Patent number: 4663420Abstract: Polyetheroxy-substituted polyphosphazenes having reduced mono and polyetheroxy alkanol, alkali metal and halide contaminants that are suitable for use in making solid electrolytes are made by dissolving the impure polyphosphazene in an inert solvent (e.g. tetrahydrofuran) and mixing this solution with a cycloalkane (e.g. cyclohexane) to precipitate the polyetheroxy-substituted polyphosphazene with reduced etheroxy alkanol content. This can be dissolved in water and contacted with an anion exchange material to remove residual halide anions. The purified polyetheroxy-substituted polyphosphazene is then recovered by distilling off the water.Type: GrantFiled: January 21, 1986Date of Patent: May 5, 1987Assignee: Ethyl CorporationInventor: Suae-Chen Chang

Patent number: 4659021Abstract: A process for purifying crude brominated aromatic compounds such as decabromodiphenyl oxide containing impurities. The crude brominated aromatic compound undergoes a single processing step of grinding in the presence of heated air. The temperature is sufficient to effect substantial removal of impurities and yet remains below the melting point of the brominated aromatic compound.Type: GrantFiled: October 25, 1985Date of Patent: April 21, 1987Assignee: Ethyl CorporationInventors: Wendell G. Bark, John C. Parks
-
Patent number: 4659863Abstract: A process which enhances conversion and speeds the reaction rate for the preparation of esters. Methyl acrylate and a hindered phenol are reacted (i) in the presence of an alkali metal alkaline catalyst that provides a phenolate anion and (ii) in the presence of an agent which solubilizes the phenolate to enhance the reaction rate. Excellent yields of methyl ester are obtained in a rapid reaction and by-products are minimal. The invention includes a preparation of methyl .beta.-(3,5-dialkyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)propionates by reaction of a hindered phenol with methyl acrylate in the presence of an alkaline catalyst and dimethyl sulfoxide present in an amount sufficient to advance the reaction rate.Type: GrantFiled: September 12, 1985Date of Patent: April 21, 1987Assignee: Ethyl CorporationInventor: Lester P. J. Burton
