  • Patent number: 7158680
Abstract: An apparatus and methods for processing video data are described. The invention provides a representation of video data that can be used to assess agreement between the data and a fitting model for a particular parameterization of the data. This allows the comparison of different parameterization techniques and the selection of the optimum one for continued video processing of the particular data. The representation can be utilized in intermediate form as part of a larger process or as a feedback mechanism for processing video data. When utilized in its intermediate form, the invention can be used in processes for storage, enhancement, refinement, feature extraction, compression, coding, and transmission of video data.

  • Patent number: 7155919
Abstract: An electronic controller maintains the operating temperature of a cryopump by controlling a heater coupled to the cryopump. The heater is coupled to a cryopumping surface of the cryopump. The controller can control the operation of the heater in response to feedback from temperature sensors coupled to the cryopump. The controller can cause the heater to shut-off if a temperature sensor reads out of its normal temperature range.

  • Patent number: 7152073
Abstract: The present invention relates to the usage pattern, commonly found in many software applications, of defining sets of objects based on object attributes. A specifically designed set definition language for defining sets, called SDL, is described and a software system that implements this language efficiently on top of a standard relational database management system (RDBMS) is presented. The unique features of the SDL language are the implicit constraints that are enforced on the relational data that belong to the objects. Unique to the SDL system is also the logical metadata of dimensions that enables the SDL system to enforce these constraints across relations. The SDL system utilizes several optimization techniques to enable efficient implementation on top of RDBMS. It is also shown how the SDL language and the SQL language can be merged with bidirectional inlining using syntactic gates. Query composition tools are also described that facilitate the creation of SDL expressions.

  • Patent number: 7148008
Abstract: Methods are disclosed for predicting the efficacy of a drug for treating an inflammatory disease in a human patient, including: obtaining a sample of cells from the patient; obtaining a gene expression profile of the sample in the absence and presence of in vitro modulation of the cells with specific cytokines and/or mediators; and comparing the gene expression profile of the sample with a reference gene expression profile, wherein similarities between the sample expression profile and the reference expression profile predicts the efficacy of the drug for treating the inflammatory disease in the patient.

  • Patent number: 7148251
Abstract: Novel prodrugs of amino ceramide-like compounds are provided which inhibit glucosyl ceramide (GlcCer) formation by inhibiting the enzyme GlcCer synthase, thereby lowering the level of glycosphingolipids. The compounds of the present invention have improved GlcCer synthase inhibition activity and are therefore highly useful in therapeutic methods for treating various conditions and diseases associated with altered glycosphingolipid levels.

  • Patent number: 7145985
Abstract: The invention relates to digital scanning imaging by electromagnetic radiation. To reduce the difference between the resolutions in, the scanning direction and the direction perpendicular thereto, pixels (P1, P2, P3, P4, P5, P6) in the scanning direction are connected to counters (C1, C2, C3) through switching means (Sm1, Sm2, Sm3) which allow pulses to be directed to the counter of a neighboring pixel, in addition to its own pixel, for counting, whereby the reading area can be divided into a plurality of “partial pixels” and by suitably changing the switch positions, it is possible to follow the imaging scan as reading areas formed by the “partial pixels”.

  • Patent number: 7145964
Abstract: The present invention provides for making code rate adjustments and modulation type adjustments in a pseudonoise (PN) encoded CDMA system. Coding rate adjustments may be made by changing the number of information bits per symbol, or Forward Error Code (FEC) coding rate. A forward error correction (FEC) block size is maintained at a constant amount. Therefore, as the number of information bits per symbol are increased, an integer multiple of bits per epoch is always maintained. The scheme permits for a greater flexibility and selection of effective data rates providing information bit rates ranging from, for example, approximately 50 kilobits per second to over 5 mega bits per second (Mbps) in one preferred embodiment.

  • Patent number: 7146366
Abstract: A mechanism controls concurrency among database transactions through the use of serial ordering relations. The ordering relations are computed dynamically in response to patterns of use. An embodiment of the present invention serializes a transaction that accesses a resource before a transaction that modifies the resource, even if the accessor starts after the modifier starts or commits after the modifier commits. A method of concurrency control for a database transaction in a distributed database system stores an intended use of a database system resource by the database transaction in a serialization graph. A serialization ordering is asserted between the database transaction and other database transactions based on the intended use of the database system resource by the database transaction. The serialization ordering is then communicated to a node in the distributed database system that needs to know the serialization ordering to perform concurrency control.

  • Patent number: 7146375
Abstract: A system for editing the dimension structure associated with a data cube is revealed. The editing may be used to enforce given criteria on the cube. This includes modifying the cube in order to satisfy regulations requiring researchers to protect information about individuals, such as medical, genealogy and genetics records. The inference control methods disclosed therefore enable safe aggregated datasets to be released to researchers. When combined with information theoretic methods, the invention method of editing the dimension structures may be used to express clearly and discover correlations that exist in the dataset. This mining of the data and editing of the dimension structure allows the user of a simple multidimensional cube viewer to visually verify the patterns discovered.

  • Patent number: 7145710
Abstract: To operate an optical device comprising an SLM with a two-dimensional array of controllable phase-modulating elements groups of individual phase-modulating elements are delineated, and control data selected from a store for each delineated group of phase-modulating elements. The selected control data are used to generate holograms at each group and one or both of the delineation of the groups and the selection of control data is/are varied. In this way upon illumination of the groups by light beams, light beams emergent from the groups are controllable independently of each other.

  • Patent number: 7142811
Abstract: One aspect of the present invention is generally directed towards a system and method of tuning a transducer for transmitting and receiving a wireless signal. In an illustrative embodiment, a single transducer is coupled to a first or second circuit for either transmitting or receiving, respectively. Generally, electrical characteristics of the first circuit are adjusted to increase a magnetic field generated by the transducer. Conversely, electrical characteristics of the second circuit are adjusted to increase a signal generated by the transducer for receiving a magnetic field. Accordingly, a single transducer device can be tuned for either transmitting or receiving a corresponding wireless signal.
