  • Patent number: 6894122
Abstract: This invention relates to a tire having at least one component (e.g. tread) of a rubber composition comprised of a carbon black and precipitated silica reinforced elastomer blend comprised of a combination of hydroxyl functionalized aqueous emulsion polymerization prepared styrene/butadiene copolymer elastomer (E-SBR) and tin coupled organic solvent solution polymerization prepared styrene/butadiene copolymer elastomer (S-SBR) and/or isoprene/butadiene copolymer elastomer. Preferably, said E-SBR is exclusive of functional groups reactive with alkoxy groups other than said hydroxyl functional groups. A coupling agent as bis(3-triethoxysilylpropyl)polysulfide having an average of from only 2 to 2.6 connecting sulfur atoms in its polysulfidic bridge is used. The invention further relates to an article of manufacture, such as for example a tire, having at least one component of a rubber composition comprised of said elastomer blend.

  • Patent number: 6894103
Abstract: This invention relates to a carbon black modified by a two step process in which carbon black is initially treated with functional monomers by an electropolymerization process to form a functionalized carbon black having an initial polymer attached to, of grafted to, the carbon black following which (A) at least one diene monomer, or (B) living anionic catalysis prepared polymer, is introduced to the functionalized carbon black to continue the polymerization, starting from a living end of the initially formed polymer, and thereby form an extended diene-based polymer. By the addition of the diene monomer or the live anionic polymer to form the associated extended diene-based polymer, it is contemplated that the modified carbon black is rendered more compatible with diene-based elastomers. Such modified carbon black may be used, for example, as reinforcement for component(s) of various articles of manufacture, including tires.

  • Patent number: 6878760
Abstract: The invention relates to a rubber composition which contains starch/plasticizer composite, precipitated silica and carbon black reinforcement together with a coupling agent wherein the coupling agent is an organosilane polysulfide having an average of from about 2 to about 2.6 connecting sulfur atoms in its polysulfidic bridge. The invention provides for a chemical reaction between a coupling agent and silica which is substantially decoupled from a reaction between a coupling agent and starch/plasticizer to form a filler reinforcement network in situ within the elastomer host followed by a subsequent phase mixing of the carbon black therewith. The invention further relates to the resulting rubber composition and articles of manufacture, including tires, having at least one component comprised of said rubber composition.

  • Patent number: 6858665
Abstract: This invention relates to a rubber composition which contains intercalated and at least partially exfoliated organophillic clay reinforcement formed in situ within the elastomer host from a hydrophilic clay. The invention particularly relates to an in situ modification of a hydrophilic clay to compatibilize the clay with a diene-based elastomer. The clay is converted from being hydrophilic in nature to being more hydrophobic in nature and therefore more compatible with the elastomer by bulk blending the elastomer host with a smectite clay, preferably a montmorillonite or hectorite clay, and a hydrocarbyl onium salt, such as for example a quaternary ammonium salt, and particularly in the absence of water addition to the elastomer host.

  • Patent number: 6837287
Abstract: This invention relates to a pneumatic tire with puncture sealing property and a method for preparing such tire. Such tire is prepared by building an uncured butyl rubber-based layer, which contains a peroxide and a dispersion therein of a particulate precured rubber selected from pre resin-cured butyl rubber and/or pre sulfur-cured diene-based elastomer, into an uncured tire and between an innerliner layer and the tire carcass. Upon curing the prepared tire under conditions of elevated temperature, a major portion of the uncured butyl rubber composition is depolymerized to form a tacky material, which contains said dispersion therein of said particulate precured rubber, which has puncture sealant properties. Such layer of depolymerized butyl rubber and dispersed precured rubber particles may be collectively referred to as the sealant layer.

  • Patent number: 6832637
Abstract: The present invention relates to preparation an article of manufacture, such as of a tire, via application of at least one partially pre-cured component. Tires are often prepared with pre-cured, pre-shaped components such as for example, application of pre-cured tread strips to a cured carcass as in the case of re-treaded tires. Thus precured tread and cured carcass are joined together using a cushion gum followed by heating the resulting assembly at an elevated temperature to cure the cushion gum. Such pre-cured component may also be, for example, a sidewall apex. In such cases, the pre-cured component is subjected to more heat than is necessary which may be detrimental for the component. This invention is directed to the use of a partially pre-cured component to prepare a tire assembly prior to the curing of the entire components of the tire assembly.
