Patent number: 7457319Abstract: A method is provided for partitioning data into packets, where each packet has a type k selected from a set of packet types, and a length Lk, in bytes, of payload data. The method includes steps of: determining an expected successful transmit time Ek, for packets of type k, for each of the set of packet types; choosing an optimum packet type for which the value Ek/Lk is a minimum; and partitioning the payload data into packets of the optimum packet type. The method is enhanced by computing a bit error rate (BER) from the retransmission rate for single packet type and using the BER to compute retransmission rates for packets of the remaining types. The method is further enhanced by computing transition tables in advance and using the transition tables to select an optimum packet type.Type: GrantFiled: November 15, 2002Date of Patent: November 25, 2008Assignee: QUALCOMM, IncorporatedInventors: Thejaswi Bharadwaj Madapushi, Andrew Sendonaris

Patent number: 7417957Abstract: A method and an apparatus for rate control in a high data rate (HDR) communication system are disclosed. An exemplary HDR communication system defines a set of data rates, at which an access point (AP) may send data packets to an access terminal (AT). The data rate is selected to maintain targeted packet error rate (PER). The AT's open loop algorithm measures received signal to interference and noise ratio (SINR) at regular intervals, and uses the information to predict an average SINR over the next packet duration. The AT's closed loop algorithm measures a packet error rate (PER) of the received signal, and uses the PER to calculate a closed loop correction factor. The loop correction factor is added to the SINR value predicted by the open loop, resulting in an adjusted SINR.Type: GrantFiled: March 24, 2004Date of Patent: August 26, 2008Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: Nagabhushana T. Patent number: 7411974Abstract: Reverse Link (RL) data rate allocation in a High Data Rate (such as 1xEV-DO) system as a function of Forward Link (FL) channel quality. Rate shaping of a throughput profile for multiple Access Terminals (ATs) is performed by adjusting transition probabilities associated with a data rate allocation algorithm. The RL maximum data rate per AT is adjusted to reduce the loading in a designated area and result in rate shaping of the cell and/or sector. In one embodiment, the maximum data rates are adjusted as a function of the FL Signal to Interference and Noise Ratio (SINR), such as measured per serving sector or as a captured sum total of FL SINR. In still another embodiment, the maximum data rates are adjusted as a function of differences in rise-over-thermal values between neighboring sectors.Type: GrantFiled: November 14, 2002Date of Patent: August 12, 2008Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: Rashid A. Attar, Christopher G. Lott

Patent number: 7379522Abstract: Within a mobile communication device (for example, a cellular telephone), there is a local oscillator. The local oscillator includes a novel frequency divider that includes a novel configurable multi-modulus divider (CMMD). The frequency divider is configurable into a selectable one of multiple configurations involving different mixes of synchronous and asynchronous circuitry. In each configuration, the frequency divider produces an amount of noise and consumes an amount of power. Power consumption is loosely inversely related to noise produced in that the modes with the highest power consumption produce the least amount of noise, and vice versa. The mobile communication device is operable in one of multiple different communication standards (for example, GSM, CDMA1X and WCDMA). The different communication standards impose different noise requirements on the frequency divider.Type: GrantFiled: June 21, 2006Date of Patent: May 27, 2008Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: Chiewcharn Narathong, Wenjun Su

Patent number: 7369815Abstract: An integrated circuit for a modem processor includes processing units that are partitioned into “always-on” and “collapsible” power domains. An always-on power domain is powered on at all times. A collapsible power domain can be powered off if the processing units in the power domain are not needed. A power control unit within an always-on power domain powers down the collapsible power domains after going into sleep and powers up these domains after waking up from sleep. Tasks for powering down the collapsible power domains may include (1) saving pertinent hardware registers for these power domains, (2) freezing output pins of the IC to minimally disturb external units, (3) clamping input pins of the collapsed power domains, (4) powering down a main oscillator and disabling the oscillator clock, and so on. Complementary tasks are performed for powering up the collapsed power domains.Type: GrantFiled: February 24, 2004Date of Patent: May 6, 2008Assignee: Qualcomm IncorporatedInventors: Inyup Kang, Karthikeyan Ethirajan

Patent number: 7342894Abstract: A system and method for transparent Mobile IP registration within PPP negotiation uses a mobile telephone to relay messages between terminal equipment and a Foreign Agent (FA). An IPCP configuration request message by the terminal equipment requesting the assignment of an IP address is modified by the mobile telephone to delete the IP address request option. Other configuration options are forwarded unchanged by the mobile telephone to the peer/network. The peer/network responds with an acknowledgement of the requested configuration options and flow control between the terminal and the MT is asserted to permit Mobile IP registration. In the course of Mobile IP registration, and IP address is assigned to the mobile unit by the FA. Upon completion of the Mobile IP registration, flow control between the mobile telephone and the terminal is deasserted and the IP address assigned during Mobile IP registration is provided to the terminal equipment.Type: GrantFiled: January 21, 2003Date of Patent: March 11, 2008Assignee: Qualcomm IncorporatedInventors: Nischal Abrol, Jeffrey Dyck, Marcello Lioy

