  • Patent number: 5528970
Abstract: A musical pitch control for each of the strings on a musical instrument. A pivot arm is secured to one end of each string. Controlled current is applied to a length of memory wire secured between the arm and an anchor point. The bending strain on the arm is sensed and circuitry responsive to the sensor is arranged to rock the arm to maintain a desired tension on the string. A second biasing device also acts upon the arm in opposition to the alloy wire to urge the wire alloy to return to its original condition when no current is flowing through the memory wire.

  • Patent number: 5528924
Abstract: An acoustic technique is employed to identify the species of a sample of refrigerant gas and whether it contains significant contaminants. The refrigerant is admitted into a Helmholtz resonator under controlled pressure, and a drive frequency is swept across a frequency band and applied to a first transducer. A second transducer picks up the vibrations in the resonator and the output signal is compared to the drive signal. The resonant peak or center frequencies are identified and the sharpness or quality factors are measured. These measured data are compared with stored data to identify the refrigerant.

A drive motor is mounted above the motor deck while a rear wheel assembly engaged with the motor, is connected to the bottom of the rear motor deck. The mower also includes a front wheel assembly connected to the front end of the vehicle frame. A vehicle body and driver's seat are attached to vehicle frame. A steering column is cooperatively connected at its lower end to the front wheel assembly and includes at its upper end, a steering wheel positioned within reach of the operator seated on the mower. A steering mechanism is linked between the lower end of the steering column and the front wheel assembly. The steering mechanism is positioned above the front wheels of the mower and turns the front wheels asynchronously so that the lawn mower can be driven along an arc path having a radius approximately half the length of the vehicle frame.

  • Patent number: 5524477
Abstract: An acoustic technique is employed to identify the species of a refrigerant gas and whether it contains significant contaminants. Air in the refrigerant can be tolerated, but must be accounted for in determining the acoustic properties of the sample. The refrigerant is admitted into a Helmholtz resonator under a controlled pressure, and a drive frequency is applied to a transducer. Another transducer picks up the vibrations in the resonator and an output signal is compared to the drive signal to find resonant peaks and sharpness factors. The change in resonant frequency with pressure is measured, and is employed to quantify the presence of air in the sample. The amount of air present determines a frequency correction, which permits unambiguous identification of the species of refrigerant and of its purity.

  • Patent number: 5512036
Abstract: An imaging system has an optical assembly that can be removably attached to an elongated housing for insertion therewith into a narrow orifice. The housing has an imager such as a CCD array disposed therein. The housing and the optical assembly are secured together by a bayonet connector that is centered on the distal end of the housing. The housing has a plurality of light guides for transmitting light energy through the distal end of the housing via ports that are radially more distant from the axis of the housing than the outermost surface of the bayonet connector. The optical assembly has passages that align with the light guides of the housing, so that light energy passes from the light guides in the housing through the optical assembly along pathways that are outboard of the bayonet connector. The system can be employed for dental imaging, wherein the housing has an elliptical profile and is dimensioned to fit in the mouth of a patient.

  • Patent number: 5507070
Abstract: A mechanism for controlling the opening and closing of a closure object, comprising an outer cylinder whose inner chamber, contains hydraulic fluid, a distal end of the outer cylinder being attachable to either a closure object or an object to be closed. A circumferential single groove is located in an inner wall of the outer cylinder and a piston shaft telescopically received within the outer cylinder extends proximally therefrom, being attachable to either a closure object or an object to be closed, and distally into the inner chamber. A piston head is mounted distally on the piston shaft. The piston head contains a bore therethrough, a peripherally located circumferential retaining groove, and an inclined outer surface which increases in cross section in the distal direction. A seal prevents hydraulic fluid from passing around the piston head between the distal chamber and the proximal chamber. A snap ring, partially housed within the single groove, engages the inclined outer surface of the piston head.

  • Patent number: 5500730
Abstract: There is presented an apparatus and method of locating a reflective anomaly in an optical fiber. An optical generator is positioned at one end of a light path extending to and from a reflective anomaly in an optical fiber, and periodic pulses of light are injected into the fiber. A bend coupler containing directional optical detectors is clamped to the optical fiber in mid-span, between the optical generator and a reflective anomaly, and light energy is tapped. The coupler is capable of detecting and discriminating light travelling in both longitudinal directions. After signal conditioning and digitization, the light pulses are submitted to a logical network to initiate a timer that measures a time interval between the event of an interrogating light pulse, and its reflection, the result being memorized in a buffer. A microprocessor controls the system, and computes distance between the attached bend coupler and the reflective anomaly as a function of the memorized time interval.
