Patent number: 5843922Abstract: The invention provides a method for preparation of a bifidobacteria-nourishing medium by subjecting a saccharide-based feedstock containing fructosyl units to flash flow conditions. The resulting shearform matrix is then treated to provide a medium having fructosyl-containing oligosaccharide. Preferably, the shearform matrix is treated by subjecting it to acid thermolysis conditions. Also provided is a method of nourishing mammalian alimentary tract for preferential growth of bifidobacteria. In addition, there is provided a medium for nourishing bifidobacteria and comestible products made therefrom.Type: GrantFiled: June 11, 1996Date of Patent: December 1, 1998Assignee: Fuisz Technologies Ltd.Inventors: Roy L. Patent number: 5797997Abstract: A thermophotovoltaic (TPV) system converts thermal or radiant heat into oxygen and electricity for use in a variety of applications. The TPV system and method for efficiently generating-oxygen and electric power through the combustion of fossil fuels with little or no nitrogen oxides or other undesirable combustion by-products. Combustion temperatures are kept at about 1,700.degree. C. or lower while burning a reactant mixture having an air/fuel ratio of greater than about 3:1. Heat from combustion products can be recycled and recuperated without concern for excessive increases in combustion temperature and subsequent combustor/emitter degradation. The generated oxygen may be harvested for commercial use as well as for introduction back into the TPV system. As a by-product of this improved TPV system, we have discovered an inexpensive, environmentally-friendly, and commercially viable method for generating pure oxygen molecules and electricity.Type: GrantFiled: April 30, 1996Date of Patent: August 25, 1998Inventor: Darryl L. Patent number: 5667973Abstract: A method is provided for detecting the interaction between a first test protein and a second test protein, in vivo, using reconstitution of the activity of a transcriptional activator. This reconstitution makes use of chimeric genes which express hybrid proteins. Two types of hybrid proteins are prepared. The first hybrid contains the DNA-binding domain of a transcriptional activator fused to the first test protein. The second hybrid protein contains a transcriptional activation domain fused to the second test protein. If the two test proteins are able to interact, they bring into close proximity the two domains of the transcriptional activator. This proximity is sufficient to cause transcription, which can be detected by the activity of a marker gene which contains a binding site for the DNA-binding domain.Type: GrantFiled: June 7, 1995Date of Patent: September 16, 1997Assignee: The Research Foundation of State University of New YorkInventors: Stanley Fields, Ok-Kyu Song
