  • Patent number: 6001427
Abstract: A process for powder coating selected portions of a substrate comprises the steps of electrostatically applying a controlled thickness of a powder to an entire surface of a transfer member to form a powder coating thereon, said powder having a gel point, the temperature at which the powder turns into a gel, heating a substrate to a temperature above the gel point of the powder, pressing the heated substrate against the powder coating of the transfer member to melt the powder coating on the transfer member and cause the melted powder to stick to the substrate and coat selected portions of the substrate, and polymerizing and curing the coated portions of the substrate to fix the melted powder to the substrate.

  • Patent number: 5981285
Abstract: A method and apparatuses are disclosed for determining an anticoagulant therapy factor (ATF), a corrected anticoagulant therapy factor (CATF), and a modified anticoagulant therapy factor (MATF), all selectively used for monitoring oral anticoagulant therapy to help prevent excessive bleeding or deleterious blood clots that might otherwise occur before, during or after surgery. The anticoagulant therapy factor (ATF), the corrected anticoagulant therapy factor (CATF), and a modified anticoagulant therapy factor (MATF) are based upon disclosed methods for determining the fibrinogen transformation rate (FTR) which, in turn, is dependent on a maximum acceleration point for fibrinogen (FBG) conversion. The ATF, CATF, and MATF quantities are also based upon the prothrombin time (PT), but have no need for the difficulty to obtain prior art International Normalized Ratio (INR) and International Sensitivity Index (ISI) parameters.

  • Patent number: 5980923
Abstract: Elastomeric sheeting materials are described which are formed from the process of (1) creating a membrane comprising a semi-interpenetrating polymer network ("IPN") of polytetrafluoroethylene ("PTFE") and polydimethylsiloxane ("PDMS") by causing a matrix of PDMS to be formed in situ with a matrix of PTFE; (2) causing a surface of substantially pure PDMS to be formed on at least one side thereof; (3) allowing said PDMS compositions to vulcanize; and (4) converting said structure into useful shapes suitable for application to anatomical areas of the body. The product of the process is suitable for the treatment of dermatologic scars, such as those associated with traumatic or surgical injuries of the skin. The pure PDMS layer provides desired therapeutic effects. The semi-IPN membrane provides improved physical integrity, durability, and elastic behavior in comparison to prior art.

  • Patent number: 5970053
Abstract: A system is disclosed which can measure and control the absolute phase angles of individual coherent Frequency-Division-Multiplexed (FDM) carriers which have been combined to form a composite signal. User-specified phase relationships for the carriers are predetermined to produce an optimum peak factor (peak power to average power ratio) of the composite signal for a given application. In the preferred embodiment, phase relationships chosen to minimize peak factor can dramatically reduce the presence of intermodulation distortion products which can be detrimental to present communication architectures, such as Community Antenna Television (CATV).

  • Patent number: 5951734
Abstract: A semi-convective forced air system for heating glass sheets during a heating cycle. The system has a heating chamber, and a longitudinal conveyor extending lengthwise through the heating chamber. A plurality of longitidinally-extending air manifolds are located within the chamber and are in fluid connection with a compressed air source. The manifolds are arranged in at least one widthwise-extending column. Each of the manifolds are oriented parallel to the length of the conveyor and are constructed and arranged to create a downward flow of heated air toward the conveyor to convectively heat the entire length of selected widthwise portions of a sheet of glass on the conveyor. A controller supplies or restricts the flow of compressed air to selected manifolds within a column at predetermined times during the heating cycle.

Abstract: A coin feed for a souvenir coin elongation machine having a housing, a coin slot formed in the top of the housing, a pair of embossing rolls having a predetermined number (N) of embossing plates spaced equally around the outer circumferential surface of at least one embossing roll, and a gravity fed coin chute connecting the coin slot to the embossing rolls. The coin feed has a coin feed housing and a pair of stops. Each of the stops is movable between a first limit position traversing the coin chute and a second limit position retracted out of said coin chute. Each stop is mechanically linked to said embossing rolls by a cam and a gear train. The mechanical coin feed is located intermediate the coin chute and advancees only one coin at a time to the embossing rolls each time the embossing rolls are rotated 1/N revolutions.

  • Patent number: 5920999
Abstract: A device for aligning multiple shaft segments which are coupled together to form a single rotating shaft. The device has two elongate cylindrical bars each having an annular, axially extending outer surface, one end by which it is rotatable, and the other end which is engagable and disengagable to the other cylindrical bar. One of the bars is inserted into an aperture of one of the shaft segments and the other bar is inserted into the other one of the shaft segments. The engageable and disengagable sections of the bars are arranged such that when the bars are engaged the force of the bar that is rotated is transferred to the other bar and when the rotated bar is rotated from the engaged position the bars are not in contact.
