Abstract: The invention contemplates controlled ablation of the cornea, using ultraviolet laser radiation, wherein irradiated flux density and exposure time are so controlled as to achieve desired depth of the ablation. Sculpturing action results from precharacterized distribution of flux density across the cross-section of laser-beam projection, in the context of beam size, at cornea incidence, to match the area to be ablated, and the duration of exposure determines the extent of curvature change. Illustrative techniques and situations are disclosed, for myopia correction, for hyperopia correction, and for astigmatism correction.
Abstract: A compound of formula (I) useful for treating dementia or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof: ##STR1## in which one of X and Y represents hydrogen and the other represents Z, where Z is a group in which Q represents a 3-membered divalent residue completing a 5-membered aromatic ring and comprises two or three nitrogen atoms, any amino nitrogen being substituted by a C.sub.1-2 alkyl, cyclopropyl or propargyl group, r represents the integer of 2 or 3, s represents an integer of 1 or 2 and t represents 0, with the proviso that when Y is hydrogen s is 1.
Abstract: This invention relates to a process for thermodynamically treating a region joining two members. In accordance with one aspect of the present invention, are the steps of heating the region to a first temperature generally within a range of 750.degree. F. and 850.degree. F. so as to diffuse a strengthening material in the region into a heat affected zone between the members; maintaining the first temperature for a first selected time within a range of 3 to 20 hours so as to raise the percentage of strengthening material diffusing into the heat affected zone; heating the region to a second temperature generally within a range of 900.degree. F. to 1000.degree. F. so as to initiate hardening of the heat affected zone; maintaining the second temperature for a second selected time generally within a range of 0.5 to 5 hours so as to harden the heat affected zone with minimal decrease in hardening of regions outside the heat affected zone; and cooling the region to room temperature.

Abstract: The invention contemplates an improved strap or bandage mounting of a socket element for removably engaged coupling of an ultrasonic transducer element to an afflicted limb. In a preferred embodiment, a radially flanged annular socket element is formed with outward lugs at axial offset from the flange, for preliminary assembly to a length of bandage material which has been cut to provide an opening for registration with the bore of the socket element, with the flange surrounding the opening and against one side of the bandage, while the outward lugs engage the other side of the bandage and also assure the desired registration.
Abstract: Novel compounds of formula (I) and salts, solvates and hydrates thereof, processes for their preparation and their use in the treatment of conditions in which degradation of connective tissue and other proteinaceous components of the body occurs: ##STR1## in which, R is hydrogen, C.sub.1-6 alkyl or optionally substituted benzyl; R.sub.1 is hydrogen or C.sub.1-6 alkyl; R.sub.2 is C.sub.3-6 alkyl; R.sub.3 is hydrogen, alkyl, --CH.sub.2 --Z where Z is optionally substituted phenyl or heteroaryl, or R.sub.3 is a group ##STR2## where R.sub.7 is hydrogen, alkyl or --CH.sub.2 --Ph where Ph is optionally substituted phenyl and R.sub.8 is hydrogen or alkyl; and R.sub.4 is --CH.sub.2 --(CH.sub.2).sub.n OR.sub.5 or --CH.sub.2 --(CH.sub.2).sub.n OCOR.sub.6 or --CH(R.sub.9)COR.sub.10, where n is an integer from 1 to 6; R.sub.5, R.sub.6 and R.sub.9 are hydrogen or C.sub.1-6 alkyl; and R.sub.10 is hydroxy or --O--C.sub.1-6 alkyl or --NR.sub.5 R.sub.6 (where R.sub.5 and R.sub.

Abstract: An improved and process for creating a lining in a bore transfers strip wrapped in overlapping spiral fashion about a mandrel to the bore wall such that the edge-to-edge relation of the spirally-wrapped strip is maintained from the mandrel to the bore wall. Adhesive is applied to the strip surface during wrapping thereof on the mandrel. The invention provides a new bore with a thin, strong, corrosion resistant lining over a preselected portion of its length that is substantially pressure tight internally and externally and leak proof thus permitting substantial reuse of the lined bore.
Abstract: The apparatus is used for forming a diamond shape on ornamental chains (C) of variable width, and comprises a support having a slide guide flange (1A) with an intermediate gap (3) for the space required for the diamond-shaping tool (5), a shoe for lateral pressure against the support and, to serve as guide means acting along the edge (B1) of the chain opposite the edge (B) to be given a diamond shape, two pressers (14) acting independently on said edge (B1) adjacently to said gap (3).

Abstract: A precision slit of adjustable width in which each slit jaw is guided via at least two guide parallelograms lying opposite each other and in which a single setting member acting jointly on the guide parallelograms of one side and displaceable perpendicular to the direction of movement of the slit jaws is provided for the setting of slit width. In a preferred embodiment, the guide parallelograms are developed as spring parallelograms, an embodiment prepared monolithically from a plate of compliant material and having particular advantages.
Abstract: In a continuous casting plant for slabs with a consecutively arranged rolling mill, a furnace is provided between a strand separating device arranged at a run-out roller table of the continuous casting plant and the rolling mill. The furnace has a feed side, a delivery side and a transverse conveying device for conveying a slab from a longitudinal conveying device arranged on the feed side to a longitudinal conveying device arranged on the delivery side and including a slab storage place located parallel to the longitudinal conveying device. In order to enable the compact construction of the furnace and simple installations within the furnace, at least one fixed hearth having a minimum width adapted to a slab width is provided within the furnace parallel to the longitudinal conveying device.
Abstract: A data processing pension plan monitor is directed specifically to the management and controlled access of pension-backed credit. This system permits pension plan participants to establish a line of credit (LOC), based on their vested interest in a sponsored pension plan. This LOC is thereafter systematically applied to a plurality of accounts, each permitted selected credit card and/or check writing privileges. The present invention balances credit access with long term pension requirements. The charges associated with the credit accessed are paid back to the pensioner, thereby retaining certain tax deferred privileges while permitting access to the accumulated funds.
