  • Patent number: 8285318
Abstract: Method and apparatus for adjusting the transmission power of base stations in simultaneous communication with a mobile station. The methods described provide for the transmission power of the base stations to be aligned. In the first exemplary embodiment, the transmitters are attached to a separate control unit through communication links. The control unit then derives the most likely command stream and send that to the base stations. In the second exemplary embodiment, the control unit periodically receives the final or average transmit level in a period and an aggregate quality measure for the feedback during a period from each of the transmitters. The control unit determines the aligned power level and transmits a message indicative of the aligned power level to the transmitters.

  • Patent number: 8200856
Abstract: Techniques for performing flow control in Universal Serial Bus (USB) are described. In one design, a USB host sends token packets to a USB device to initiate data exchanges with the USB device. The USB device determines that it is incapable of exchanging data with the USB host, e.g., because there is no data to send or because its buffer is full or near full. The USB device then sends a “flow off” notification to the USB host to suspend data exchanges. The USB host receives the flow off notification and suspends sending token packets to the USB device. Thereafter, the USB device determines that it is capable of exchanging data with the USB host. The USB device then sends a “flow on” notification to the USB host to resume data exchanges. The USB host receives the flow on notification and resumes sending token packets to the USB device.

  • Patent number: 8149896
Abstract: Techniques for suppressing spurs in a receiver are described. A processor (e.g., within a wireless device) receives digital samples for a desired signal having a spur located within the bandwidth of the desired signal. A spur is an undesired signal that may be generated internally at the receiver or may come from an external interfering source. The processor filters the digital samples to suppress the spur and provides output samples having the spur suppressed. The processor may detect for the spur, e.g., by performing an FFT on the digital samples and examining the spectral response. The processor may filter the digital samples with a notch filter having an adjustable notch frequency and/or an adjustable notch bandwidth. For example, the notch frequency may be set based on the frequency of the spur, and the notch bandwidth may be set based on the amplitude of the spur.

  • Patent number: 8000302
Abstract: An adaptive multi-channel (AMC) modem that can receive one or multiple spread spectrum signals simultaneously includes an adjustable filter, a ?? ADC, and a digital processor. The adjustable filter filters an input signal with an adjustable bandwidth and provides an output signal comprised of a selected number of spread spectrum signals. The ?? ADC digitizes the output signal and provides data samples. The sampling rate and/or the reference voltage of the ?? ADC may be varied to obtain the desired performance. The digital processor processes the data samples for each spread spectrum signal to recover data sent in that signal. A controller ascertains the operating conditions (e.g., the desired signal level, the undesired signal level, and so on) and selects the number of spread spectrum signals to receive based on the operating conditions, user requirements, and possibly other factors.

  • Patent number: 7966359
Abstract: A Frequency discriminator based on a combination of Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) operator and half-bin DFT operator, corresponding to a set of Twiddle factors with frequency double than the sampling frequency. The frequency estimators are so chosen as not to have any zero or discontinuity point. Therefore the discriminator of embodiments of invention is more stable and well-behaved in an extended operating range. The discriminator of the invention, when applied to a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver, allows a safer lock to the carrier frequency, even in presence of a large initial error, and avoids the problem of false locks.

  • Patent number: 7920598
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided that facilitate generation and detection of synchronization channels in a wireless communication system. A one-to-one relationship is established among a set of scrambling codes (SCs) and a set of primary synchronization channel (P-SCH) sequences which are determined by a reusable sector identifier that is determined through detection of the P-SCH channel. The set of scrambling codes are utilized to (i) scramble a secondary synchronization channel sequence which facilitates detection of the S-SCH sequence once the reusable sector identifier is detected, or (ii) compose an unscrambled S-SCH sequence through a sequential or interleaved concatenation of SCs wherein a concatenation indication is received in a mobile terminal. Cyclic shifts and sign-flip operations applied to a base sequence are employed to generate SCs. A lookup table and a library of SCs facilitate scrambling code determination in a mobile terminal that receives associated P-SCH and S-SCH sequences.

