floating header can move independently of the chassis to follow the contours of the top of the raised bed so that the cutting assembly can cut at a uniform height. The sorting belt assembly includes a series of belts for collecting and sorting the cut baby greens at the easiest and most effective time to do so, immediately after the baby greens are cut and before the baby greens are clumped in storage bins or in other storage container. The invention further includes a method of using the harvester of the invention in which the forward momentum of harvester and the density of the crop are used to assist the cut product onto the collection belt.
