  • Patent number: 6347736
Abstract: A nestable mailbox (10) having a tapered body (12) with an open first end (24) and a second end (30). The tapering of the body (12) is such that the first end (24) circumscribes a greater surface area than that circumscribed by the second end (30). A door (26) for the mailbox (10) is connected to the body (12) at the first end (24). The mailbox can then be nested with other like mailboxes by inserting the second end (30) of one mailbox into the first end (24) of another mailbox. The door of each mailbox in the nested arrangement can point downwardly frontwardly or downwardly rearwardly. The nestable mailbox may additionally, if desired, carry another door (76) at the second end (30).

  • Patent number: 6322702
Abstract: Hydroxide values and associated alkali metal may be recovered from alkaline aqueous solutions using classes of fluorinated alcohols in a water immiscible solvent. The alcohols are characterized by fluorine substituents which are proximal to the acidic alcohol protons and are located to adjust the acidity of the extractant and the solubility of the extractant in the solvent. A method for stripping the extractant and solvent to regenerate the extractant and purified aqueous hydroxide solution is described.

  • Patent number: 6299950
Abstract: The invention is a product and a process for making a fireproof, impact limiter, homogeneous aggregate material for casting inside a hazardous material shipping container, or a double-contained Type-B nuclear shipping container. The homogeneous aggregate material is prepared by mixing inorganic compounds with water, pouring the mixture into the void spaces between an inner storage containment vessel and an outer shipping container, vibrating the mixture inside the shipping container, with subsequent curing, baking, and cooling of the mixture to form a solidified material which encapsulates an inner storage containment vessel inside an outer shipping container. The solidified material forms a protective enclosure around an inner storage containment vessel which may store hazardous, toxic, or radioactive material.

  • Patent number: 6289881
Abstract: A conversion system for converting a spark ignition engine to operate on gaseous fuel is disclosed. The conversion system includes an electronic controller which operates on several novel principles to provide superior performance/responsiveness and to reduce exhaust emissions. The controller in accordance with the invention assumes complete control of spark ignition timing when gaseous fuel mode is enabled and generates independent spark ignition signals tailored to the gaseous fuel. The controller also generates an independent pulse width modulated gaseous fuel injection signal that controls a high performance electronic solenoid injector valve to supply gaseous fuel to the engine. Variable injector speed is used to compensate for the dynamic range of the engine. A novel dual array block learn scheme is used to provide efficient fuel control in engines equipped with closed-loop monitoring systems and exhaust gas recirculation.

  • Patent number: 6289717
Abstract: A sensor apparatus is provided using a microcantilevered spring element having a coating of a detector molecule such as an antibody or antigen. A sample containing a target molecule or substrate is provided to the coating. The spring element bends in response to the stress induced by the binding which occurs between the detector and target molecules. Deflections of the cantilever are detected by a variety of detection techniques. The microcantilever may be approximately 1 to 200 &mgr;m long, approximately 1 to 50 &mgr;m wide, and approximately 0.3 to 3.0 &mgr;m thick. A sensitivity for detection of deflections is in the range of 0.01 nanometers.

  • Patent number: 6284015
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method that comprises dispersing a stream of a melt flowing from a die by applying perturbations to said stream in an inert cooling gas which has an optimal temperature and is depleted of oxygen up to a value not exceeding 0.0001 mol. %. after their output at a stationary generation mode, the granules are recovered in the outlet portion of a heat-exchange chamber. The die is made of a heat-resistant material and has a flow section with a length defined by the relation 2d<1<20d. The perturbation frequency of the stream is defined by relation f=Wko/&pgr;do(1+c&tgr;)2  (I) where &tgr; is the dispersion time (at the initial moment &tgr;=0); c is the empirical coefficient characterizing the die material resistance to the perturbation of the stream; w is the flow rate of the stream; do is the initial value of the stream diameter; and ko is equal to 0.7 and is the value of the non-dimensional wave number.

  • Patent number: 6246061
Abstract: Fluorescent dichroic fibers randomly incorporated within a media provide an improved method for authentication and counterfeiting protection. The dichroism is provided by an alignment of fluorescent molecules along the length of the fibers. The fluorescent fibers provide an authentication mechanism of varying levels of capability. The authentication signature depends on four parameters, the x,y position, the dichroism and the local environment. The availability of so many non-deterministic variables makes production of counterfeit articles (e.g., currency, credit cards, etc.
