Patent number: 5060472Abstract: This disclosure is for a liner for the exit nozzle of a gas turbine engine. The liner is double walled liner with insulation material between the walls, and with a plurality of tubes extending through the walls and the insulation. Primary cooling is accomplished by film cooling through the tubes. During periods of low coolant medium flow, the liner provides a barrier against radiation and convection. The use of the insulating material allows both walls of the liner to carry the pressure loads.Type: GrantFiled: April 12, 1990Date of Patent: October 29, 1991Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Air ForceInventor: Gary A. Patent number: 5021643Abstract: A pointer/tracker system is disclosed for use with an array of laser telescopes. This pointer/tracker system uses one telescope as a reference and causes all others in the system to "track" the reference. The common element concept is maintained by a synthetic approach. Each tilt detector in the system has its own XY coordinate system relative to the detector orientation. Provisions were made in the Pointer/Tracker to align each independent coordinate system to the reference coordinate system. The technique used to accomplish this is allowing cross coupling of the XY coordinates to match that the reference.Type: GrantFiled: March 13, 1990Date of Patent: June 4, 1991Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Air ForceInventor: Mark G. Patent number: 4987293Abstract: A digital position monitor is disclosed which is used to output an X and Y position of a laser beam on a quadrant or lateral effect detector. The device includes two high speed microprocessors to perform either a quad cell or lateral effect algorithm in the open loop mode. In the closed loop operation, in addition to the algorithm, a digital filter is also executed. The decision to open or close the tilt loops is made by a central processor or by an external input to the central processor. Each microprocessor is designed to perform either the X or Y function. In brief, the operation is as follows: a detector senses the position error and provides a signal to analog circuits. The output from the analog circuits is applied in parallel to the circuits of the X and Y channels. Both channels comprise an analog-to-digital converter, a microprocessor and a digital-to-analog converter connected in series. Each channel provides an X or Y output.Type: GrantFiled: March 14, 1990Date of Patent: January 22, 1991Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Air ForceInventor: Mark G. Patent number: 4948229Abstract: This invention comprises a new group of fiber optic switching devices that use layers of surface-established ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCs) as the switching media. In each of the devices light impinges upon the ferroelectric liquid crystal a an angle of 90 degrees (normal incidence) with the surface plane. Each FLC gives 0 degrees or 90 degree optical rotation, depending upon the polarity of the electric voltage applied. A series of polarizing beam splitters are used to separate unpolarized light into its s and P polarization components. After ferroelectric liquid crystal switching, other polarizing beam splitters are used to direct the s and p light to output optical paths. The switches discussed include voltage controlled 2.times.2, 1.times.4, 1.times.6, 1.times.8, 4.times.4 and dual plane devices that use one or more layers of surface stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystals to direct optical signals.Type: GrantFiled: February 15, 1989Date of Patent: August 14, 1990Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Air ForceInventor: Richard A. Patent number: 4924401Abstract: The invention comprises an aircraft ground collision avoidance system which utilizes a flight control computer for monitoring aircraft flight states and calculating preferred aircraft flyup altitudes at which automatic aircraft flyups should be initiated. The flyup altitude is determined by calculating aircraft altitude to be lost during a recovery maneuver from a current aircraft flight state. The invention also comprises an aircraft autopilot for monitoring aircraft flight states and initiating an automatic aircraft flyup when so directed by the flight control computer. The monitored aircraft states include aircraft airspeed, angle of attack, bank angle and velocity. Sensor lag, aircraft load factor and engine throttle position are also considered in determining when to conduct an automatic aircraft flyup.Type: GrantFiled: October 30, 1987Date of Patent: May 8, 1990Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Air ForceInventors: Gregory W. Patent number: 4893128Abstract: Sidelobe jamming in dual diversity troposcatter link receivers is effectively suppressed by providing an auxilliary low power antenna, the output of which is differenced from the high power main antenna signals prior to processing in the receivers's dual diversity demodulator. The auxilliary antenna power is substantially equal to the sidelobe power of the main antennas. The auxilliary antenna receives jamming power that is comparable to the jamming power received by the main antennas. However, it receives much lower desired signal power. Differencing of the signals therefore, cancels jamming power with minimal effect on the desired signals.Type: GrantFiled: November 29, 1979Date of Patent: January 9, 1990Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Air ForceInventors: Steen A. Patent number: 4815855Abstract: The invention comprises an interferometric load sensor, or force balance 10 which utilizes etalons 12, 14 to form a reflective cavity 16. A fringe pattern is formed in cavity 16 by light from laser source 26. One of the etalons (14) is mounted to a section 20 that is sensitive to the application of a force 22. Flexing of cantilever 24 due to application of force 22 on section 20 changes the air gap wedge angle between the etalons 12, 14 and thereby shifts the fringe field formed in cavity 16. The shift in the fringe field is observed by light detectors 30, 32.Type: GrantFiled: July 3, 1986Date of Patent: March 28, 1989Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Air ForceInventor: William P. Patent number: 4801459Abstract: A technique for rapidly delivering drugs and/or chemicals to a specific area of the body by subjecting a liposome encapsulated drug and/or chemical to nonionizing electromagnetic fields. By subjecting the liposome to such fields in the range of 26-2,450 MHz drug/chemical release occurs in a rapid fashion and at temperatures that the liposomes are normally not leaky. This is a non-thermal effect of the field on the liposome that is not related to heating. Consequently, localized release of drug/chemicals can be effected without subjecting the diseased tissue to adverse heating. In addition, drug/chemical release due to electromagnetic-field treatment of liposomes is enhanced by serum and/or oxygen.Type: GrantFiled: August 5, 1986Date of Patent: January 31, 1989Inventor: Robert P. Patent number: 4795123Abstract: The damping of vibrations in a mechanical structure is accomplished while minimizing the impact on the design and operation of the structure through the use of a plurality of attachable vibration damping elements. Each vibration damping element contains: an accelerometer, an integrator, mixer, power amplifier, and a force actuator. The accelerometer measures the motion of the vibration in the structure at its attachment point and produces an acceleration measurement signal. The integrator integrates the acceleration measurement signal to produce a velocity measurement signal. The mixer produces a composite motion signal by mixing the acceleration measurement signal with the velocity measurement signal. The power amplifier adjusts the phase and amplitude of the composite motion signal to drive the force actuator to damp the sensed vibration along one dimension at the attachment point of the force actuator.Type: GrantFiled: May 14, 1987Date of Patent: January 3, 1989Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Air ForceInventors: Robert L.
