  • Patent number: 4809480
Abstract: A metal building frame and method for its assembly is disclosed. The building frame includes channel shaped structural members which are utilized for rafters, girders, and vertical columns. The various structural members are joined together by specially designed joining clips which provide structural strength and ease of assembly. Each of the clips includes a channel shape member into which one of the structural members can be inserted and bolted in place. Ridge clips join two of the rafters and are joined together at a preselected angle to define the roofline of the building. A rafter clip is attached to the top of each of the vertical columns and includes and angled portion which is bolted to the outer end of each of the rafters at an angle which is consistent with the preselected angle. The lower end of each vertical column is bolted to a base clip which in turn provides a base member which may be bolted to the floor of the building.

  • Patent number: 4783935
Abstract: This invention relates to a method of constructing a footing and a foundation wall thereon, and form therefore in a hardenable building material for use in a continuous, perimeter type building foundation. An improved shape for the footing and foundation wall is disclosed which allows the use of a novel formwork system, thus permitting both elements to be cast simultaneously in a monolithic arrangement. Additionally, the cast shape of the foundation system is such that the basic function of transmitting superimposed building loads to the earth is an improvement over the more traditional types of foundation systems. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, much of the formwork is expendable and is permanently left in place, being removed only where visable in the finished structure.

  • Patent number: 4777525
Abstract: An electro-optical scanning, display, and storage/retrieval system and method are described for examination of a specimen under a plurality of magnifications. A low resolution image can be provided by moving a specimen past one or more sets of radiation sensitive arrays. Three methods can be employed for providing this low resolution image; (1) by using red, green and blue sensing arrays, (2) by means of RGB filters, and (3) by sequentially illuminating a single array with red, blue and green light. Output signals involving each color component are properly coordinated so as to reconstruct the image of the specimen. Subsequently, the specimen is optically imaged at a multiplicity of higher magnifications generating images which are spatially correlated with the low resolution image. Three methods are described for providig this plurality of magnifications.

  • Patent number: 4766655
Abstract: A pressure sensing device including a single crystal of silicon configured to have a diaphram portion, a frame portion and associated circuitry formed on the crystal is described. Piezo-resistive elements on the boundary of the frame and the diaphram portions of the crystal respond to changes in pressure. The piezo-resistive elements, associated elements, and connecting conducting paths are formed by thin film and/or doping techniques to provide a monolithically integrated circuit. The elements are passive and require only application of input voltages and detection of output signals to provide an operative component. Trimmable resistors are provided for compensation and resistive adjustment, and at least one resistive element provides temperature compensation.

  • Patent number: 4764906
Abstract: A novel device and method are provided herein for the production of underwater sound. This device, termed a plasma jet underwater acoustic source includes a central electrode and a concentric insulator having a longitudinal bore to accommodate the central electrode, the bore being spaced from the central electrode by a longitudinally-extending annular chamber. A plasma cavity is bounded at its upper end by the central electrode, and is in communication with the annular chamber. The cavity is adapted to be connected to a gas supply, so that it may be filled with gas. An outer housing of electrically-conductive material surrounds the insulator and terminates in a centrally-apertured end plate whose central aperture provides an extension to the plasma cavity, the end plate being adapted to be grounded.

  • Patent number: 4757628
Abstract: A trigger fired underwater firearm particularly adapted to defense against sharks is described. The firearm has an elongated tubular handle with a cartridge receiving head at one end, a trigger mechanism in the middle, and a safety mechanism at the other end. A longitudinal shaft extends down the tube and has a firing pin at the end which engages the firing head and a safety pin where the shaft passes through the safety mechanism to the external cocking grip. Pulling back on the cocking grip on the end of the shaft stores energy in a firing spring. The firing mechanism uses a cocking notch in the interior elongated shaft to engage a moveable pawl on the end of a firing lever extending through the tube wall. Depressing the external end of the firing lever releases the pawl from the firing notch allowing the shaft carrying the firing pin to advance under spring pressure to hit the firing pin against the cartridge primer in the head end. The cartridge fires through the open end of the head into the target.

  • Patent number: 4754670
Abstract: An adjustable extension torque bar is provided which may be used to connect a driver member such as a wrench to a driven member such as a socket which engages a nut or bolt. The torque bar has an elongated member which slidably engages a noncircular aperture passing longitudinally along the length of an elongated sleeve. The aperture is noncircular in order to prevent the elongated member from rotating in the sleeve when torque is applied by a wrench which engages one end of the sleeve. The other end of the sleeve engages the elongated member which, in turn, engages the socket. An adjusting screw at one end of the elongated member may be tightened to cause a resilient spacer or a wedge-type member to expand against the inside surfaces of the noncircular aperture and prevent the elongated member from sliding inside the sleeve until sufficient force is applied to overcome frictional forces by pulling or pushing the elongated member with respect to the sleeve.