Patent number: 7342952Abstract: Improved decision directed adaptation and decision feedback equalizers are provided in a block coded digital communication system. The performance of a receiver is significantly improved by allowing the decision feedback equalizer to perform time-tracking and residual frequency offset compensation during the data portion of a frame. This is accomplished by capitalizing on the inherent correlation among the chips of a code word in a block coded digital communication system to identify certain instances where more reliable symbol estimates can be derived from a sliced chip without introduction the delay inherent in decoding. As the more reliable symbol estimates are fed back into the chip slicer, the total efficiency of the decision feedback equalizer is improved and the more reliable symbol estimates can be used to replace older content in the feedback filter to further improve the accuracy of the modified slicer input and further decrease the effects of error propagation by the decision feedback equalizer.Type: GrantFiled: June 24, 2003Date of Patent: March 11, 2008Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: John E. Patent number: 6593826Abstract: An RF Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO) design having improved power supply noise immunity. More particularly, a VCO resonant circuit that provides a high circuit Q, immunity to noise, and is tunable over multiple distinct bands. The resonant circuit is implemented in conjunction with an integrated circuit oscillator that requires a tuned circuit to determine the frequency of operation. When the integrated circuit oscillator is used as a Local Oscillator (LO) within a wireless phone it is subjected to numerous sources of power supply noise. In a Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) wireless phone system the power supply to portions of the RF transmit path are cycled on and off depending on the transmitted data rate. The present invention provides an oscillator with increased immunity to the noise induced on the power supply due to power supply cycling.Type: GrantFiled: May 7, 2001Date of Patent: July 15, 2003Assignee: Qualcomm, INCInventor: Puay Hoe See

Patent number: 6539242Abstract: A method of and an apparatus for reducing the average power consumption in a remote unit in a wireless communication system. When a remote unit in a slotted mode communication system enters an active state, it receives a sequence of messages. One element of this sequence is a general paging message that command the remote unit to return to the inactive state immediately, thus conserving battery power. The general paging message is followed by several additional elements in the sequence. When the remote unit operates in a poor signal-to-noise ratio environment, for example, it may not receive the general paging message and may, thus, unnecessarily remain in the active state until the end of its assigned slot, wasting battery power. The invention determines whether the element received by the remote unit is a general paging message. If so, the remote unit enters the inactive mode. If not, the invention determines whether the element occurs after a general paging message in the sequence of messages.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 2000Date of Patent: March 25, 2003Assignee: Qualcomm IncorporatedInventor: Gwain Bayley

Patent number: 6453181Abstract: A method and apparatus is described for tracking the length of a sleep period within a mobile station using a sleep clock to precisely calibrate portions of the sleep period. The sleep period subdivided into a sequence of sub-periods each of known duration wherein the durations of the sub-periods are not necessarily integer multiples of cycles of the sleep clock. Elapsed time is tracked within each individual sub-period of the sleep period using an integer sleep counter which tracks whole cycles of the sleep clock. Then any remaining fractional portions of the cycles of the sleep mode clock not accounted for by the integer sleep counter are tracked using a fractional sleep counter. The fractional sleep counter accumulates remaining fractional portions of sleep mode cycles from one sub-period to the next. A method and apparatus is also described for estimating frequency drift with a sleep clock signal used during a slotted paging mode of operation of a wireless mobile station.Type: GrantFiled: November 4, 1999Date of Patent: September 17, 2002Assignee: Qualcomm, IncorporatedInventors: Raghu Challa, Ihab Barghouti, Dung Nguyen

Patent number: 6389067Abstract: A Wireless Code Division Multiple Access method and apparatus for determining the transmitted rate of a voice/data signal from a mobile station to a Base Station. Variable rate vocoders transmit voice at one of several predetermined frame rates. The receiver determines the transmitted rate based on one of several frame parameters. One of the parameters is received frame energy. The received frame energy is measured over the length of the relevant portion of the frame. Energy is measured over the half of the frame that can only contain energy if a full rate frame is sent. If the energy measured exceeds a threshold, then full rate is indicated. Else, energy is measured over the fourth of a frame that can only contain energy if a half rate frame is sent. If the energy exceeds a threshold, then half rate is indicated. The procedure is repeated for quarter and eighth rates.Type: GrantFiled: June 10, 1999Date of Patent: May 14, 2002Assignee: Qualcomm, Inc.Inventors: Christopher C. Riddle, Jeffrey A. Levin
