  • Patent number: 4382685
Abstract: Stirring apparatus for stirring particles in a liquid medium comprising a cylindrical stirring vessel having a stirring rod extending within the vessel to stir its contents. The rod has a bulbous tip which describes an orbital path in the vessel to sweep out an annular trough or channel formed in the bottom of the vessel. The annular trough or channel is contoured in section to follow the flow lines set up in the medium by secondary motion stirring effects. In this way accumulation of particles due to the secondary motion, which would otherwise occur at the corners and center of the bottom of the vessel, is avoided. The apparatus is advantageously useful in cell culture research particularly for stirring microcarriers in a liquid culture medium because it becomes possible to maintain the microcarriers in uniform suspension at lower stirring speeds than heretofore possible thus avoiding damage to the growing cells and improving overall cell yield.

Abstract: A workman's lift platform apparatus has a vertically swingable and extensible boom with a workman's platform at the outer end. A color coding indicating the amount of boom extension is provided on the fly section of the boom, visible to the workman in the platform, and an indicator plate having corresponding color coding is provided adjacent the controls on the platform. The indicator plate in the form of a drum is driven proportionately to the angular movement of the boom by a pair of sheathed, push-pull cables, or by a sheathed torsion cable. In other embodiments, the indicator plate is tilted in proportion to the angular movement of the boom by a sheathed push-pull cable or by a parallel bar linkage. A cursor is provided adjacent the indicator plate, and is part of a gravity-operated pendulum.

  • Patent number: 4340815
Abstract: Method and apparatus for preparing a specimen for observation under the electron microscope by ion erosion. A saddle-field ion source is employed to irradiate the specimen with the specimen held in close proximity spacing with respect to the cathode aperture of the ion source. Such close proximity spacing ensures that the specimen is thinned at a rapid rate comparable with the rates attained with chemical etching.

  • Patent number: 4326730
Abstract: A hitch is disclosed which readily attaches itself via hitch assemblies to the bumper of an automobile and simultaneously secures the cross bar or draft bar of the hitch in a manner which requires no threading devices to obtain the securing action. In fact the securing action is by the simple movement of a lever into an over centered position on the hitch assembly and this in cooperation with two chains thereof, one attached to the upper margin and the other attached to the lower margin of the bumper or possibly the frame of the car securingly clasps not only the hitch assembly to the bumper but the draft bar to the hitch assembly. Preferably, two hitch assemblies are provided one located near each end of the cross or draft bar. Thus with "snaps" of each lever into over center position the bumper hitch is secured to the automobile awaiting for connection of the trailer tow bar thereof for coupling to an awaiting trailer.
