Abstract: Blended polyolefin resins containing linear low density polyethylene copolymers (LLDPE) are disclosed for making seamless-wall handled strap bags from thin tubular monolayer film consisting essentially of a homogeneous binary blend of resins. The improved resin blend system employed in this invention contains a predominant amount of highly-branched low density polyethylene structure. A minor amount of LLDPE constitutes the other resinous component, preferably in the amount of 10 to 40 parts by weight per 100 parts of polyolefin resin. The LLDPE resin may comprise a copolymer of ethylene with at least one alpha-olefin having 4 to 12 carbon atoms, and having a density less than 0.94.
Abstract: A biaxially oriented polypropylene film is provided which exhibits improved heat-seal strength and good optical clarity. The polypropylene film is characterized by having on at least one surface thereof a continuous coating of a heat-sealable film layer comprising a copolymer of ethylene and methylacrylate. The lamination may be formed by machine direction orientation of an uncoated polypropylene base web followed by extrusion coating with the copolymer material and subsequent transverse direction orientation of the combined layers.
Abstract: A method for producing non-oriented film that comprises depositing high molecular weight polyolefin powder on a smooth non-adherent substrate, sintering the deposited powder, contacting the sintered powder with rollers at the sintering temperature at a pressure sufficient to effect densification of the polyolefin normal to the surface but insufficient to effect significant longitudinal flow of the polyolefin to form a void-free film, and stripping said film from said substrate.
Abstract: Improved polymeric foams are obtained by the introduction of a beneficial additive to the system by dissolving said additive into a liquid foaming agent which is a solvent therefor, combining the solution with the polymer and extruding the polymer in foamed form.
Abstract: A thermoformed polymeric foam article, such as a cup or container, is disclosed having improved thermal insulation properties. Contact with hot water causes expansion of the foam wall, substantially decreasing foam density and providing greater heat retention.
Abstract: Laminar thermoplastic film constructions comprising a layer of low density polyethylene bonded to a layer of a dissimilar polymer blend comprising high density polyethylene and polyethylene copolymers. In particular such copolymers comprise polyethylene copolymerized with another alpha olefin containing from about 3 up to about 15 carbon atoms. Such copolymers are also characterized by being linear, low density polymers having densities which are below about 0.94 grams/cc.
Abstract: The present invention relates to thermoplastic bag constructions capable of standing in an open and erect position without the extraneous support means normally employed with such bags. The bag is characterized by having a bottom gusset and heat sealed side seams which form the lateral bag edges. The individual walls of the bottom gusset are sealed to the adjacent bag walls utilizing a plurality of spaced apart vertical heat seals which are arranged in a predetermined pattern whereby when the bag is open the bag bottom assumes an elliptical configuration and is self-supporting as a result of the stiffening effect of the vertical heat seals.
Abstract: A novel multilayer film is made by extruding and/or casting at least two layers of resin, such as polyacrylonitrile homopolymer or interpolymers. By co-extruding a continuous multilayer film with contiguous or tandem dies from a first supply of homogeneous resin solution and a second supply of non-homogeneous redissolved resin scrap, a film may be cast onto a smooth cooled drum surface to form substantially continuous adjacent layers from two or more resin supplies. Scrap resin, such as selvage trimmed from stretched film or mill scrap, is comminuted and redissolved in solvent for recycle to the second supply of the extrusion step. The homogeneous layer prevents film disruption by inhomogeneities present in the contiguous layer containing redissolved scrap, which might cause localized stresses in the film and discontinuities during stretching.
Abstract: Polymer foam is extruded as a tube or sheet into a cooling liquid which is maintained at a temperature up to about 85.degree. C. Either one or both surfaces of the polymer are cooled as the extrudate emerging from the die orifice passes through the liquid. Styrenic polymer foam extrudate produced by such a method exhibits excellent puncture resistance and tensile properties.

Abstract: A process is disclosed for preparing a low density polymer shrink wrap which comprises uniaxially cold-orienting and irradiating a film formed from a low density ethylene homopolymer or copolymer, and then forming a wrap by sealing a portion of the film along a seam which runs generally perpendicular to the direction of the orientation.
Abstract: The shear strength cling of thermoplastic food wrap film is improved by coating at least one surface of the film with a composition comprising a major proportion of an alkali metal dialkyl sulfosuccinate and a minor proportion of a high boiling moisturizing liquid.
Abstract: Biaxially-oriented film comprising a layer of solid thermoplastic methyl styrene polymer, said polymer having at least 90 percent repeating units of 4-methyl-styrene.
Abstract: According to the present invention, it has been found that blended polyolefin resins containing linear low density polyethylene copolymers (LLDPE) are advantageous in the manufacturing of thermoplastic films and bags. The blended polyolefin resins are particularly well suited for making seamless-wall handled strap bags from thin tubular film consisting essentially of a homogeneous blend of HDPE, LLDPE, and ordinary branched LDPE. Superior physical properties of blown film from this blend permits the fabrication of economical carrying bags from thinner film, resulting in substantial material savings.
Abstract: Disclosed is a method and apparatus for ensuring uniform distribution of higher and lower viscosity or flow rate resins in a product produced by a coextrusion process. A flow restriction is provided in the flow path of the lower viscosity or flow rate resin to increase the pressure drop of this resin as it passes through a coextrusion die. The increased pressure drop introduced by the flow restriction causes the lower viscosity or flow rate resin to be more uniformly distributed in the extruded product. A specific die construction providing a uniform resin flow channel within the die is also described.
Abstract: Biaxially oriented polypropylene films are extrusion coated with an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer coating to yield a coated film product exhibiting heat-seals which are peelable and which exhibit good heat-seal strengths.
Abstract: An imaging member comprising a hole generation layer and a contiguous hole transport layer, said generation layer comprising a photoconductive material exhibiting the capability of photogeneration of holes and injection of said holes, said hole transport layer comprising a di or triarylmethane compound of the general formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are independently selected from the group consisting of a C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl, aryl, alkaryl and aralkyl, where said aryl is a phenyl group or a condensed ring group, where the alkyl group of said alkaryl and aralkyl is a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 group; R.sub.3 is independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and CH.sub.3 ; and R.sub.4 is the same as R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 or a disubstituted aminophenyl group wherein the substituents are independently selected from the group consisting of a C.sub.1 -C.sub.
Abstract: A thermoplastic bag characterized by having handles formed on opposite ends of the bag mouth which is characterized by having structural features immediately adjacent the mouth of the bag to provide stress relief at those positions on the bag mouth where maximum stress is concentrated when such bags are being filled with product and eventually carried by the user. The stress redistribution feature is characterized by an area or areas, immediately adjacent the mouth portion of the bag and the base of the handle members, which are characterized by having a plurality of narrow pleats which are impressed into the bag structure by die members during formation of the individual bag.