  • Patent number: 7916803
Abstract: A modified preamble is used by extended devices that operate at higher rates, MIMO or other extensions relative to strict 802.11a-compliant devices. The extended devices might use multiple antenna techniques (MIMO), where multiple data streams are multiplexed spatially and/or multi-channel techniques, where an extended transmitter transmits using more than one 802.11a channel at a time. Such extensions to IEEE 802.11a can exist in extended devices. The modified preamble is usable for signaling, to legacy devices as well as extended devices, to indicate capabilities and to cause legacy devices or extended devices to defer to other devices such that the common communication channel is not subject to unnecessary interference. The modified preamble is also usable for obtaining MIMO channel estimates and/or multi-channel estimates.

  • Patent number: 7907972
Abstract: Techniques to schedule downlink data transmission to a number of terminals in a wireless communication system. In one method, one or more sets of terminals are formed for possible data transmission, with each set including a unique combination of one or more terminals and corresponding to a hypothesis to be evaluated. One or more sub-hypotheses may further be formed for each hypothesis, with each sub-hypothesis corresponding to specific assignments of a number of transmit antennas to the one or more terminals in the hypothesis. The performance of each sub-hypothesis is then evaluated, and one of the evaluated sub-hypotheses is selected based on their performance. The terminal(s) in the selected sub-hypothesis are then scheduled for data transmission, and data is thereafter coded, modulated, and transmitted to each scheduled terminal from one or more transmit antennas assigned to the terminal.

  • Patent number: 7852971
Abstract: Techniques for detecting acquisition of a false channel in a wireless communication system are described. For false channel detection, a peak corresponding to a signal from a base station is initially detected. Frequency acquisition and time tracking of the peak are then performed. The frequency acquisition attempts to determine and correct downconversion frequency error. The time tracking attempts to follow the peak as it moves due to sample timing error and/or changes in channel conditions. Whether the signal is from a desired frequency channel or a false frequency channel is determined based on the time tracking. If a false channel is acquired, then the sampling timing will be either too slow or too fast, and the peak will move at a fast rate. A false channel may be detected based on the movement of the peak.

  • Patent number: 7809087
Abstract: A wireless communication device may include a receiver coupled to a modem. The receiver may receive a wireless packet according to a wireless networking protocol such as a protocol in the IEEE 802.11 family of wireless protocols. Upon receiving a packet, the receiver may processes the packet according to a selected one of a plurality of discrete gain states. The modem coupled to the receiver may select the gain state used to process the packet such as by sending one or more signals to the receiver to reduce the gain state after determining that the current gain state is too large. The modem may implement a plurality of power detection modules in order to detect signals at varying power levels. The implementation of a plurality of power detectors may allow the gain state selection process to be performed very quickly as required by some wireless networking protocols.

  • Patent number: 7746970
Abstract: Techniques for filtering noisy estimates to reduce estimation errors are described. A sequence of input values (e.g., for an initial channel impulse response estimate (CIRE)) is filtered with an infinite impulse response (IIR) filter having at least one coefficient to obtain a sequence of output values (e.g., for a filtered CIRE). The coefficient(s) are updated based on the sequence of input values with an adaptive filter, a bank of prediction filters, or a normalized variation technique. To update the coefficient(s) with the adaptive filter, a sequence of predicted values is derived based on the sequence of input values. Prediction errors between the sequence of predicted values and the sequence of input values are determined and filtered to obtain filtered prediction errors. The coefficient(s) of the IIR filter are then updated based on the prediction errors and the filtered prediction errors.

  • Patent number: 7656731
Abstract: A memory includes a global read line and a plurality of banks. For each bank, the memory includes a sense amplifier. A discharge circuit discharges the global read line if any one of a plurality of the sense amplifiers is enabled and is outputting a signal having a first digital logic value onto an input lead of the discharge circuit. In this way, the sense amplifiers share the discharge circuit. In one example, the memory includes a pair of differential read lines that are precharged to begin a read operation. After precharging, if either of two sense amplifiers is enabled and outputting the first digital logic value, then a first discharge circuit discharges a first of the global read lines. If either of two sense amplifiers is enabled and outputting the second digital logic value, then a second discharge circuit discharges a second of the global read lines.
