  • Patent number: 4512834
Abstract: In a positive drive power transmission system composed of a toothed belt and two or more pulleys, operating noise resulting from the impact of the belt and the pulleys is dramatically reduced by having surface discontinuities on either the belt or on the pulleys on those surfaces where the belt and the pulleys engage in impact contact when in operation. The surface discontinuities may be formed by recessed or raised portions of the belt or pulleys, may be straight or curved, and may be substantially parallel to the tensile member or at an angle thereto. Several methods of manufacturing belts with such surface discontinuities are disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4483435
Abstract: A bottle conveying and cleaning apparatus for handling a succession of bottles at high speed. The apparatus comprises a lower portion of a vertical first rotary conveyor which receives the bottles in open-end trailing disposition, reorienting means which changes the disposition of each bottle to open-end radially outward during its conveyance by the first rotary conveyor, a linear conveyor which grasps each bottle at the bottom of the first rotary conveyor while its open end is downward and maintains each bottle in open-end downward orientation while coveying it past cleaning means associated with the linear conveyor, and means for inverting each bottle, removing it from the linear conveyor and placing it on an output conveyor with the open end up.

  • Patent number: 4463846
Abstract: An apparatus for selectively orienting bottles by the apparatus in random first-end leading and first end trailing dispositions to substantially uniform first end leading dispositions. The apparatus includes transport means which engages each bottle at two surface portions which lie on a common lateral axis of such bottle and transport each bottle while it is so engaged at a predetermined speed. Booster means engage a third portion of each such bottle remote from such common lateral axis and urge the portion so engaged to move in the same direction at a higher predetermined speed. Thus, each bottle will tend to pivot about the common lateral axis of the portions engaged by the transport means. Stop means prevent the bottle which is initially in first end leading disposition from so pivoting but permit any bottle which is initially in second end leading disposition to pivot towards a first end leading disposition.

  • Patent number: 4462692
Abstract: An extrusion apparatus having a barrel and a rotatable threaded screw coaxially positioned therein is disclosed. The apparatus includes an upstream inlet section having an opening therein for receiving material to be processed by the apparatus, a compression section downstream of the inlet section, and a mixing or plasticizing section downstream of the compression section. The interior surface of the barrel is provided with an undercut therein which intercommunicates the feed opening with the compression section and has a portion thereof which extends downstream in the compression section about the interior surface of the barrel with a continuously decreasing cross-sectional area. The undercut may be formed in a cylindrical insert carried within the barrel and, in an alternate embodiment, a second undercut cylindrical insert positioned about the first insert and rotatable relative thereto may be employed to vary the cross-sectional area of the undercut.

  • Patent number: 4462691
Abstract: An extruder, including a rotor and a barrel, having mixing or working zones therein in which the material being mixed or worked is transferred layer by layer from upstream grooves in the rotor to input grooves in the barrel, and from output grooves in the barrel, which grooves are interleaved with the input grooves, layer by layer back to downstream grooves in the rotor. The input and output grooves of the barrel are intercommunicated by means of corresponding channels each of which has a selectively radially movable throttling member positioned therein for varying the cross-sectional opening of the channel in which it is positioned and, thus, the amount of shearing action and work performed on the material passing through such channel.

  • Patent number: 4407347
Abstract: A radial ply pneumatic tire is provided with a tread reinforcement including a first layer of at least one ply of tire cord fabric wherein the cords have a high modulus of elasticity. A second layer which overlies said first layer is at least one composite ply of tire cord fabric including a central strip of steel cords oriented at an angle of from 60.degree. to 90.degree. with the equatorial plane of the pneumatic tire, and two lateral strips abutting the central strip having cords formed from material possessing a low modulus of elasticity.

  • Patent number: 4363260
Abstract: An air cylinder including a piston adapted to be stopped freely in any position as desired includes an automatic restoring type air cylinder member and a hydraulic cylinder member. The piston is formed with a hydraulic cylinder chamber having fitted therein a hydraulic fixed piston of the hydraulic cylinder member so that the piston can move freely in a cylinder body. An oil chamber defined by the end of the hydraulic fixed piston and the end of the hydraulic cylinder chamber is communicated with an oil tank via an oil passage mounting a check valve that can be opened by pressing means including a pilot piston and other parts.

  • Patent number: 4359897
Abstract: Apparatus and method for marking a rotating tire, for example, to indicate the point of maximum radial force variation. The apparatus includes a marker head which is pivotable into contact with an inking pad in a direction similar to the direction of rotation of the tire at the point of contact of the marker head with the tire and which is also retractable from the tire.

  • Patent number: 4349346
Abstract: A construction comprising a sheet of two contiguous detachable leaf members is folded and separated to form slide and sleeve components of the calculator. Fold lines in the sheet are formed parallel to a separation or tear line that divides one leaf member from the other leaf member. In assembling the slide calculator the leaf members can be separated before or after the folding operation. A marginal portion provided on one of the leaf members enables the sheet to be secured by adhesive or other suitable form of attachment to a newspaper or magazine, a package container, or a package label. In various embodiments of the invention an information readout is provided on reverse sides of the calculator including one embodiment wherein the printed format of the slide and sleeve components is applied to one surface only of the respective leaf member.

  • Patent number: 4328849
Abstract: A vehicle tire with tractive elements for positive engagement with the ground surface is disclosed. The tire carcass has a tread including raised features. Means for positively linking tractive elements positioned radially outwardly of the tread to the raised features of the tread are provided in the form of a flexible but substantially inextensible belt positioned radially outwardly of the tread, and retainer elements positioned radially inwardly of the belt, the tractive elements being positioned radially outwardly of the belt and being releasably attached to the retainer elements for clamping the belt tightly therebetween. Inflation pressure within the carcass expands its crown region to maintain the belt in a taut condition. The retainer elements are sectionally constructed to facilitate assembly and disassembly of the tire.
