Abstract: The invention contemplates remotely operable lifting mechanism for selectively displacing a liquid-level float in a sealed tank, to permit checking of the operational status of the float throughout its displaceable range, and to permit check-out of magnetically operated electrical means actuated by the float at a predetermined float level within its displaceable range. The lifting force is coupled magnetically to the float without interference with the path of float movement and without interference with the magnetically operated electrical means.
Abstract: The lines or stations of a multi-line office telephone system are sequentially examined to detect a hold tone signal of a specified frequency or frequencies on one or more of the lines. The lines are examined for increasingly longer time periods in accordance with the type of energy sensed at each line. If the line is not active or connected in a first brief period, the scanner then proceeds to examine the next line for a hold tone signal. If wide-band energy is not detected on the line in a second, longer period, the examination of the line is terminated and the scan process is continued to the next line. If wide-band energy above a threshold is detected on the line in a third, still longer period, the detected energy is further examined to determine whether this energy includes a valid hold tone signal. If a hold tone signal is detected on a line, the line is scanned again to detect the removal of the hold tone signal therefrom, whereupon a hold status is assigned to the line.

Abstract: A constant voltage circuit comprises an IGFET for deriving an output voltage for a load from a power supply and an inverter circuit responsive to the output voltage for controlling the IGFET in a negative feedback manner to stabilize the output voltage against fluctuations in the supply voltage and the load. The IGFET may be a depletion or an enhancement MOSFET. The inverter circuit preferably comprises an enhancement and a depletion or an enhancement MOSFET. Either a resistor or another IGFET may be connected between the inverter circuit and ground. The constant voltage circuit is readily manufactured as an IC together with an IGFET circuit used as the load.
Abstract: The invention contemplates pressure-fluid operated control connections, auxiliary to a trailer-hitch connection, for providing a selected one of a plurality of functions primarily to aid in making a hitched connection between a trailer and a towing vehicle. The invention also provides selective availability of safety aids for back-up maneuvering of the hitched trailer, and anti-sway coupling for the safe trailing of hitched vehicles on the highway. Various embodiments are described.
Abstract: Improved door activating motor control apparatus employs a self latching safety edge relay which is selectively energized by any of "open", one-button universal or obstruction-sensing safety edge contacts. A motor controlling contactor switch has its "open" direction coil and contact portion operated by safety edge relay contacts, and its "close" relay portion operated under control of a "close" or the one-button switch. The composite control apparatus of the instant invention exhibits significant operational advantages over prior art structures including, inter alia, frequency exercise of safety edge relay contacts, responsiveness to the "open" switch in an emergency situation, and retention of an obstruction sensing signal to cause door opening.
Abstract: A semiconductor solar cell capable of converting incident radiation to electrical energy at high efficiency includes a plurality of series-connected unit solar cells formed on a common wafer of semiconductor material. The unit solar cells each include a semiconductor substrate of one conductivity type and a p-n junction formed in the substrate. The light-receiving surface of the cell may have an opaque member thereon, and incident light may be directed onto the portion of that surface not covered by the opaque member. Various embodiments and methods illustrate the invention.
Abstract: A memory circuit arrangement employing one-transistor-per-bit memory cells in which differential sense amplifiers are utilized for detecting the state of the stored bits. First and second digit lines are arranged substantially parallel to and adjacent to each other and first and second parallel word lines are arranged substantially at right angles to the digit lines. Memory cells are connected at each cross point between the digit lines and the word lines.
Abstract: A mechanism for conversion between rotary and linear motion includes a rotatable roller carriage having a channel through which a shaft is passed axially. Shaft engaging drive rollers that are orbitally movable about the channel with the rotation of the roller carriage are positioned along the channel forming an acute angle therewith. Retaining rollers are held by the roller carriage parallel to the drive rollers to retain the drive rollers in a shaft engaging position. The drive rollers are driven by the retaining rollers in a rotary fashion to linearly advance the shaft.

Abstract: The invention contemplates elastomeric-seal application to the so-called plain-spherical variety of self-aligning bearing wherein the outer ring is the product of a swaging operation which causes it to conform its cylindrical bore to a spherical surface at sliding interface with the spherical convex outer surface of an inner-bearing member. Specifically, in the machining of the swaged ring to its ultimate O.D. and other specified dimensions, a deformable axially extending lip is created, in conjunction with an undercut counterbore, at the axial end to be sealed; an elastomeric O-ring is fitted to the counterbore, and the lip is coined-over into retaining and preloading relation with the O-ring.
Abstract: An improved solar cell designed for optimum efficiency is comprised of a plurality of series connected unit solar cells formed from a common substrate of semiconductor material. Each unit solar cell has spaced elongate sidewalls, and a "dead space" area between adjoining sidewalls of adjacent units is made substantially smaller than an active, light receiving area, extending between the opposite sidewalls of each individual unit. In addition, the width of the active area is concisely limited to ensure that radiation incident on the active area is incident at a point which is spaced from the p-n junction of each unit by no more than a predetermined optimum distance. Reducing the "dead space" area while concisely limiting the width of the active area provides improved solar cell performance without requiring focusing lenses.
