Abstract: The invention contemplates a periscope mirror system wherein viewing on a selected one of two 180.degree.-opposed viewing axes is provided to a single exit-mirror for directing exit light in the same direction regardless of the selected viewing axis. The entrance mirror and the exit mirror are angularly positionable on parallel pivot axes which for a first direction of viewing involve direct reflection from the entrance mirror to the exit mirror, and which for the opposite direction of viewing involve indirect reflection from the entrance mirror to the exit mirror via an intermediate image-erecting third mirror.
Abstract: A method is provided for producing a fine granular concentrate of fire-retarding, foam-forming solids for addition to host material including plastics, paints, coating compositions and the like by mixing particles of solid fire-retarding additives of particle size less than about 5.mu.m with a polymeric material wherein the particles are surrounded and coated by said polymeric material, said polymeric material being compatible with or the same as the host material to which the coated particles are subsequently added to confer fire-retarding and foam-forming properties thereto. The steps include drying said polymeric-particle mixture, comminuting said polymeric-particle mixture to a granular product of less than about 50.mu.m, and repeating the coating procedure at least one more time on said granular product by mixing said granular product with polymeric material, followed by drying and comminuting said granular-polymeric mixture to provide a granular concentrate having a size of less than about 50.mu.

Abstract: On disposing of an acidic aqueous waste including ferrous ions, the ferrous ions are oxidized to produce iron compound precipitate in a remaining waste liquid. With the temperature of the waste kept between 50.degree. C and 75.degree. C and with pH of the waste liquid adjusted between 3.5 and 5.2, fine particles of the iron compound otherwise produced agglomerate into large polycrystalline particles. The large particles are readily separated from the waste liquid, which is now substantially neutral and transparent.
Abstract: An improved lens implant for use in ophthalmological surgery, the lens being a replacement for a cataract-clouded natural lens, and the replacement being installed in the pupil at the iris as the operative step following removal of the cataracted lens. The invention features unitary adapter structure assembled to an intra-ocular lens element and having integrally formed first and second pluralities of radially outward stabilizing feet, in angularly spaced and interlaced relation, with the feet of the other plurality; and the respective pluralities of stabilizing feet are installed on opposite sides of the iris, thus enabling the iris to retain and position the implanted lens.

Abstract: A frequency discriminator circuit suitable for fabrication in a semiconductor integrated circuit has an input terminal connected to an input amplifier for producing two signals of opposite phase which are, respectively, applied to the base electrodes of two common-collector connected transistors. One of the two signals is also applied through a phase shifter to the emitters of both transistors. An output differential amplifier has its inputs connected, respectively, to the emitters of the two transistors to produce a frequency-discriminated output signal.
Abstract: Sintered articles characterized by a surface of revolution, such as truncated spherical balls and spherical ball valves, e.g., plain spherical bearing balls, are provided made by the powder metal compaction and sintering of blanks followed, in the case of ball elements, by densification of the outer spherical surface by mechanical working, such as by roll-forming, the balls so produced being characterized by improved sphericity and dimensional tolerance and improved wear resistance combined with optimum resistance to corrosion. The spherical surface of the ball is substantially free of pores, has a work hardened structure and has a density at and adjacent the surface of at least about 95% of the theoretical density of the metal, the density substantially below the surface being less and ranging to as low as at least about 70% of theoretical density.
Abstract: An attenuation equalizer, having a constant resistance is comprised of a distributed constant line having a given impedance and electrical length connected to both the input and output terminals of the equalizer, and an additional constant line having a given impedance and electrical length connected to the input and output terminals through resistors of a given resistance.

The protection device includes a gate-controlled diode having a breakdown voltage that is less than the breakdown voltage of the drain of the field effect transistor.
Abstract: A speed convertor for providing a variable drive ratio, comprises a first rotary body having a toothed rim, and a second rotary body carrying a plurality of unidirectional drive transmitting members, for exaple pawls or free wheel devices, which co-operate with the rim. Abstract: This invention provides an improved book and book cover, and apparatus for making book covers from laminated plastic material where one layer of the laminate is of sufficient stiffness for the front and rear panels of the book cover; and the other layer has good characteristics for hinges for the cover. Both layers are preferably coextruded to make a composite plastic sheet. The apparatus displaces material from the first layer down to the second layer to provide a groove over the hinge layer; and the apparatus is adjustable to make covers for books of different size and thickness. The covers have one layer that heats when exposed to a dielectric field of a predetermined frequency; and the hinge layer undergoes no consequential heating by the dielectric field that heats the first layer.

Abstract: The invention contemplates a disposable, self-contained, battery-operated cautery featuring a finger-grasping end which is of substantially reduced diameter as compared with the battery-containing body portion of the device. Such reduced finger-grasping proportions enable facile and precise manipulation of a cauterizing tip, and a switch actuator carried at the finger-grasping end further facilitates manipulation. The switch actuator is of such low profile as to be fully encased and protected when a protective cover is telescopically assembled over the tip end of the cautery.
Abstract: This invention provides a novel process of handling fluids which increase heat transfer efficiency in all types of heat transmission equipment. This process is applicable both to single and multiple units; in both cases, heat transfer is enhanced and steam consumption reduced.Basically, the process consists in extracting, along with the condensate, some of the steam from inside of a steam heated unit, separating this steam from the condensate and noncondensable gases, before and after feeding this extraction steam to another units working at a lower pressure.
