Abstract: This invention relates to a method of controlling the exposure time in apparatuses for the re-enlargement of a microfilm in which the density of the microfilm is ascertained during exposure and the exposure time is controlled in accordance with the ascertained density, which comprises guiding a light-sensitive measuring unit, during a minimum exposure time needed and at a short distance above a light-sensitive recording material, and simultaneously measuring the density of the microfilm with the light-sensitive measuring unit, the signals measured by the light-sensitive measuring unit, which correspond to the areas of the microfilm having the maximum or minimum density, determining the exposure time. The invention also relates to an apparatus for performing the method.
Abstract: In the manufacture of cellulose glycolate, a reaction mixture comprising per 1 part by weight of cellulose 0.2 to 0.6 part by weight of sodium hydroxide, 0.5 to 1.75 parts by weight of sodium monochloroacetate, 7 to 22 parts by weight of isopropanol, and from 20% to 50% by weight, based on the weight of isopropanol, of water is subjected to shearing forces at a temperature less than 30.degree. C to effect intimate mixing and then reacted to cause etherification of the cellulose in a reaction area held at a temperature in the range of 60.degree. C to 90.degree. C and held constant within each section of the reaction area. The residence time of the mixture in the mixing zone is at most one-tenth of its residence time in the reaction area. The solid and liquid components of the reaction mixture after etherification are separated mechanically.

Abstract: This invention relates to an improvement in a method for increasing the production of stretched flat film webs of thermoplastic material in which a melt of thermoplastic material is extruded from a slot die, the melt is solidified to form a film, the film is transversely stretched, the stretched film is heat-set, divided into narrower webs, and wound up, the improvement comprising extruding the melt from a slot die wider than the die normally employed for the production of a preliminary film, which usually corresponds to the width of a transverse stretching frame, dividing the melt in the longitudinal direction into at least two films, superposing the film webs, and transversely stretching said superposed webs. The invention also relates to an apparatus for performing the method.

Abstract: This invention relates to an improvement in the process for shirring cylindrical tubular casings, especially artificial sausage casings of synthetic material, in which an inflated casing is conveyed in the direction of its longitudinal axis and shirred, with pleating, against a counter-force by shirring forces acting upon the circumference of the casing, the improvement comprising that the forces acting upon the surface of the casing do so continuously and simultaneously, at equal intervals, at a plurality of points on at least two straight lines extending parallel to and symmetrically about the longitudinal axis of the casing, the action being at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the casing, and, simultaneously, in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the casing, against the counter-force.
