Patent number: 4799393Abstract: Sampler apparatus and method are provided and include both closed and open tube samplers, and selector valve operable to select therebetween for sample supply to automated sample analysis apparatus. A shear valve divides the samples into separate sample quantities for independent sample quantity analysis by multi-channel sample analysis apparatus. A pressure equilibration chamber prevents vacuum build-up in the closed tube sampler to insure the supply of consistent sample quantities therefrom. A source of a pressurized rinse solution is provided; and is operatively connected to the sampler apparatus in such manner as to insure the particularly thorough rinsing and cleansing of all relevant sampler components to remove sample residue therefrom between sampling operations, thereby reducing sample carryover to levels below those of clinical significance.Type: GrantFiled: November 20, 1987Date of Patent: January 24, 1989Assignee: Technicon Instruments CorporationInventor: Kenneth F. Patent number: 4781102Abstract: The apparatus comprise a generally tubular outer element, a generally cylindrical inner element disposed therewithin and sized relative thereto to provide a generally annular operating space therebetween. An intermediate element is disposed in said operating space and is dimensioned relative thereto to create interference fits with said outer and inner elements and prevent relative movement therebetween. Means are provided to introduce pressurized fluid to the respective element interfaces to expand the outer element within the elastic limit thereof to an extent sufficient to release the interference fits and enable relative outer-inner element movement. Re-locking of the outer and inner elements occurs automatically upon depressurization of the fluid and attendant return of the outer element to its unexpanded configuration. Actuating means to effect relative outer and inner element movement upon apparatus unlocking are also provided, and include means to pressurize the fluid.Type: GrantFiled: April 20, 1987Date of Patent: November 1, 1988Assignee: York Industries, Inc.Inventors: Joseph E. Patent number: 4774190Abstract: Apparatus and method are provided for the exchange of substances between substance carrier and recovery fluids in predetermined carrier/recovery fluid volumetric ratios, and operate through the vaporization of the carrier fluid in a separation chamber to separate the substance therefrom at a separation zone therein and effect the deposition and accumulation of the substance in a relatively narrow band, and the subsequent recovery of the substance band form the separation chamber by the substance recovery fluid. Correlation of the carrier fluid flow rate into the separation chamber, and the separation chamber temperature, is effective to determine the location of the substance band in the separation chamber. Segmentation of the substance carrier and recovery fluids materially increases the efficiency of the separation and recovery processes. The apparatus and method are particularly adapted for high operational rate operation on an automated basis; and are adapted for operation on a batch basis.Type: GrantFiled: May 15, 1987Date of Patent: September 27, 1988Assignee: Technicon Instruments CorporationInventor: Charles B. Patent number: 4610546Abstract: New and improved, mechanically self-resonant apparatus and method for the non-invasive mixing of materials are disclosed, and comprise vibrator means including container means for the materials to be mixed, and drive means to drivingly vibrate the vibrator means. Sensor means are operatively associated with the vibrator means and the drive means, and are operable to sense the frequency of vibration of the vibrator means and maintain that frequency at or near the resonant frequency of the vibrator means. This promotes thorough mixing of the materials, and minimizes the energy input required for vibrational mixing of the materials. Control means are provided to control the amplitude of vibration of the vibrator means at or near the resonant frequency to avoid damage to the materials attendant mixing. The container means may take the form of a conduit through which the materials to be mixed are flowing attendant vibrational mixing.Type: GrantFiled: December 31, 1984Date of Patent: September 9, 1986Assignee: Technicon Instruments CorporationInventor: Julius Intraub
