  • Patent number: 6863239
Abstract: A fluid conduit is provided for use in a hydraulic actuating system for controlling an instrumentality disposed on a rotating portion of a machine. The fluid conduit transports pressurized fluid between a fluid source disposed on a non-rotating portion of the machine and the instrumentality and comprises a rigid tubular member formed in the shape of a helix having at least about 2 revolutions and a non-constant pitch length. The ends of the tube are adapted to be sealingly connected between the fluid source and the instrumentality. The fluid conduit is used, for example, in an apparatus and system for controlling a hydraulic actuator mounted on a rotating blade.

  • Patent number: 6860936
Abstract: A method is disclosed for constructing, verifying, and maintaining underground vaults that isolate and contain radioactive burial sites. The method employs a buoyant lift technique to isolate a block of soil containing the contaminates from the surrounding soil. An impermeable synthetic liner is embedded in the vault to enhance the integrity of the system. The integrity of the vault is monitored by a system of sensors placed both inside and outside of the sealed vault. The method eliminates the need to excavate or drill in the contaminated areas.

  • Patent number: 6861394
Abstract: A wellbore fluid including a peroxide degradable polymer and an encapsulated peroxide source. The peroxide degradable polymer may be a polysaccharide. The peroxide source may include an inorganic peroxide, including zinc and alkaline earth metal peroxides, such as magnesium peroxide. The encapsulating material may be a polymer, including enteric polymers. The release of peroxide, from peroxide sources generally, can be controlled by means of pH such that peroxide source can be activated, and peroxide released, by a change in pH. In a wellbore, this pH change can be effected by using produced fluids to lower the pH of a more basic wellbore fluid.

  • Patent number: 6857485
Abstract: A water-base drilling fluid for use in drilling wells through a formation containing a shale which swells in the presence of water. The drilling fluid preferably includes: an aqueous based continuous phase, a weight material, and a shale hydration inhibition agent having the formula: H2N—R—{OR?}x—Y.[H+B?]d in which R and R? are alkylene groups having 1 to 6 carbon atom and x is a value from about 1 to about 25. The Y group should be an amine or alkoxy group, preferably a primary amine or a methoxy group. The acid H+B? is a protic acid selected from the group consisting of inorganic acids and organic acids, illustrative examples of which include: hydrochloric, hydrobromic, sulfuric, phosphoric, nitric, boric, perchloric, formic, acetic, halogenated acetic, propionic, butyric, maleic, fumeric, glycolic, lactic, citric and combinations of these. The shale hydration inhibition agent should be present in sufficient concentration to reduce the swelling of the shale.

  • Patent number: 6858309
Abstract: The present invention provides improved methods for conducting living/controlled polymerization on polymeric solid supports. The improved methods allow polymerization to occur directly from the non-functionalized surface of a bulk support. In addition, polymerization may be re-initiated to provide co-polymers. The disclosed methods may employ the non-nitroxide-based RAFT and ATRP control agents that allow controlled polymerization to proceed at relatively low temperatures (<80° C.). Furthermore, these improved methods may provide graft polymers with decreased levels of “in-growth” of the bulk solid support. The invention also provides substrate polymers, with improved properties for solid phase synthesis and diagnostic applications, which may be made by the disclosed methods.

  • Patent number: 6856656
Abstract: An iterative system for performing carrier phase tracking of symbols using a serial turbo decoder. Estimates of a buffered block of symbols are provided by a serial turbo decoder. Optionally, reliability metrics for the estimates are provided as well. Responsive to this information, a tracking loop module determines derotation phases for each of the symbols in the buffer. A symbol derotator derotates each of the buffered symbols in the block by its corresponding derotation phase. The derotated symbols are stored back in the buffer. The process may repeat itself for a prescribed number of iterations, after which the serial turbo decoder provides estimates of the underlying source bits.

  • Patent number: 6855840
Abstract: Polymers and copolymers synthesized by means that yield a narrow range of molecular weights can have different properties than polymers synthesized by conventional means. In order to obtain such polymers, however, polymerization must be controlled. One type of controlled polymerization is the reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) process, which has characteristics of a living polymerization. The present invention discloses a group of dithioesters and trithioesters suitable as chain transfer agents for RAFT polymerization. The present invention also discloses RAFT polymerizations conducted in aqueous media.

  • Patent number: 6851279
Abstract: Jewelry articles having magnetic elements and interchangeable settings are disclosed. In one aspect, the jewelry articles include magnetically coupling body portions and interchangeable settings. The body portions magnetically couple together to hold the interchangeable settings. For example, the body portions can magnetically couple together using rare earth magnets to form a composite ring. Preferably, at least one of the body portions is rotatable to tangentially break the magnetic coupling between the body portions to interchange the setting. In another aspect of the present invention, magnetic elements are used to magnetically suspend a movable setting on a jewelry article. An longitudinal member has at least one end connected to the jewelry article. The setting is movably disposed on the longitudinal member. A first magnetic element adjacent an end of the longitudinal member magnetically repels a second magnetic element on the setting.
