  • Patent number: 5731211
Abstract: In a method and apparatus for analyzing a liquid sample, particularly a sample of blood, in different concentrations, a portion of a sample contained in a sample receptacle (P) and diluted to a predetermined concentration is again diluted to a predetermined lower concentration when it is transferred to a receiving vessel (20) in which the sample is analyzed in respect of one or more sample parameters. The transfer is effected by a pipette (17) which in a first position (B) thereof is brought together with the sample receptacle (P) for aspiration of said sample portion and which is then shifted to a second position (A) for dispensing the portion and liquid diluent to the receiving vessel (20).

  • Patent number: 5731671
Abstract: In order to control fans, which are arranged for example in power supplies for cooling the components arranged there, a method and a circuit arrangement are proposed which, on the basis of control pulses which are derived from the input current of the fan, effect the control in such a way that the control pulses are re-shaped into monostable pulses and are fed, via an asymmetrical resistance circuit for charging and discharging, to a storage component whose charge state is a measure for the control of the fan.

  • Patent number: 5732171
Abstract: In a phased-array filter, mutually spatially separated planar waveguides arranged on the surface of a substrate between two substrate edges are optically connected to one another by an optical phase shift in the form of a plurality of strip-type optical waveguides which extend in a bent fashion and are of different optical length. In order to be able to continuously adjust the central wavelength of the filter by varying the location of launching within certain limits, a planar waveguide is arranged directly at the other substrate edge so as to permit direct launching into this planar waveguide.

  • Patent number: 5731935
Abstract: A head positioning device for positioning a magnetic head of a tape drive wherein the positioning device has a base mounted stationary with respect to a tape circulating past the magnetic head. The positioning device further has a magnet assembly extending upward from the base. The magnet assembly is surrounded by a motor coil which receives electrical current to cause the motor coil to move up and down under influence of the magnet assembly. The device also has a magnet housing substantially enclosing the magnet assembly and the motor coil therein. The magnet housing has a vertical slot arranged on the side of the magnet housing opposite the magnetic head for pass through of a coil holder connected to the coil. Vertical force is transmitted from the coil to the coil holder outside of the magnet housing wherein the coil holder is connected to the magnetic head for vertically positioning the head with respect to the base.

  • Patent number: 5730468
Abstract: In a method for dynamic verification of an autograph character string on the basis of a reference autograph character string, the principle of dynamic programming is used for signature verification. Digitized handwriting data as functions of time are first normalized by a standard method. The verification works according to the invention with structural units of the signature, so-called strokes, which result from the writing motions with a raised or, respectively, lowered stylus. The particular concept is to base the dynamic programming on a cost function that combines several handwriting data. The stable structural portions of the signature are more strongly weighted in the method than unstable ones. This leads to a higher verification performance than in standard methods. The method also enables the comparison of signals having different numbers of strokes, so that omissions or additional strokes can be correctly evaluated, by predetermining syntactic rules for their treatment.

  • Patent number: 5730119
Abstract: For preventing a patient from being administered an erroneous anaesthetic, an incorrect concentration of anaesthetic or a mixture of anaesthetics, an anaesthetic system is equipped with a device capable of identifying anaesthetics in the anaesthetic system. A device for simple and reliable identification of anaesthetics does so by having a thermal element which varies the temperature of at least some of the anaesthetic to cause it to undergo a change in physical state, e.g., condensation from the gaseous state to the liquid state. A transition temperature at which the change in physical state occurred is determined and the anaesthetic is identified from the determined transition temperature. The condensation point temperature can be determined by sensing the capacitance between two conductors or sensing changes in the resonant behavior of an oscillating crystal.

  • Patent number: 5732072
Abstract: A communication network has a plurality of mutually connected network nodes in which in each case network data relating to the network topology of the entire communication network are maintained. Depending on the network data, routing tables for connection paths to all remaining network nodes are created. If an event that influences the network topology of the communication network occurs, on the one hand the network data maintained therein are updated by the network node detecting the event. On the other hand, a broadest message corresponding to the event is transmitted to the other network nodes, following the reception of which the respective network nodes update the network data maintained therein.

  • Patent number: 5732388
Abstract: The invention expands a feature extraction unit of a type known in the art with an adaptive channel compensation. The filter coefficients for a high-pass filter for eliminating the chronologically sliding average are set time-dependently with the adaptive channel compensation. As a result, a faster channel adaptation, and a better error compensation in the speech feature extraction are achieved, leading to a more reliable speech recognition. The parameters for the individual function blocks of the feature extraction unit are determined and stored in advance for specific speech transmission channels such as in mobile radio telephone, ISDN and analog speech transmission. The speech recognition with the assistance of the feature extraction unit can subsequently then ensue in channel-associated fashion with the stored parameters values.

  • Patent number: 5728438
Abstract: An improved shrinkable covering made of a shrinkable plastic compound having an inlay of non-recoverable threads and recoverable threads has the recoverable threads arranged with excess length, preferably in helical form, and extending in the stretching and shrinking direction of the covering. As a consequence of this excess length, the recoverable threads are not subjected to any additional stretching during the stretching process of the covering. The recoverable threads act as "swelling agents" in the shrinking process and seal off any longitudinal capillary cavities which may be produced during the production process of the shrinkable covering.
