  • Patent number: 8173734
Abstract: Clay platelets are separated from an agglomeration of clay platelets by treating with cobalt acetate and leaving cobalt particles on the platelets. Carbon nanotubes are grown on the platelets at the cobalt sites, and the nanotubes separate platelets from the agglomeration. The separated platelets and nanotubes are acid cleaned. Intumescent fire retardant materials are chemisorbed on the clay platelets and nanotubes.

  • Patent number: 8176087
Abstract: Data is stored and data objects are indexed by an index having a tree configuration and the tree is traversed to identify the location of a data object. Data objects are analyzed to assess the extent to which a second data object is related to a first data object, and locations of related data objects within the tree are clustered so as to minimize tree traversal when accessing data objects considered to be related.

  • Patent number: 8167264
Abstract: Self-supporting intermediate walls (12) for cellular division of mould lower parts in a concrete casting machine of the kind typically used for making cast items in the form of concrete blocks for wall construction and elements, solid blocks or blocks with cavities or recesses in two or more rows. By the self-supporting design, the distance between rows of products may be reduced for better utilization of the production plate while at the same time maintaining the replaceability of wear parts. By the invention is indicated a self-supporting intermediate wall (12) consisting of two halves, an intermediate wall with lower pins (18) and an intermediate wall with upper pins (20) which, when the two halves are assembled with the pins engaging a partitioning plate (8), form a self-supporting intermediate wall (12). For moulds with core supports (28), intermediate wall parts (22 and 23) are used with a recess (25) in which the boss (29) on the core support iron (28) fits.

  • Patent number: 8161780
Abstract: A thumb operated door latch and lock assembly has an exterior grip and thumb lever, a motion converter, a key cylinder, a strengthening plate and an interior latch lever and locking knob. The thumb lever moves the converter which turns a latch tongue that extends through a receiver in the latch assembly. The interior lever turns a limited engagement interior hub collar. A figure eight opening in the collar turns the latch tongue to withdraw the latches. Turning the interior lever upward disables the thumb lever. Turning the lever to withdraw the latches moves a slide upward within guide plates. The slide turns an interior lever and an extended tongue on the key cylinder to withdraw the dead bolt simultaneously with the latches.

  • Patent number: 8156570
Abstract: The lack of air flow under body armor, helmets, and thick garments can lead to excessive moisture build up and discomfort on the wearers body due to lack of heat removal and effective evaporation of sweat. By incorporating wick covered heat pipes or thermal conductors with air flow channels in the apparel contact area between the garments, helmets, and body armor the effectiveness air flow cooling and evaporation of sweat can be restored. Humidity or temperature auto-actuated bi-material valves are used to control this air-moisture-heat flow to achieve a controlled comfortable humidity-temperature environment and avoid excessive cooling. Supplementary air pumps, filters, dehydrators, fluid pumps, heating fluids, and cooling fluids may be incorporated to enhance the effectiveness. Biocides and hydrophilic materials are also incorporated on the wick coverings to avoid biological growth and maintain performance to achieve a healthy environment for the wearer.

  • Patent number: 8156717
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for wrapping a stack (12, 13) of superposed sheets, brochures and/or folders with a wrapping sheet (15). The stack (13) is travelling in a first direction (4) on a first conveyor (2) defining a conveying path. A supply of wrapping sheets (14) is placed in line with the first conveyor (2). At the downstream end of the first conveyor (2) a rotating waver wheel (10) is arranged. This waver wheel pulls a top sheet (15) from the supply of wrapping sheets (14) and turns the wrapping sheet (15). Downstream of the first conveyor (2) a second conveyor (3) is provided defining a gap (5) between the first and second conveyors in which the wrapping sheet is inserted. As the stack (13) engages the wrapping sheet (15), the rotating waver wheel (10) folds the sheet around the stack.

  • Patent number: 8153978
Abstract: A single focal plane integrated circuit hybrid replaces multiple focal plane circuits and associated off-focal plane signal processing electronics. A dual function, dual color focal plane PSD sensor chip assembly includes a PSD array, a traditional pixelized camera array, a signal processing chip, and flip-chip interconnects and wirebond pads to support electronics on the signal processing chip. The camera array is made of a material sensitive to wavelengths longer than the PSD array material is sensitive to. The PSD array is disposed in the same substrate as the camera array. The PSD array tracks object locations and directs the camera array to window and zoom while capturing images. Inherent registration of PSD cells to the pixelized camera array makes responsivity map testing and spatial calibration unnecessary. Reduction in power dissipation is achieved by powering on the camera array only when the PSD detects a change in scene.

  • Patent number: 8153959
Abstract: A passive radon surface flux monitor has a dome with an open base having a radial flange and a top opening where an electret can be threaded. Attached to and extending below the open base of the dome is a metal collar that supports the dome when placed on the ground. The collar holds a conductive screen against the radial flange. The conductive screen permits diffusion of gas including radon, thoron, and their daughter products into the dome. A thin paper diaphragm on the conductive screen prevents dust from entering the dome. Sealant seals the connection of the collar, screen, flange, and diaphragm to prevent lateral loss of radon. A collar is pressed partially into the ground at a suitable site and an electret is threaded into the top opening. After a time, the electret is removed and its change in voltage measured.

  • Patent number: 8148923
Abstract: Low-injection energy electrons are accelerated in a continuous standing wave linear accelerator. Electron flow is supplied directly from a low-energy electron source to subsequent sequential accelerating units interconnected via connection cells. By grouping electrons in the first bunch resonator at a determined gap voltage, increasing the electron energy in a booster resonator and accelerating the electron energy in the accelerating unit, the optimal phase of particles with respect to the electromagnetic field is ensured. The length of each accelerating structure segment, which is located between centers of the adjacent cells, is based on the equality between the relation of the length of each following segment to the length of the previous segment and the relation of the average electron speed in the previous segment to the average electron speed in the following segment.

  • Patent number: 8063262
Abstract: A hazardous gas abatement system decontaminates an exit gas stream containing global warming gases using an electrical heater and a water scrubber. One or more top flow hazardous gas inlets introduce hazardous gases into a heater compartment. Air or oxygen is introduced into a separate chamber for dynamic oxidation and cooling. The streams are mixed and oxygen reacts with the hazardous gases. Solid particulates from the reaction are removed by a filter in a quick disconnect bottom chamber. Filtered exhaust gases flow upward in an exhaust chamber surrounding the heater compartment and through water spray scrubbers. A cleaning ring mounted on an eccentric rod cleans particles from the outside of the internal heater, and the inside of the external heater. An air cylinder drives the eccentric rod and cleaning ring down and up between the heaters and stores the ring above the gas inlets.
