  • Patent number: 6213348
Abstract: A pumping system includes a chamber (10) having an intake orifice (11) for introducing liquid into said chamber (10). A discharge orifice (12) discharges the liquid from the chamber (10). Another orifice (13) receives pressurized gas. A valve is located at each of the orifices (11, 12, 13). The valves (15, 16, 17) are controlled in synchronization according to two phases. During the first phase the valve (15) opens at the intake orifice (11) while the other two valves (16 and 17) are closed, in order to fill the chamber (10). During a second phase the valve (15) associated with the intake orifice (11) is closed while the other two valves (16 and 17) are open, this enabling pressurized gas to be introduced into the chamber (10), thereby expelling the liquid in the chamber (10) through the discharge orifice (12).

  • Patent number: 6207719
Abstract: A continuous output system makes paper coating by combining an emulsifier with ASA particles having sizes in the low to sub-micron region. A turbine, pump, blender or other device exposes the ASA to a number of repeated episodes of high shear until the resulting ASA is in the form of particles having a mean average diameter in approximately the 1&mgr; range. A manifold provides the system piping in order to minimize the internal areas where ASA may build up. This manifold has a plurality of holes bored in a solid metal block so that each of the bores forms a short pipe which is only an inch or two in length in order to reduce the interior surface area of an ASA transport and conveyance system.

  • Patent number: 6205108
Abstract: An optical head of the present invention applicable to an optical disk drive includes a light-transmitting phase shifting device. The phase shifting device reduces aberration ascribable to a difference in the thickness of the substrate of an optical disk. This not only insures the effective reproduction of data out of optical disks having different substrate thicknesses, but also guarantees a sufficient quantity of light representative of a reproduced signal and a sufficient lens numerical aperture. The optical head therefore achieves a desirable reproduced signal characteristic.

  • Patent number: 6201268
Abstract: A charge-coupled device has a first P-type well layer which forms a charge transfer section and a second P-type well layer which forms a floating diffusion layer section and within which the first P-type well layer is formed. The second P-type well layer below the floating diffusion layer section has an impurity concentration lower than that of the first P-type well layer whereby a depletion layer formed therein by a PN-junction flares in the direction to the second P-type well layer. With this arrangement, it is made possible to reduce the floating diffusion capacitance and to maintain a large output voltage with respect to a signal electron charge.

  • Patent number: 6195959
Abstract: An automatic packaging machine for forming and filling a latching flip-top box uses a two part mandrel which are joined by a hinge. One of the two hinged parts has a roller thereon for following a cam track having a quarter turn spiral therein. As the roller follows the spiral causing one hinged part to move through a quarter turn causing the flip-top to fold over and be formed. A somewhat loose tab on the top edge of the bottom of the box is a latch tab which is caught when the flip-top folds over.

  • Patent number: 6194231
Abstract: A method for monitoring a condition of a polishing pad used in a chemical-mechanical planarization (CMP) process to polish a semiconductor wafer is disclosed. The method uses a linear multi-dimensional scanning device arranged above the polishing pad in a radial direction to monitor the changes in profile of the surface of the polishing pad, and determines the condition of the polishing pad according to the profile information. When the change in profile of the surface of the polishing pad substantially exceeds a preset value, e.g. 2 mm, it is indicated that the polishing pad should be changed.

  • Patent number: 6171638
Abstract: The temperature sensitive differential of the solubilities of various isoflavone fractions is used to initially separate the fractions by heating an aqueous soy molasses or soy whey feed stream. The temperature of the feed stream is selected according to the temperature at which a desired isoflavone fraction or fractions become soluble. Then, the heated feed stream is passed through an ultrafiltration membrane or reverse osmosis in order to concentrate the solids. The resulting permeate is put through a resin adsorption process carried out in at least one liquid chromatography column to further separate the desired isoflavone fractions. Various processes are described for drying and crystallizing the isoflavone fractions to a powder. A solvent is then added to the isoflavone fraction to dissolve impurities and rehydrate the dry powder. Usually, the rehydrated isoflavone is used as an ingredient in a food ingredient or food product.
