  • Patent number: 4538673
Abstract: A system for exchanging thermal energy between a fluid medium and the earth is provided employing a number of boreholes drilled vertically in the earth spaced apart by adjacent intervals. An upflow conduit and a downflow conduit are placed in parallel relationship within the boreholes and connected at their lower ends. At the top of each borehole there is a header providing means to conduct fluid through the conduits in each borehole in a parallel or series arrangement. In each of the headers there is a partition dividing the flow of fluid passing downwardly into the borehole from the flow of fluid passing upwardly out of the borehole with a vent in the partition so that air which might otherwise be trapped in the verical conduits can by vented to prevent airlock of the system.

  • Patent number: 4536177
Abstract: This describes a centrifugal separator for fluid and solid mixtures. The rotating centrifuge assembly includes a structure of two rotating circular cones having transfer veins in which the separation takes place in the veins between the two cones. The cross-sectional area of each such vein increases linearly from the bottom to the top. At the top of the transfer veins there is a dense material transfer vein and a light material transfer vein. One discharge vein is an opening which is slanted backwardly from the motion of the rotating centrifuge assembly to the outside circumference of the centrifuge assembly while the second opening is to the inner vortex of the centrifugal assembly. The inner vortex is connected to a vortex pump which removes the least dense material.

  • Patent number: 4534300
Abstract: In the combustion of waste mineral-bearing liquid streams, an improved type of construction for the combustion chamber, for the combustion of waste mineral-bearing liquid streams which permits continuous removal of solid particulate waste. An annular water channel is fitted inside of the outer shell of the combustion chamber at the bottom. The bottom of the chamber is closed off with a funnel-shaped, inverted conical floor, having a drain outlet at its center. An opening is provided in the side of the combustion chamber just above the bottom, for the exit of downflowing products of combustion. Water is supplied to the annular channel and flows through a longitudinal gap in the inner wall, to fall onto the funnel-shaped floor plate, to wash down all of the particulate matter that collects on the bottom plate, into the drain. Thus, the waste is removed as it is formed.

  • Patent number: 4533424
Abstract: A portable pipe fusion apparatus for attaching plastic side wall fittings e.g. tees, branch saddles to a plastic pipe of selected composition. This apparatus comprises a base plate with means to rigidly clamp the base plate to a pipe main. Two parallel, spaced support rods attached to the base plate at one end, and to a support plate across the other two ends. Movable clamp means guided to slide along the support rods with the axis of movement intersecting the axis of the pipe main. The movable clamp means is adapted to be attached to and hold various of the side wall fittings rigidly, so that the axes of the fittings intersect the axis of the main pipe. Drive screw means held in a quick release split nut means on the support plate, will force the movable clamp in the direction to contact the transverse pipe main. A hydraulic load cell is interposed between the drive screw and the movable clamp with an indicator which continually reads the force being applied between the moving clamp and the pipe main.

  • Patent number: 4533647
Abstract: Novel transformation toughened ceramic compositions comprising finely divided ZrO.sub.2 -HfO.sub.2 solid solution particles dispersed in a Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 -Cr.sub.2 O.sub.3 (alumina) or 3Al.sub.2 O.sub.3.2SiO.sub.2 -3Cr.sub.2 O.sub.3.2SiO.sub.2 (mullite) solid solution matrix phase. It is found that increased hardness and modulus associated with higher relative Cr.sub.2 O.sub.3 content (e.g. 20 mole %) in the matrix phase and increased fracture toughness associated with higher relative HfO.sub.2 content (e.g. 10 to 20 mole %) in the disperse phase represent viable and improved ceramic compositions. Such transformation toughened ceramic compositions are considered useful in superhot light diesel engine applications, high temperature gas turbines and ultrahigh temperature ceramic heat exchangers.
