Abstract: The inventions relate to a method for operating a controllable selective optical add/drop channel for fiber-optic communication system provided with 2N of wavelength-division multiplexing channels, whose optical frequencies are retunable at a constant frequency separations ?v between adjacent channels, with the aid of the inventive controllable optical add/drop multiplexers (70, 80, 90) that comprise multi-stage structures of optical filters ({75-i}, {85-i}, {95-i}), that are connected in different manner and provided with devices, for example electro-optical and thermo-optical phase shift devices, for controllable tuning the transmissions characteristics thereof. The optical filters are embodied in the form of single-stage (20), two-stage (40) and/or multi-stage (60) asymmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometers. The controllable optical add/drop multiplexer can be produced according to integrated optic technique in the form of monolithic solid-state device.

  • Patent number: 8340233
Abstract: Signals transmitting symbols through a multi-paths channel are received by a diversity receiver using at least two branches. The signals are combined after their processing in individual branches, minimizing combining loss of EGC receivers, minimizing BER and optimizing the performance. Processing in individual branches includes estimation of the phase changes induced by the channel at each received signal, with reference to the transmitted signal, and weighting of each signal by a co-phasing coefficient based on said estimation, so that all received signals are co-phased. An optimization step includes estimation of mean value and variance of signal to noise ratio (SNR) in each branch, using sampling techniques, and weighting the received signals by an optimization coefficient calculated from the mean value and variance. The process avoids expensive hardware for continuous estimation of instantaneous channel gains at each branch.

  • Patent number: 8334475
Abstract: An energy beam assisted solid-state welding welds a wire material to a substrate. A wire of coating or repairing material is placed in contact with a surface or surfaces of a substrate. A beam is directed into an outer flat surface of the wire, which heats the wire through flat outer surface of the wire with beam energy. Beam energy produces compression stress-waves that drive molecules of the material flat wire into a surface of the substrate, joining the material and the substrate with strong wave shaped interfaces.

  • Patent number: 8298477
Abstract: A lance holder characterized by a high degree of safety is equipped with a mounting or a pipe fixing, which safely prevents a rotation even of a bent lance pipe in the lance holder. The clamping head has a fixing part and a clamping part which ensure a punctiform fixation by way of displaceable pressure elements, particularly in the form of spheres. At least three such spheres are disposed across the circumference in a distributed manner, and ensure the safe fixation across a large tolerance range with regard to the dimensions of lance pipes. Said large tolerance region is further secured in that sealing sleeves having a larger inside diameter may be used, since the same are no longer deformed in the longitudinal direction in order to provide the seal, but instead are deformed in the radial direction. In summary the high degree of operational safety is also completed by the association of a chip and/or attachment of a nanocoating.

  • Patent number: 8296886
Abstract: An adjustable support in the form of a headrest comprises a flexible arm (2) carrying a bifurcated branches (3a). The arm (82) is made up of identical segments (20) that can pivot in relation to each other. A wire (5) holds the arm (2) together and may be loosened by an adjusting mechanism (6) controlled by a knob (9). Partially cylindric surfaces (27, 29) on opposing ends (21, 22) of segments (20) have teeth-like projections extending transversely of the partially cylindric faces (27, 29) for mutual engagement and securing mutual position of adjacent segments (20).
